The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Very cool! I'm working on it. Thought I had an F95 but realized it had the single row bearings. Still on the hunt for a big boy with multi.

For what it's worth the SRBS are excellent and there are people out there who prefer them. The action on my SRBS F95 was phenomenal. After owning both SRBS and MRBS, I wouldn't let the bearing configuration be the deciding factor.

Does anyone here own both F95NL and the quantum ursus NL that would be willing to share their thoughts? I'm torn between both models, on one hand, I like drop points more than trailing points but there is a significant gap in price between both. Handles shape differ but both seem ergonomic enough and the other specs they are quite close in hand like weight, handle thickness, knife thickness etc..

The gen 5 95nl?

I have both and planning to sell the quantum ursus.
It’s not built to the same level. The 95 is much more refined.

I had the privilege of a three-week turn on the NL World tour back in 2019 which was a Shiro sponsored, global pass-around following the initial release of that model in 2018. I also purchased a rosewood Quantum Ursus NL a couple years back. The QRNL was not in anyway lacking in build quality as it had great action both flipping and dropping shut, had zero play, and was perfectly centered, but definitely had a sorta budget feel to it as B Bing Gao alluded to above.

On the other hand, the F95NL was basically analogous to my earlier gen F95 Turtle which was the top-line serial production model of its time. Both have SRBS, no underlay washers, and no internal milling, the only real differences being the NL's Elmax blade steel vs the Turtle's M390 and the lack of blade spine jimping on the former.

My Turtle gets a lot of carry and use--no less, if not more than my "more advanced" internally milled, MRBS F95R with underlay washers. I find the former to be a quicker and snappier flipper (like its NL cousin), while the latter is a bit smoother.

I liked the NL a lot and would have bought one after having sent the World Tour knife along to its next destination if I didn't already own two F95's and a Hati. That knife was not in any way lacking in refinement. As you'll note in my sig line below, I sold the QUNL.

...that posted before I was ready. The blue carbon fiber is subtle, without a flashlight or direct sunlight it's hard to see. Nice action, very subtle detent whereas my F3 is a little stronger and newer F3 with blue micarta is a really strong detent.

Night and day difference, the F95 made my hand sweat with pure love while at the same time the Ursus didn’t make it past a few dates before realizing it was too rough around the edges.

Got my Quantum Gen 2 back today. For those that remember, I got it 2nd hand in December and noticed soon after it had some vertical blade play, very light lock up, and lock failure could be induced with light spine taps.

Contacted Tamar at Recon1 who was super communicative and very helpful. Also was in touch with Tom at Shirogorov who told me the right way was to go through Recon1. I handed the knife to Tamar at CCKS in February and it was taken back to Russia for service. They contacted me when they received the knife -- the lockup issue was covered through warranty. They also offered for a fee to do a lot of things like refinish the blade coating, reblast the handle, replace the hardware, all of which I declined -- knife is in fine condition and I'm going to use it anyway.

Got it back today -- after 3.5 months. Only had to pay $19 for priority shipping back to me within the US from Recon1. Overall very happy. The blade play is gone, as is the lock failure. Lockup is still very early but feels very solid.

What do you call the lock on the stellar ? Seems like no lock bar to put pressure on . My only gripe with the quantum gen 2 is it’s easy to put preesure on the lock bar when flipping right handed . The stellar looks like it eliminates this .

Shirogorov refers to it as a “tab lock”. The tab you press to release is at the end of a piece of springy flat stock that’s working similar to what you’d see on a liner lock.
