The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Ty as far as the axis lock it is tricky indeed if u didnt know the proper method/steps. I didnt either and has same frustration u had. Apparently all u need is remove pivot and then the blade with washers. Do not touch the handle screws or axis lock. I was watching a YT video while reassembling cuz was pulling my hair.

Sure...NOW you tell me there's an easier way!:D

I bet u will never forget that story though. Its little frustration like this that become super funny later on. Especially for others lol

Another  on getting your CF Hati, Thin-Slice. Nice one, man. As much as I like my BB Shiros, I'm really enjoying the feel of the Hati on washers now that I've got mine tuned up--feels like a CRK flipper with sort of that same hydraulic smoothness. I still might take another taste off the washers, though.

I like your funky tool, too. I keep a quarter, nickel, and penny in with my knife tools and use whichever one fits a particular PacMan screw best.

And Scrim's right--reassembling AXIS lock knives is a PIA. I too have found that slipping the blade and washers out the front without disassembly after pulling the pivot is the best method. When reassembling, I slip the D-shaped pivot in first just a little proud of the first liner and drop the first washer on that. Pull back on the AXIS, slip the blade in, and push the pivot up into it. Then you can let go of the AXIS, feed the last washer in, center it with a tooth pick or similar, and push the pivot the rest of the way through. Seb 21s and other bushing pivot knives (like the Hati) make this process super easy.

Ty Chazzy and yes thats one of the main reasons i wanted the Hati- washers and pivot bushing in addition to just being a Shiro

Got a quick question for those who have sharpened any 95's

Most are full flat ground or near there so the edge is close to a zero bevel. I wanna sharpen the Hati on my wicked edge when i get it but do any of you know what degree the factory edge is?

I have sharpened or touched up all my 5 Shiros. I started out at 20 ps on the SharpMaker, and all but my 111 touched-up/re-sharpened very easily, so they would seem to be at or slightly less than 40 inclusive.

The 111 was considerably more obtuse and I wasn't going to get anywhere re-profiling that M390 on the SM, even with the diamond hones. I wanted to try a compound edge on the 111 as mine has the fuller and is not full flat grind, but was concerned about making the edge look too broad as Shiros look so sweet with their narrow bevels. I went ahead anyway, starting at 15 ps with the 220 hones on the EdgePro. I took it up through 400, 1000, and polishing tapes and finished up with a 20 ps micro on the SM and a green-loaded strop. The edge does look broader, but not overly so to my eye, and is scary sharp.

Sweet edge, Scrim. I remember that pic from back at Page 1, and it's nice to see it again.

I've really come to appreciate a Shiro on washers since picking up my user Hati. I've got mine feeling very CRK-like, but will probably take the washers down another .01 mm each to free it up just a taste more. Gotta love the bushing pivot!

Edit: Does your 111 have one?

ChazzyP, Thanks...and I think so but don't remember for sure (pivot bushing). I sharpened this one a while ago and many knives since, so I'm a little foggy on that detail. I'd open her up but everything is working so perfectly, and she's blue loctited...so I hate to open her up just to take a look. I don't want to mess with what is currently, perfect action. I do remember how very thin I thought the washers were on this one when I first opened her up, shortly after I first got her, maybe two years ago, approx. Odd, the things that stick in your mind. If she ever again gets sticky or gritty or in any way imperfect, and I HAVE to open her up for cleaning, I'll let you know if there's a bushing in there or not. Damn, should have taken some pics while I had her open. (PS. Oops, I completely forgot I posted that 111 pic to pg. one of this thread. Sorry for the repetition.)

No worries on the repeat pic, Scrim--it just takes us back to the first days here at the Den. I remember you said you'd been "Bit by the Bear Bug bad". That bug's been after me since and I think the Bear's taken some hefty bites outta my wallet too. Like they say, some days you get the bear and some days the bear gets you.

Congrats, man--very nice! I went back and looked at the pics on the sales thread and I really like the way the standard Hati milling lines cut through the CF. It gives multiple looks to whats very nice CF anyway.

The screws on my Hati were buggered up worse than I though when I got mine. I've worked on 'em quite a bit and they're coming around. I multi-folded a little piece of automotive sandpaper and worked a little bevel into the edges of the slots. I've got the front screw about 75% cleaner and am working on the back one bit-by-bit. I'm going to keep at it and probably end up taking down the faces a taste too.

I'm having a hard time keeping mine out of my pocket lately--just keeps jumping back in there. Enjoy yours, T-S!

Hellzzz yeah. Shame ppl dont use proper tools. Even me when i first got mine used a regular flat screwdriver not knowing that the steel is much harder than the pivot screw. I guess we all need to learn someway. At least mine is just pivot screw.

Btw they do sell the screw alone if ur interested PM me i can tell u where. A nit pricey for sure but still. I think it was about $35-40 for all screws for ur model.

Original shiro ones not a third party

Ty, thats why i need like 3.65 inch and above blade so i can slice an apple with full length of blade plus full handle grip. Smaller blade like 3.4 and below are usefull but not for food prep for me at least. Would have loved to keep the Neon if it was only a bit larger. I actually prefer the blade shape of the Neon vs the regular 95's. Not saying anything about CD or FC as those have a very nice belly and flats on top which is awesome when it comes to sharpening on my WE

For any Hati owners can u tell me if ur hati has milled interior pockets to reduce weight?

^^^I was surprised to find mine does, Slice, and just noticed them other day. I had thought the lock-side of the Hati and F95T were identical, save for the Turtle pattern, but of course there are no interior milled pockets on a "stock" Turtle. Both the main body and lock-bar on that side are less broad on the Hati, leaving a greater space between the two. The Hati has a much wider chamfer around the ti slab than the Turtle as well.

I think mine is an older version cuz no jimping but noticed the interior pockets milled out. Since i got used to around 5 oz weight in my folders the Hati feels like a feather thats why i looked inside. Not only one side is CF but also milled. I haven't wieghed thr Hati but i doubt it weighs more than 3.5oz
