The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

I made an Excel sheet that Nathan or Elliott could use. You only need two inputs highlighted in yellow. The number of posts received, and the bias. If the bias is set to 5, then the first poster gets 5 times the chances of the last poster, and the bias drops steadily from first to last. After drawing random numbers, the winning post numbers are highlighted in green at right. If people pass on buying, the rest of the ordered list is visible below.

The first post eligible should be #2.

Yes, bias=1, means no bias. I thought Nathan was talking about a bias and getting his less evil brother to implement it.
It's simple without a bias and wouldn't need the spreadsheet.

He was, and did say that. Whether he was serious or not, I don't know. But I know how I feel about any bias being used. It's not intended as an indictment of Nathan's idea, nor your excellent work.

We each have our own points of view. Not claiming any particular merit for mine.

Nathan's bro is really kind of chill in the little bit I've talked to him (I've talked to Nathan a few times and was mentally abused...... I approached his brother with caution.... saying hello carefully planned...... he said hello back very nicely........

He won the mental warfare...... lol

Warfare? Really? C'mon, wasn't it more like a mental tussle with an exhausted submission? Us smooth brainers gotta keep it real.

Hey Nathan,

How do you think your BFK in Magnacut will do in Saltwater environments? I spend a lot of time tuna fishing etc in the summers and almost every knife I have ever brought has gotten destroyed outside a Magnacut knife I got before I was familiar with your work and BladeForums in general. That knife didn't appear to have the edge retention my BFK in Magnacut has (Which has been exceptional).

Being a huge fan of CPK, and the BFK, I want to enter it into that Saltwater rotation, but definitely don't want to ruin it

Let me know your thoughts!
#Not Nathan. But I recently answered this exact question a few days ago in a different thread. My quote is posted below.
I use a CPK FK3 in Magnacut as my scuba/freedive dive knife. I'm in the ocean a minimum of four hours per week with this knife and don't have a single spot of rust anywhere on it. I also use it constantly in the kitchen, where there have been a few times I've left it overnight completely dirty and covered in blood/salt after a steak. No spots or stains or patina to speak of.

There have also been a good handful of occasions where I haven't been able to rinse my knife off with fresh water and clean it till several hours after getting out of the ocean. In the 2nd worst case about six hours. In the worst case I forgot about it and left it in my wet dive bag overnight. I pulled it out close to twenty hours after the dive. Where the knife and the kydex sheath were still covered in drops of salt water everywhere. Still nothing after all that, Magnacut is great.

I had an Elmax knife that quickly developed close to a hundred severe surface rust spots all over the blade in under fifteen minutes of it being in the ocean. I was literally able to witness it happening with my eyes in real time.
Regarding the handles, I use orange TeroTuff. I would suggest this or any other unbuffed micarta really. I think its more important to have a better/grippier material when wet versus the slickness of G10.
G10 would be a "better" material for hard use in the ocean a lot technically. But the low grip factor makes me not use them. Also I've been using these specific orange TeroTuff scales for over 2 years now and they are in excellent condition. Still holding up beyond well, still grippy. The only thing that has changed about them is they have darkened slightly compared to the brand new color.

Other than that, the one biggest suggestion I can make is to. Remove the scales, generously apply Vaseline on the steel scale area itself & on the underside of the scales themselves. Put it all back together and tighten it all down. Then wipe the excess Vaseline that squeezes out off of the spine around the handle. If you do this, it creates a watertight seal so no matter what, salt water cannot get underneath the scales even at depth. This will stop the steel from staying in a constant moist environment underneath the scales and stops the rust that would happen otherwise under there. If you do this suggestion with your BFK in Magnacut, you're honestly golden. I've been down to 140 ft diving with this setup and it still holds strong.

This is awesome info, great to know, looks like I'll be getting a few more Field Knives to take out to the drink!

My sister does a lot of diving and has been looking for a better dive knife. Great to know they hold up that deep (not surprising at all). The Vaseline trick is huge too because basically every knife I have used in the salt has gotten destroyed right around the handle first.

Thanks everyone!

Another trick you can use, is to coat the handle under the scales with a ceramic auto protectant.

Underneath the scales and without exposure to sunlight and wear (washing etc.), the coating is pretty much a permanent barrier. I used to use clear plastic spray, but ceramic auto coatings are even easier.

Which brand did you use?

I’ve used Mothers CMX, and after this video, got some Griot’s 3-in-1 last year (mentioned it before, but I started using ceramic auto coatings on lots more things than just the vehicles. Anything I want water to bead off of, or stuff to not stick, eg. Shower doors/walls, the bin and chute on the snowblower, the blade on the snow shovel etc.)

( I’m not sure if this has already been covered somewhere else in the sub-forum 🤔 ) With the recent LC and SC sales that have been added to the Friday BFK/FK3 sales has Nathan decided to run all the new choppers in “standard" or “tweaked" D3V steel? I was under the impression that tweaked D3V offered some performance benefit for smaller patterns but that standard D3V was better suited for bigger knives?

Standard. I was hoping the change would be an improvement to the steel but instead it was just a slight change to the steel. A very minor change that I doubt anyone would notice without controlled side by side testing.

However, it did increase the hardness sweet spot so I'm using it on smaller knives but I will continue to use standard 3V on larger knives.

Unlike some people's 3V at 62, mine is actually 62.

But the Choppers are standard Delta 3V at 60.5.

The change was significant enough that there was some discussion at Crucible (RIP) whether it should still be called 3V. They floated the idea of calling it 3V mod. But they had already made a modification to 3V that they had already called 3V mod and that's not what this is. So we decided upon 3V Delta. Delta meaning "change".

So now we have Delta 3V and 3V Delta. Which I call tweaked Delta 3V.

Jo is delighted by all of this

I really suck at naming things 😞
