The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Hoping to be joining the Bear's Den as early as in the next month. Although aestethicgally I absolutely love the Turtle pattern of the 95R and it's all Ti handles (Tony, I just luv the one which you got with the Vanax 37 steel) I have now decided that my first venture into the Den will be by acquiring a 111 CF with Vanax 37. If anyone has anything to say to the contrary, speak now or forever hold your peace :)

I thought I might just caution that the 111 is a BIIIIIG folder, but looking through your knife-posting areas and seeing the sorts of XL fixed blades you're into, the 111 is a comparative pipsqueak. For my first Shiro, I had a hard time deciding between a 111 M390 G10 and a Python Micarta F3. I conservatively picked the F3, loved it, and instantly wanted the 111 too. I went back to it but it was gone. It didn't take long for me to grab a 111 M390 CF. That's the usual pattern here--get one and right away start on getting another.

I love my 111 and also really like the Vanax37 steel in my F95R--it takes a wicked keen edge easily. Sounds like a winning combo to me. @TALON52 's specimen above at #908 is one beautiful cutting machine. :D

Thank you and that's all I wanted to know. Like a friend had also told me through email, the venerable 111 is like a folding pocket sword. Me likey that since I like to carry big folders when hiking off the beaten paths in a State where there's literally no chance of a CCW and fixed blades must be open carried.

Casinostocks Casinostocks You will love the Vanax 37. Sharpens like 3v, but corrosion proof.

(Meaning it sharpens like a premium quality carbon steel, and I know your experience with that particular steel)

If you know my proclivities, which I suspect you invariably already do hailing from the other corners of this Site, my 1st venture into the Bear's Den will only be closely followed by my second one. Safety always in numbers ;)

I pulled these up outta my Imgur files and posted them on another thread yesterday. One of these is not a Shiro, but what good's a showcase knife thread without a little extra knife porn?

With thanks to CPP in here, I'm gonna join the Bear's Den a bit sooner than I had originally planned. Scheduled to be receiving the vaunted 111 CF with Vanax 37 which I really wanted in a few days. I may as well fess up and admit to a lie:

I had said that knowing my proclivities, the bear bug will most likely not stop with that model as I'm already thinking about an F95R, just like Tony's with Vanax 37. Well, I wasn't lying about that as that will be on the on deck circle. The lie was that I don't think that I will stop there as I'm thinking that if all goes well, I will ALSO be looking for the lil fella too, in form of a NeOn :P

Must have one of each: Large / Medium / Small or whatever the correct terms are in this neck of the woods!

Nice moves! Cover all the bases.

ChazzyP, how do you like the Scout? I was eyeing that one for awhile, if you got it recently from the site I think you did. I just picked up a small Strisch by Cheburkov and am really impressed.

I like it quite a bit, Arch. I had forgotten I wrote a review on it back in April and just found it again the other day.

I bought the knife from the German firm that's the official international dealer for Cheburkov. They were very communicative, easy to deal with, and the price seemed very good.

Thanks for the info! I'll take a look at your review.

Pictures yet Casinostocks Casinostocks ? Congrats!

For you denizens...

I have a little experience with CRK carbon fiber scaled knives and have g the blade ever so slightly favor the C.F. scale. CRK sort of explains it that it is just what it is.

Any similar experience with C.F. scaled Shiros?

My CRK CF has had about a gazillion opening and closing cycles and has just begun to favor the presentation side a tiny bit. It's still only noticeable if I look for it.

My 111 CF shows no sign of movement, but then it's CF both sides.

My Hati is G10 and came to me favoring the G10 side. It was bought on the Exchange as a user. I traced its provenance through 4 owners and its condition shows it.

Its action was poor when I got it, so in tuning it up I took down only the lockside washer before polishing both. That improved the centering somewhat.

All the new R series knives have the underlay washers inset into the handle slabs to prevent bearing wear in both Ti and various composite materials.

Hello Tony :) The 111 CF is scheduled for delivery today and I'm very eagerly awaiting his (her?) arrival. I will be posting my own photos soon, but CCF, the original owner, had already posted some pretty neat photos himself.

I keep getting my friggin model F95 variants mixed up, as it is one like yours, i.e, the F95T with Vanax which will be on my radar soon(ish) if this 111 CF, my first Shiro ever, opens a place for 'em in my stingy little heart which is currently occupied almost exclusively by Mr. Carothers' aka CPK (not to be mistaken with CRK) fixed blades. Anywho! I just kept mistakenly referring to it as the F95R, although a pretty decent deal here on the Exchange had also presented itself for the latter but the steel was the wrong steel for what I was seeking, i.e the M390 (aren't I completely spoiled?!).

Onto your Q about the CRK Ti / CF combo:

I had bought a supposed "LNIB" one which came to me favoring the CF side. I opened it up and discovered that it was previously opened and the washer was pinched. This was way after the facts and I managed to screw it up even more so badly that it was actually rubbing the scales. So off to Boise, ID it went after the Mothership's treatment, it came back centered, dead on. I honestly did not want to hold onto it so I let it go but the popular consensus, verifies by CRK, was that it would eventually start to lean toward the CF scales, in the most likelihood. Currently, I own no more CRKs and as far as Sebenza models go, I managed to snag a Spyderco Slysz Bowie in that cusp of time when they were just being discontinued at a great "bargain" of a price as relative to today's prices. Although no Sebenza, the Slysz Bowie is a GREAT knife which I do prefer over the Sebbie because I feel that both its steel and HT are superior. However, that is just my my not-so-thoroughly-scientific and mostly observation based opinion.

OK, he has arrived and after handling this monster, I will definitely NOT refer to a Shrirogorov 111 CF pattern as a "she". As a few may know or have discovered, I have a penchant for larger knives and I do like larger folders as I pretty carry a large and stout folder while walking the dog at nights or often off the beaten path on the trials. That said, the size of this 111 when opened is friggin HUGE and although I was "warned" about it, I will not be lying if I told you all that this 111 CF still took me be surprise, gosh! My other large folder is a Spyderco Military and below are some impromptu photos for size / weight comparison. I tried to line 'em up as best I could but as most would know, the Millie has some weird ergos of its own. The pleasant surprise is that despite the 111 CF being a little heavier than the "lighter" CF/Ti version of the Millie. they carry about the same when closed in the pocket. (full Ti Millie will tip the scales at over 6 ounces and the flouted version still a bit heavier than the 111, at about 5.5 ounces).

Last first thoughts: the edge can be improved upon by a little bit by using my Sharpmaker later on (like Tony had mentioned earlier a couple of pages back) but this is not so glaring to make me want to get on with this right away! I am really being picky because the 111 ever so slightly snags on thin phonebook paper when going against the grain. Also the marks on the one side of the blade was just from cutting which I didn't notice till the expanded photos and when noticed it wiped right off.

With many thanks to @CPP that he genuinely sold me what seems to be a NIB or darn close to it (we will exchange pleasantries a bit later on)

Casinostocks Casinostocks , what's your read on sharpening Vanax 37 on the sharpmaker? To me, it feels more like a premium carbon steel than a hard stainless. I don't know how else to describe.

Tony, it will be a few days before I would even attempt to try the edge out on my Sharpmaker! I was actually meant to ask you as to which rods you used to Home your edge with? The standard supplied M / F? Did you strop it too?

I only use the SM, no strop. I used the fine and then extra fine. Mine started out with the slightest catching, jagged cut across the grain with PB paper, and when I was done it was gliding through. I suck at stropping, so just the extra fine rods at 20dps.

So both my shiros have arrived on is a deffinate keeper and the other has already been sold. The HatiOn lite was a super knife but just too small for my meat hooks.

The Hati R is a keeper though, what a smooth knife. I can tell a huge differance between the F96nl and the Hati R. The mrbs takes the smoothness to super smooth. The F95nl has been in my pocket since I got it and is a real work horse.DA50515E-3165-4762-9BA9-7EFE861CB3EF.jpeg25CF97EE-1BDA-428D-BB18-B8572EC4B5DA.jpeg
