The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Casinostocks Casinostocks , as I mentioned a couple pages back in conversation with @TRfromMT , my Vanax37 blade came up to a Sharpmaker 10 very easily on that device. It was kind of an 8.5 when I got it, having been sharpened on a WE by the previous owner but having seen some use after by him as well. I used only the fines and ultra-fines and it came to a very keen edge quite easily. I don't recall stropping.

As a side note, relative to your new pocket sword, my M390 111 was the only one of my Shiros that came with a slightly more less acute than 20 dps edge. I've always liked the appearance of the very narrow edge angle on Shiros, but not wanting to spend a lot of time reprofiling M390 on the SM, even with the diamond hones, I went ahead and put a 15 dps on it with my EdgePro, finishing up with a 20 dps micro bevel on the SM. The edge looks a bit bigger, but not out of place on such a big-ass blade.

When you do get to touching up your new 111, I'd be interested to know how your edge angle matches up with your Sharpmaker.

Congrats on your new knife and thanks for the pics and your thoughts. Welcome to the Bears' Den!

I only use the SM, no strop. I used the fine and then extra fine. Mine started out with the slightest catching, jagged cut across the grain with PB paper, and when I was done it was gliding through. I suck at stropping, so just the extra fine rods at 20dps.

Luckily, I also bought the UF rods in addition to the extra CBN rods (obviously for reprofiling purpose of any knife if ever needed). Additionally, I have the pocket sized Fallkniven stuff whatever the names which I don't seem to remember now. Like you, I'm better at honing than stropping which I also suck at. From your account, our Vanax 37 edges seem about the same out the box. No biggie that can't be bettered :)

I am new to the Bears Den, a friend of mine recommended this as the best place to find out about Shiro's. I have been bitten by the Shiro bug and would appreciate some guidance in where to find info, a reputable place to buy them and telling me which configuration to get one in. I like the F95 Hati and the Icebreaker but I think the Icebreaker is out of my budget. I know that if I get one on the secondary I will have a problem if something goes wrong. Thats basically what I know. I have held them and carried them and really like them. I acquired a partial list of what the letters and numbers mean but I need more info than that. this will be my most expensive knife that I will be spending and I want to make sure I don't make a purchasing error and end up with a clone.
your help will be much appreciated.

Hi Mike,
Welcome to the Bears' Den! The only factory authorized Shirogorov dealer for North America is Recon 1 in California. They are not a registered BF dealer, so just Google them and they'll pop right up. Their prices and selection are good and they will take care of sending your knife back to the Mother Country should it require service.

I've bought all my Shiros, both new and used here on the Exchange and would not hesitate to do so again. The two new ones were shipped from Russia by private resellers there and came at excellent prices. One of those two came from Vladimir_K who is a registered dealer here at BF. Just search him here and you can find his contact info to PM or email him if you wish. Vlad is very reliable and can help you find a knife you may be seeking at a good price. Lots of guys here have bought from him.

I've made out fine buying second (or more) hand here. None of my knives have required any work that I couldn't handle myself. I know a couple guys that have sent their knives back to Russia on their own for service, and while it's a little nerve-wracking, both came back fine. You may prefer to buy new from the authorized dealer if you're more comfortable with that security.

As to the knives, Shiros come in Serial Production, Custom Division, and Full Custom lines. The Hati you mentioned, the F3, the F95, NeOns and HatiOns, and the 111 are serial production knives. The Custom Division knives (and the collaborative knives) are limited production and much more expensive. Sergey's Full Customs are wicked expensive and quite rare. The Icebreaker is a somewhat older full custom, recognizable as such by its signature duck foot screws.

The Hatis, F3s, and F95s in current production have all been "renewed" (read, upgraded) and bear the "R" designation. They all feature Multi-Row bearings (MRBS) with steel washers inlaid into the scales plus internal milling to reduce weight. The new Hatis are available with Alutex scales--like Silver Twill but in a multitude of yummy colors.

All the older serial production knives are still excellent, many featuring Single-Row bearings (SRBS), jimping, and some with internal milling. The older Hatis run on PB washers and are more CRK-like in their action, albeit with flippers, and feature internal milling.

Hope that helps a bit. Remember to post some pics when you get your new Bear. Happy hunting!

Thank you for your quick response. This info is very helpful and I am going to follow up on it. I think I will connect with Victor first and see what he has. The Shiro's look so plain but when you pick one up and hold it it's a whole differentThe Shiro's are much more my style than the CRK's. I had a Large 21 and I really wanted to like it but it just didn't do it for me. The Shiro's on the other hand I can definitely get into.

Thanks again for your help

Hi again, E emjay4248 . Re-reading what I wrote last night, I thought I'd add just a little more info. You already know from the Shiro thread you started that 95 and 111 in model #s refer to blade length in mm. There was also a model 110 back a bit that had an AXIS-type lock like the earlier Tabargan which was 100 mm.

Hati's and F3's are also 95 mm. F3's are liner locks and Hati's are half-Ti with the opposite scale being G10, CF, Silver Twill, and now Alutex in lots of colors. Alutex is like Silver Twill with aluminum impregnated fibers.

Much appreciated kind sir. I sent Victor_K a PM and i'm wating for his response.
Thanks again

Whole page here with no pics, guys. Wassup with that?

Here's a little knife porn featuring my work user Hati which has been in and out of my pocket these last couple days in our Vermont woods and fields.

Nice group, thegreatwhite thegreatwhite --and I thought CPP CPP was over the top with his three. It remains to be seen, now, if your collection will push him further down the rabbit hole. ;)

I've only got the UltraLite, but I can see why yours is your go to EDC. I'm usually into bigger knives, but my UL is the best smaller knife I've ever held. I just love the way it nestles into my beat-up old hand and its open-back construction and smooth interior is super easy to maintain. I just finished opening, cleaning, and re-lubing mine and it's unbelievably smooth and free-dropping now. It does have the smallest damn BBs I ever saw, though. I thought I lost three until I found them hiding inside the female pivot.
