The BFC 2007 Canittler Is Completed!!!

Yeah, actually mines has all of the above as well. Like I said I was just kind of curious, if some of the flaws were indicative of CS as a whole and it sort of sounds like it. I certainly can't see any reason why the grinds would be non-symmetrical on purpose.

On the up side, walk and talk are fantastic, especially the spear point is extra tight, but I like that for the chipping type of whittling I usually use that blade for, so not at all a complaint. Overall it's a real nice little knife. I usually like a little less wide main blade, but the shape is growing on me already. And it came razor sharp out of the box.

And of course just to have it said, the little quibbles certainly don't detract from the awesome job that Eric did with the whole thing, and wouldn't stop me from being involved with the next one in the least.

So have we started the voting for the model of the next one yet? :D

If we have to complain and believe me I had to look really hard but my only complaint was that out of the box sharpness on a scale of 1-10 was about a 7.

F&F were superb, walk and talk, outstandin' even the quality of the scales were excellent.

If I had to rate this knife over all I'd give it a 9, once I put my own edge on it, it'll be a 10.;)

My only other wish is that the # was #13 instead of #15 to go with my other forum knife. :(

....
Little surprised to see that the grinds are significantly off, clean, but not centered at all, anywhere (I take that back, the coping blade is relatively centered). I never expect perfection from a knife in this price range, but Cases etc usually have better symetry.

....

I've looked these grinds over and I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the small blades are ground off center for a reason. On my knife the mark side of the small blades barely have a plunge line while the pile side has a deep plunge(almost a chisel grind). In effect, for a right handed person, this makes a better angle for whittling. It's so far off center that it had to be done on purpose.

Mine has the main and the pen blade just a tad above the liners as well. I too will probably file the kick down a wee bit on down the road.

While at the range I got to use the coping blade to carefully cut the tiny bit of tape holding the neck cord on a young lady's ear plugs. Always nice to help out a pleasant looking gal. Shame on her husband for not having a knife.

That's pretty much what I was thinking Kerry.

After carrying my Canittler for a week (since I got it), the scales are getting worse. When I got it it had some "crazing" in the ivory, and a few faults where there was no "surface finish" for lack of a better word; Dark spongy bits showing through the ivory surface.

Well, now several of the "crazes" have shown themselves to be cracks, and one in right near one of the pins. I just had to push a piece of the ivory back into place. :( I guess I'm going to have to send it back to be rehandled.

Well shoot, I'm sorry to hear that Sam. Is the spongy material coming from between the liners and scales, or do you mean dark inclusions in the material itself? It's a varied material sometimes, although mine is simple white, may as well be cow bone really. But you may have gotten one with more inclusions in it. If thats the case you can try filling in the area with come CA glue(superglue basically) to make it more solid, get real thin stuff and build it up in the dark areas, it'll dry clear and smooth. Of course thats a moot point if the material is moving on you.

Sorry to hear that, as I said, mine is off on the grinds a bit, but as a user, is pretty solid.

Sam,
If you're sticking pieces of ivory back in place:eek:, I'd say it warrants a re-handle. I wouldn't hesitate to send it in, they're super accomodating and the turnaround, according to Ford, is super quick:thumbup:. Let us know how you make out, and if there's anything I can do to help, feel free to e-mail me.

Eric

Sam, I'd send it in. Like Eric said, they did a good adjustment and very quick turnaround on mine. Even though I could have filed the kick on mine myself, I felt better sending it back to them under the circumstances.

Thanks for the comments, and I'll keep you posted. Not sure about pics; I'll see if I can swing it this afternoon.

I'm not worried about sending it back, and indeed, have already contacted CSC about it. "No problem," they say, as well as, "we're very sorry this happened", etc.

I've had a couple of issues lately with goods being shipped that shouldn't have been. It happens. Part of the mettle of a company is how well they make good on situations like this. I have every confidence that CSC will treat me right.

But I felt so bad about it on Friday I had to buy myself another knife to get over it. Sniff, sniff, poor me... ;) (The Case Mini Trapper w/Wharncliff I've been wanting for a while, fwiw...)

Just got back my #022 from CSC. As you may recall, I had to send it back (shipping and insurance costs at my expense) to repair the scratched bolsters, and heavily cracked ivory. The ivory was cracked and splintered surrounding the shield and reverse side.

Wally Gardiner, one of the owners of CSC said he would take care of it, and he did.

Below are pictures before and after. The before pictures are only of the reverse side, as that was the side I was documenting the scratched bolsters.

Looks great Beaver, I like the color. Glad they took care of you:thumbup:

Got mine back last night.

They replaced my cracked scales, and it looks fine. The new ones don't have the lines and "crazing" of the old ones, but that's fine with me: All that "character" turned into cracks and broken bits of ivory.

I have neither before nor after pictures, but take my word for it: I'm happy. :D
