The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

The big knife that doesn't feel big. I am really liking the new blade profile and 3.5mm stock.

If they ever made a F95 Kickstop... man. I'd be all over that thing in a heartbeat! I'm sure I could carry a 110KS but just bigger than I'd like/prefer - but such a gorgeous piece and the Kickstop is an awesome mechanism/addition to an already wonderful design.

Very cool pair you have there, Phil!

Thank You!

I don't really notice the difference when I carry this, the 111 or the 95's. Pretty much all feel the same to me in the pocket.

The Custom Stellar... bolster/pivot collar thing is such a cool touch. Really loved that initial Stellar that had the Dark Ti/ZircuTi bolster but was otherwise plain jane. That, and the most recent batch that had DarkTi hardware are my favorite builds. Really curious to see some of the upcoming Stellaris builds as well - having handled the Stellaris they are truly special knives. Getting the chance to handle some customs at CCKS really turned up my desire to own one of these sooner rather than later.

New to site. Just received a Neon with elmax blade. May I ask what angle are these generally sharpened when needed?
Thanks

When you carry this much stuff around in your pocket every day (except the pistol)an extra 1/2in. of blade means nothing. LOL!

Welcome to Shiro's Rufus! Not sure on the angle. Have only stropped mine so far.

ChazzyP ChazzyP will have the answer or a link in no time, I'm sure! I believe its around 22 degrees. A little low IMO but their grinds are so thin that it doesn't really effect performance.

I've been so busy working on our house while getting my youth b-ball club and our league up and running again after a year's hiatus that I've been uncharacteristically light in my BF activities lately. Even so, I was surprised to find I'd missed two pages here as my alerts seem not to be working despite this being a watched thread. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, no link on Shiro edge angles to share here, but my experience has been that the factory bevels I've sharpened have mostly been right at 20 DPS. My F95R Vanax37 came to me re-sharpened at 20, though not particularly keen, but was touched up fairly easily at that angle to screaming sharpness.

The exception was my 111 which came new closer to the 22 DPS side which Chuck mentioned. I've always admired the very narrow secondary bevel afforded by the thinness behind the edge of Shiro's primary grinds and how well they cut out of the box despite not having the most refined apexes, but I wasn't that pleased with the 111's performance and took that one back to 17 DPS just to see how it would perform, hold up, and appear. It's done very well, actually, and, with it's characteristic TBE, doesn't appear as broad or broader than most other knives sharpened at 20+ degrees.

And while we're on the subject of 111's, I've always loved Shiro's silk milling on many of their handle slabs and scales. It adds grippiness unobtrusively without discomfort, of course, while just being so refined and subtle. It's hard to get it to show up very well on CF, especially given my limited photographic skills and equipment, but it's still one of my favorite features on a couple of my knives.

Also, as Mr.sig239 Mr.sig239 has mentioned, the bigger Shiro's don't seem to carry much larger than the F95's or equivalents, though I must say I'm with Chuck in not being a fan of the 111's clip. It's really too low and tight to easily clip into pants with thicker pocket seams or those that tend to get pushed down easily when worn by those with more mature physiques such as myself. The deep recess on my 111's scale doesn't help much either. Despite my love of all my Shiro's, I've never been the biggest fan of sculpted clips and also prefer the older style configuration set on a separate riser with external screws like my F3 Python. Internally fastened clips can be a maintenance PIA for external cleaning or should they loosen. My favorite Shiro clip is the spring style on a riser on my old-school Tabargan.

Well, all that oughta make up for absence and missing two pages. :p
