I wonder if it is possible to polish the bolsters without removing the serial number? It looks like the numbers are quite a bit deeper than the striations on the bolster finish.

It ought to be wholly possible with a little bit of care! GEC's satin bolsters appear to be to be in the 220-400 grit range, so 600 up to 2000 grit and then a buff ought to do the trick. 600 isn't aggressive enough to worry about.
