The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Chazzy-- from all that's described. Since you can't push it in, I'll speculate its maybe a little jagged surface on one, or mostly likely both surfaces, creating minute "interlocking" points that causes the sticking.

Best way to verify (as my eyes need reading glasses these days is one of those cheap digital magnifier from online.. 500-1000x should let you see everything there is.

Ok here comes the wall of text and hope I am making sense here... :)

From the orientation of your pic above.. do you feel the stick more from right at the edge of the lock insert? If it is --what i had done before was to work only on that area. Couple of swipe on sandpaper and then mostly with a strop. Just rolling/ rounding it ever so slightly. It's really really little I must emphasize. But it was on an insert that can be taken out.. Here you mentioned the insert seem to be pressed fit and if it cant be remove and put back easily enough than it would be awkward to do what I did. when I work on that knife I posited that the very edge of the insert will have the max path of resistance of any kind as it is first in last out and moving through the entire full lock on surface with the blade side. By slowly disengaging, if the culprit is really at the edge-- u should feel it and the "click" due lock stick would kick in later.. Else if it seems to be more towards the left of the lock insert surface-- that I will also check the lock surface on the blade more carefully.. Kinda tricky.

One other area I also look at is the right side corner of the lock insert. Inserts and their cut out comes in all shapes. Some are totally exposed on underside and lock face (like the F95) as it is secured by the insert screw.. Here the F3 looks like its pretty much "wrapped" up leaving only the lock face portion exposed. If that corner is sharp ( can't see too clearly from the pic)-- that's where I had problem with lock stick on some knives before.

Kinda late -- just quick snap with my crappy cam phone.
To illustrate.. knife on left below doesn't have an insert (I think the maker puts a carbidized surface or something like that on it) but that right corner was sharp and it was sticky when I first got it from a trade.. its been "rounded" off if you can see from the pic.. It was hard to get at and what i used here was actually one of those rust/ stain eraser from a dollar shop.. and when I felt enough was smoothed off-- rest was just applying the good old pencil trick.. no stick from then on. On the right is the insert on the F95-- its nicely bevelled on both sides so there wasn't a sharp corner (or maybe it has already worn off by the time I got it) and never had sticky issues so far.

Hey anvil_den, sorry I haven't responded sooner. I've been putting in a lot of hours on the youth basketball league I run as we just went through our playoffs last weekend and finished with our finals today. We've got 99 teams of boys or girls and about 1200 kids playing in 9 divisions grades 4-8. 693 regular season and 90 playoff and finals games. Done now, though. Whew!

Anyway, what you wrote makes a lot of sense and I'll give it a shot in the next few days as I plan to pretty much take the next week off to recover. My further examination after I wrote last leads me to believe that what you have posited seems to be the case, likely on both surfaces. I think I can work around the non-removable insert issue if I'm careful, clean that edge up, and polish the lock-ramp on the blade tang as well. I also want to polish up the bearing interfaces on both the Python and my 111 per your earlier post.

I hope to head up to our cabin in Vermont for a long-needed respite in the next couple days. It's just a great place to get away, relax in front of the fire, work on knives, and just chill out. I'll let you know how things go with the tune-ups.

Finally can say I'm an owner! Thanks to Vlad I opened the box to this beauty tonight. 95T in M390. What an absolutely stunning knife, better than I imagined. And the action, oh my, the action is fantastic. This knife has thoroughly ruined every other knife for me right now. My bank account is right behind because now I need more! I'm sold 100%, the Russians make a fine piece of engineering art.

Congrats on the Shiro Stroker!

It's the truth, my knife buying habits have changed since I got my shirogorov.

That cf inlay is very nice Thin-slice, they seem to go the extra mile on the ano work that they do.

The 95T was also my first Shiro. I have thr exact same one. Followed by 3 others. Their flipping action is sooooooo addicting

It is indeed the ano is sorta like a blurple. At a diff light/angle it looks like dark blue and at another angle looks purple. I guess they took note from The blurple spydie line. ;)

Thanks! I haven't put it down yet. Flip flip flip....straight in the pocket. Question for you guys who actually use your shiros, how do you keep them nice? Generally I'm pretty rough on my daily carry blades and I definitely bought this to use it but would like to keep it as nice as possible.

Wash it after u use it to prevent any gunk by cardboard boxes, juices from fruits, dont use it as prybar (lol). Honestly nothing out of the ordinary. Keep it sharp obviously

If u want it as a beater i wouldnt recommend it. Buy a cheapo for that reason or a fixed blade.

No no, not a beater just a user. I should have specified what rough means I guess. Just trying to prep myself to not have anything metal or my keys stuck in my pocket with it and things like that. None of my knives are pry bars, I have the right tools for the right job at work and actually respect that rule lol. Not worried about damage just worried about scratching up the beautiful finish from pocket clutter and the like.

Well generally speaking i never carry anything in my knife pocket. Regardless of what knife i have. No matter what u do though if u have ur folder clipped to ur pocket it will get some snail trails along that area. One thing i have noticed is when its in my right pocket and going in and out of the car as well as tru doors be carefull so that the pocket clip doesnt scratch or bang against rough surfaces.

And it's apart for inspection and cleaning...less than 24 hours after getting it. I'm a mechanical engineer so seeing a knife built to these tolerances and with this much thought is impressive!
