The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Hello denizens

Can anyone tell me what the bearings in my F95T and F3R (both newer mrbs) are made of? Are the balls carbon steel?

I keep a drop of oil in them when I maintain the knives, but I'm quick to rinse the knife in warm water after any food prep.

Read in another thread where a guy found the balls in the bearing of a ZT were corroded.

I've always thought my 95T in Vanax would be 100% corrosion proof. Now I'm wondering about the balls.
TIA

Some of my last pics with the f95NL before it returned to its place of birth. Lunch outdoor

Glad you got the pix working. The wait was worth it. Shiros are always picture-worthy, but that assortment of fungus is absolutely extraordinary. You must live in or near some kind of major mushroom heaven. In my years of hiking/hunting/etc, I’ve seen a lot of fungus but I never saw an assortment like that.

Its never good to have to worry about your balls. (Sorry, couldnt help myself)
My SRBS are all SS. Not sure about MRBS.

TRfromMT TRfromMT , Tom, the Shiro rep over at USN, has written that Shiro BB's are stainless steel. Shiro is not very forthcoming concerning the exact grades of some of their materials for proprietary reasons. It's my understanding that they make their own ball bearings to keep them to exactingly tight tolerances and don't use ceramics as the tolerances of those from outside manufacturers do not meet their criteria. In his post Tom wrote, "While I cannot go into exact details on the materials, our ball bearings are stainless, and are made from the steel that budget (but not budget-budget) knives have their blades currently made of."

Frequent use prevents rust on balls in my experience :p

Thanks buddy, good to hear you liked the pics.
Once you started spotting fungy you'll notice them everywhere.
In all colors shapes and sizes. Magical things.

Welcome to the Den, friend. You're starting off with a really sweet knife and we're looking forward to seeing your pics. Given your membership status, you'll have to use a photo-sharing service like Imgur to post your pics--it's the better way to go anyway--and there are those of us here who will gladly help you get started if you need assistance with the process.

But the Hati is a framelock....

edit:

never mind.... you're talking about the Helloween 111 from R1 *duh*

edit2:

Tracking info shows it's back in Russia, finding its way back to Sergey... *sigh*

I was going to write to Tom and suggest that for all you've done with the SB logos, World Tour Map, your great pics, and commentary along the way that you deserved to keep the NL. I can see why Sergey would want it in his personal museum, but he's probably got a pretty fair number of Shiros already and there was a decent chance the knife would end up in some customs official's pocket anyway. I never did get around to it and then the knife was back in the wind. Of course I wanted it for myself too....
