The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

I know there's a lot of beautiful shirogorovs out there - this thread needs more posts! Here's my F3NS that deadnuts matches my polo.

My Shiro stable has been stable for quite awhile, so I've nothing new to add, but I did carry my F95R a few days back and posted it to the EDC thread here and over at USN.

Got myself something new to go along with my F3 CD - Chazzy posts so many pictures of his I was curious how I'd like it. Still not quite sure, but definitely an interesting piece - the design/quality are fantastic, but I definitely see/understand some of the complaints around the detent. It definitely requires a much more assertive flick than the rest of my shiros to deploy consistently/reliably - and it's more prone to a slight mistake meaning only partial deployment. Not necessarily a deal breaker, as I'm sure the muscle memory will come the more time I spend with it. Somehow I figured it'd be huge (I know the RFT is, maybe I was thinking of that?) and was surprised when it ended up being my preferred size/blade length.

Definitely looking forward to spending some time with it, and hopefully I can snag an F3 NS CD(And maybe a Russian Lochsa if they're there!) at CCKS this year.

They really are a great knife! It took me a while to get mine to deploy every time. Now that I learned how it flies out great!

Congrats on the new RDD CF, Pompous Pompous --nice pickup! Your relation of others' and your own reaction to the flipping action had me get mine out this morning for some fondling and flipping as I pondered my thoughts about that. I have posted some on that subject with others here in the past. My take is that while the RDD doesn't open with same casual assuredness of my two F95's, F3, 111, or NeOn UL, among my others, it still comes out dependably with a somewhat different technique.

I've always disliked flippers that depend on overly strong detents in order to effect that "out like a rocket" flipping action (think, many ZT's, for example), and I'm attracted to those that rely on optimal engineering design proportions for a sure deployment. I've also felt that one measure of that is how easily one can depress the flipper tab and have the blade come out assuredly, and those aforementioned knives of mine certainly fulfill that standard. That's not the case with the RDD, perhaps due to the flipper tab being so far rearward of the pivot as mikomonday mikomonday has previously asserted. However the technique I've adopted with that knife for uniformly successful flips is to light-switch without pre-loading but a making sure to fully and smoothly follow through. It doesn't have to be hard or overly aggressive--I just put my middle finger on the tip of the clip and pull back easily from there. Again, follow through is the key. The only other thing I've found is that the action of the RDD runs best with a light oil (W10 NanoOil for me), not gunked up with grease.

Anyway, I got my RDD out to fiddle with along with the 100NS it shares a double sided pouch with, ending up with the Tabargan in my pocket for the first part of the day. I tend to think of the latter as a big knife and the former as smaller and more delicate, when in actuality the RDD all but matches the 100NS in blade length (a full 95mm+ like my F Series knives) while being so much lighter in hand and pocket. It's a lotta knife in a tight, beautiful package.

BTW, Mr.sig239 Mr.sig239 , after our discussions some time ago about getting your RDD disassembled, I'm glad you've got your opening issue figured out.

I noticed that the RDD didn’t flip open as aggressively-if that’s the right word-but more importantly, it opened smoothly and consistently once I used to it. I’ve only had three knives that had a titanium frame lock on one side and either carbon fiber or G10 on the other as with both Lionsteel TREs that I had. The RDD has much better action than the TRE which required a rather forceful wrist flick to flip open but I wondered if there might be a connection between the action of a knife and the two handle scales having significantly different weights. I’ve had knives on which both scales are carbon fiber-the Sigma and the Pero-and the action was incredible on both.

I cant speak from personal experience (I've never owned one) but I do not see the same feedback on detent when talking about the Hati - which is also CF/Ti - so I don't believe that's the root cause. I think it's just a number of small design features that came together to form the end result. My Shiro detent experience in general has been a mixed bag between basically perfection, some too hard, and the RDD being on the softer side - I think it's just down to geometry/design choices.

Overall, I am enjoying carrying my RDD, and am relieved I did not any issues with the lockbar pressure problem I had with my Kami - so no complaints here! Definitely getting more comfortable with the action/position on deploying the more I mess with it.

ChazzyP ChazzyP , lovely writeup as always and the pictures are great. Definitely waiting on some paracord to come in to tie myself up a lanyard on my RDD - imitation is the highest form of flattery!

Hey chazzy I got a 95t headed my way. Thanks for all your advice problem is I bought the new gen 2 quantum today. I gotta hide from wife. Here is pic I also want a frag lol. I don't think I can post pics my membership ran out
