The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Hi Nathan,

About a decade ago now (I think 2016 or 2017), you wrote a piece here on BF about your knife making process. It was a long and very interesting article, and included a bold but accurate statement along the lines of, "My process is probably very different than the way you've seen any knife made before."

That article stuck with me and I've wanted to own a Carothers knife ever since. I finally was able to obtain one in your signature field knives in last sale and the wait was worth it, as it is magnificent!

I would like to re-read that article if it's still around somewhere but, for the life of me, I can't seem to find it anywhere. Can you or anyone else help me find that?

All the best,
CL

I remember reading something like that… Maybe it was this link?

Nathan, I really like the random number generator being integrated in the next upcoming Friday's sale on 4/23, albeit at the expense of the burden on our SuperMod. My Q is, will you please consider limiting the claim time to 1-2 minutes or a certain number of claimants after your OG post after 2 PM so that we can still adhere to the spirit of flash sales and not having to wait for hours to get like 100 entries? Say 30-40 claimants at most for 10 available SCs will offer better odds to make things still exciting. JMO

Yes

Mat, we discussed limiting it to about a minute...but that will be ironed out in advance. The main thing that I was stressing during my conversation with Nathan was that we find a way of making this work for folks who don't have the fastest connections and who certainly are not using any sort of bot to further their chances. (I know zip about bots and am not accusing anyone here of employing them.)

That said, the data shows some of the same folks ending up repeatedly in the top tier...and my goal is to help those slow people...(I'm not sure I like that term ☺️ ), have an equal opportunity of getting their hands on one of the knives of their choosing.

I will not be participating in the sale as a buyer, of course, only to help officiate and provide a level playing field.

It'll be on the 24th not the 23rd. I can only count to 12. Anything beyond that I have to just estimate.

I will look at all the posts entered in the first minute

I'm going to ask my brother if he can write a program so it is biased towards the faster people. Everyone will have a shot, but the folks that post faster will have a better shot.

Unless that ends up being a pain in the ass and then I won't

But yeah. Everybody with a timestamp under 3:01 will be put into the random number generator and then I think Elliott will just go in with his mod powers and edit the winners posts to reflect a win:

Edit by moderator: This post was selected by the random number generator

Something like that.

Nate, I think that we have to accommodate the possibility of people "passing" their opportunity...so, my plan was to have the generator select a series of numbers beyond the cutoff...so that if we have a few empty slots as a result, those reserve folks may get moved up.

I also plan to post a screen shot of the resulting list....from post 2, or whichever is the first post after you finish your opening post(s), up through a number to be determined.

Hey Nathan,

How do you think your BFK in Magnacut will do in Saltwater environments? I spend a lot of time tuna fishing etc in the summers and almost every knife I have ever brought has gotten destroyed outside a Magnacut knife I got before I was familiar with your work and BladeForums in general. That knife didn't appear to have the edge retention my BFK in Magnacut has (Which has been exceptional).

Being a huge fan of CPK, and the BFK, I want to enter it into that Saltwater rotation, but definitely don't want to ruin it

Let me know your thoughts!

I wasn't planning on that, Nathan. (But everything is subject to revision.)

My plan was to publish the list with the numbers. If a qualifying member's post is in the list (up to the cutoff point), he or she would be in. Some members might move up if others ahead of them drop out. This will not require my editing anyone's post. (Which I'd rather not do for multiple reasons, unless necessary.)
