The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Here's Vlad's pic of a hedgehog from one of his threads. Looking at this gave me a better ken of what this tool was about. Slice is surely correct about the edge-angle guides--they're definitely useful for reading existing angles. I'm guessing that the three round, sized holes can be used to store screw/receiver assemblies when working on a knife. Maybe coiledwire or someone else that has one can chime in on this.

I have seen that long ago figured it was just an angle guide or can be used as a lanyard thingy but its awesome to have a took like that added to an order. Freebies are always a pleasure to receive

That hedgehog has 3 tools to my knowledge; the hardware tools, the bevel angle measurement, and thickness measurement.

The angle measurement is the least useful IMO. They are too big on this tool. I was also told that the smaller hardware slot can fit the neon's frame screw, but I havent verified that.

Tuesday mailcall... been a little caught up at work till now. RFT.

UGH... I WANT THIS KNIFE!!!

Haha... it's beautiful! Can I ask where/how you got a hold of it?

A couple more questions... How is the opening and closing action? How would you rate the "fit and finish"?

Recon1 had a lottery but it is sold out.

Total of 200 pieces made worldwide. same with the Dr. Death CF edition. I think they will do 200 on limited runs

When I talked to them approx a week ago, they had not received any yet, nor do I think they had drawn any names; wouldn't make sense if they don't know how many they are getting. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but, I'm note usually lucky.

the lottery is over per their website since they have reached the number of people for the order they are receiving. Don't know the actual number but its basically done.

I'm sure it will get posted here there are plenty of Russian dealers that sell limited run Shiros here so keep a look out.

Afaik-- 100 in Russia and 100 for Recon I think...for the total of 200 pieces..

But maybe it is not all at once, like in previous time-- a couple of batches or more adds up to the final quantity that should be produced eventually.

Action wise-- lighter on the lock strength but signature of Shiro is in the detent. a higher detent ball, so it hold the blade well in place when closed.
Hefty knife--- a little smaller than the 111 but when held -- lengthwise when holding to cut-- it feels much like the 111 though but with a much reduced width.

Action is fast for such a big knife. Zero break in time on first flip imo but after I flip another 100x or so.. it definitely gotten faster at the same smoothness "feel"
This one will get me off my butt to take a few better pics and add something on my blog.. I'll post here again when its done.

I noticed a number of fumbling during opening in others' videos and thought it was due to the slimmed down flipper tab. The trick really is not to touch the lock as otherwise like many knives-- that gets "locked" in and the blade will not fire.. Having said--I am a lefty and there has never been a right handed knife that is more ergonomically optimal than the RFT for a Southpaw. The RDD is a different story though-- it was as if it was purposely designed to piss off a left hander like me (until I figure out where to hold on the handle when flipping :) )

Sweet new knife, anvil_den. I'd love to see a close-up of the edge at the compound grind transition. I'm not much for tantos, but yours is not so severe and it seems there's even a little belly in the forward grind.

Really nice blade. Are those limited edition or something?
Those are indeed Shirogorov Bears Special Editions. The Bears are a fan group on another Forum (USN?). Scrim has a post just before Knoefz's with pics of his. Scrim also posted about the knife back at #77 and there followed some discussion about that model and whether to use it or relegate to safe queen.

Then you haven't seen this one yet.

This is my personal favorite, and it's a collaboration Sergey Shirogorov did with Brad Southard. Not my pictures, but I thought it deserved to be shared.

I'm not normally a fan of tanto blades for practical purposes, but this piece exemplifies what I love about Shirogorov knives. At first glance the design seems plain and simple; but upon further inspection the numerous details become apparent. I also love how the curvy organic lines contrast with the typical angular looks. A real grail piece here, since even if I could afford one I likely wouldn't be able to find one for sale.

I got these photos from Sergey Shirogorov's Instagram. If he, or anyone, takes issue with them being posted here I'll gladly take them down.

I kept thinking I'd seen your knife somewhere before, anvil_den and then I remembered seeing Max's post from last October back at #58 here at the Bears' Den. Brad Southard/Sergey collab. Do you know the significance of your model's RFT designation?

Nor sure I understand your question Chazzy.
If you meant the acronym RFT?-- that would be Russian Flipping Tanto.

Tanto and compound grind in the past has never been my thing when it comes to knives... My thoughts-- a little long for this one here

That indeed was what I was asking, a_d, though the answer makes me wonder at my inability to suss that out myself.

Thanks for the link to your blog article. Good read and nice pics, as usual.

Here's Vlad's pic of a hedgehog from one of his threads.
It looks like a combination of an edge angle and thickness gauge - a nice touch. By the way Vladimir and Vlad are two totally different and unrelated names: the full name for Vlad is Vladislav, while short for Vladimir is Vova.

I'm still waiting for my hedgehog to show up. I opted for free shipping from the Motherland--registered as opposed to EMS--and was told it would take a couple weeks. I've gotten stuff from Russia that way before and the tracking's a little spotty too. It is on this side of the pond now and I think it may well be here tomorrow.

I'm really looking forward to using the hedgehog's two drivers on my PacMan screws. I can take the penny, nickel, and quarter out of my knife toolbag, though they've served me well. I've admired the Shiro pen tool from a distance, but haven't pulled the trigger on that as you can buy a pretty damn fine knife for the price of one.

Thanks for the info on the names/nicknames. I've referred to Vladimir_k as Vlad as that's how he's signed our correspondence. He's probably bowed to our Western lack of sophistication regarding Russian names. Perhaps y'all in Canada are better informed, though I suspect you may know more than others of our Northern brethren ;)
