The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

I am all for 15:01 or 15:02 being the cut-off point to give everyone who has taken the time to sit by the computer or parked on the shoulder off some road to be able to partake in the random number generator sale. It would be much better if people enter something like: "in for SC" instead of alphabet salad jargon. In fact even better, just eliminate and revoke entries of the keyboard speed ninjas who enter jargon if not corrected by cut-off time 😇

Now, who'd be evil enough to contemplate on asking his kinder and more benevolent twin (and arguably more dashing in his looks) to write a subroutine program to prefer the faster ninjas? Oh yeah! Him!

The very thought has me contemplating setting Tanto free to unleash havoc...like has never been seen before.

How do you think your BFK in Magnacut will do in Saltwater environments? I spend a lot of time tuna fishing etc in the summers and almost every knife I have ever brought has gotten destroyed outside a Magnacut knife I got before I was familiar with your work and BladeForums in general. That knife didn't appear to have the edge retention my BFK in Magnacut has (Which has been exceptional).

Being a huge fan of CPK, and the BFK, I want to enter it into that Saltwater rotation, but definitely don't want to ruin it

I have a 3V BFK that lives strapped to the outside of my waterfowl pack for the last few years. It's been soaked and splashed by all kinds of water, including salt. I've forgotten to rinse it off after a day and it's never shown a speck of rust.

I'd imagine that Magnacut would perform even better.

What kind of handle material?

Thinking G10 would be the best - this is an awesome insight also, thank you!

I made an Excel sheet that Nathan or Elliott could use. You only need two inputs highlighted in yellow. The number of posts received, and the bias. If the bias is set to 5, then the first poster gets 5 times the chances of the last poster, and the bias drops steadily from first to last. After drawing random numbers, the winning post numbers are highlighted in green at right. If people pass on buying, the rest of the ordered list is visible below.

This engineer says, "Well done".

I will not participate if the system has a built in bias. The whole point was to provide an equal opportunity to each of the respondents.

But, I am impressed.
Yeah. I thought the whole point of the lottery/random selection was so all participants who posted within the timeframe have an equally random chance, vs the fastest posters (bots or not) always having an advantage.

A “sort of random, but faster posters still have the advantage” seems to defeat that purpose.

You get it.

(But, I will certainly defer to Nate and Jo, since it's their house, their rules...and I will not interfere with their running the sale as they see fit. That said, I'll stand firm on my position, with no hard feelings whatsoever.)

Richard's spreadsheet goes either way. ;) 🤣 (Bias =1 is no bias)
