That first ding gives you that "Oh sh*t" moment, but it's also very freeing, making it so much easier to carry and use a new beauty. It happened.

Actually I was referring to just finally getting the Gen 5, but there is in fact a small scuff on the clipThat first ding gives you that "Oh sh*t" moment, but it's also very freeing, making it so much easier to carry and use a new beauty.
For me the difference is how scuffed, scratched or otherwise marred a knife. If I mark it up doing maintenance for example, no matter how minor the mark I’m not happy. But if I damage a knife using it that mark is a badge of honor. Years ago, I had a CKF Peaceduke and sharped it in my Wicked Edge sharpener. This was the first knife I sharpened after sharpening a few old beaters and I had yet to learn to put masking tape along the spine and flats. It had minor scratches but they bothered me to the point that I tried to refinish the knife myself. On the other hand, I used my Rockstead SHU to score some wood I was drilling and broke 1mm off the tip. It didn’t bother me nearly as much as the Peaceduke and I sharpened it out and moved on. As this is the Shiro forum i should mention I’ve never damaged one even after hard use.Actually I was referring to just finally getting the Gen 5, but there is in fact a small scuff on the clip. I agree with you completely
ChazzyP and have echoed that sentiment many times to others. If I can't carry it for fear of damaging it, it has no place in my collection.
I still don't mask my blades when sharpening, only around the ricasso and scales if the angle on the stones may scuff up the frame or to rimind me not to creep up the ricasso. For the difference is how scuffed, scratched or otherwise marred a knife.
