The Case Barlow is BACK

Thank you very much for your reply Mike . I was not jesting . I have seen too much outsourcing by Large Companies in my working life to think that it was not possible to happen . I know that it is just part of business but I am not a big fan if it . I just can not understand why Case would have changed their Pin Positions and the Made In U.S.A. was not visible in the pictures . I was happy to see your answer and I am anxiously waiting for you to get mine in as reserved .
Thank you again my friend .

Harry

The dark blue one does have Case USA right on the bolster in the picture.

Case discontinued the last version of the 62009 1/2 in 1985 - up until then the Barlows had three pins (two through pins and one scale pin). When the Barlow was reintroduced in 1999/2000 it had an additional scale pin. So it has had the four pins pictured in the Case advertisements for the last twenty years. I would guess, just like several other patterns from the 1960's and 1970's that are still in production, the Barlow's received new or updated tooling in 1999 and that is what Case is using today. No nefarious moves by Case. OH
Ps I'll take some pictures in a minute or two for comparison purposes.
Pps. Way back in the tested era the Case Barlow had four pins (but placed differently than today) - however, today's pin placement may be the most historically authentic for four pin counters!

Quicky, bad quality picture of a 65-69. Case blew it on the nail nick on this one - not my style! Three pins - made in USA. OH
Ps got a break in the rain, went outside for a (hopefully) better picture.

To us it seems a no-brainer:

Release a Case Barlow with "CASE XX" on the bolsters, Clip main, Pen secondary, and Sawcut Red Bone. Desirable pattern with classic features - Win/Win.

Case doesn't work that way. I have no clue what their strategy is other than "Lets make a buttload of Trappers/Peanuts/Tiny Toothpicks in a zillion different scale materials!". I get the feeling there are some people there who understand the knife-nuts though based on the Bose/Case collaborations and the recent fixed blade collaborations.

I think Case makes working knives and collector knives. If you're a peanut collector, you have to buy every different scaled peanut to complete your collection. Apparently there are a LOT of Case collectors outside of this forum, since the run of 250 pilot barlows sold out in about 2 days.

Glad I'm just a whatever-knife-I-like collector!

The last one I bought, 2007, from a W.R. Case set. I like the bone (jigged Chestnut) but where did that bolster stamp come from? Four pins again. OH

They just run that thru their scrolling machine; no stamp there. It complicates the process when bolsters are stamped because that happens before assembly and care has to be taken when buffing. I expect simplification is why most moved away from it. Etching or scrolling can happen after assembly.

Well, I will read up on it some more and try again! Thanks John!

The following directions were sent to me by @flatblackcapo several months ago. It is how I usually post:

"I don't use my phone for much more than a phone and taking pics so posting from a pc is easier for me. This is my method, using the Firefox browser.
Find the pic wanted on Flickr in the photostream, click on that
it takes you to the page with just that pic. In the lower right hand corner there is a arrow with a line under it, click that and choose " View all sizes"
Choose the size you want to post and right click on the pic, select "view image info"
A window will pop up and the text needed should already be highlighted.
right click that highlighted line and copy.
Go back to the forum and click on the little mountain in the square next to the smiley face.
Paste the text into the pop up window and click insert.
You should see your pic in your post now. If you don't see it, something went wrong.
I hope I explained it so it is understandable. Writing is not my forte.
hit me up if you have any questions."

I also sometimes post from my phone by hitting the "upload a file" bar, but often the picture is too big. The way I make it smaller is to e-mail it to myself in "medium" size, then save that and upload it.

Good luck!

I'll give it a shot. I am not extremely literate at computers, but your instructions look straight forward, and I'll try again when I get some time. I tried tinypic on the last one and it didn't do it. Thank you for your help, and have a great New Year.

1999 (the last re-introduction), four pins, that devil of a Duke Blue color in Pocketworn bone, blades just like the oldies, shield. OH

Thanks for that picture OH :thumbsup: I am not sure that I ever saw the pin locations like that before and if I had , then I forgot it . Old Age didn't just creep in on me . It sometimes seems as though it has come in with all the lights on and flashing I guess . What year is your Barlow ???

Harry, that one is tang stamped (and box package dated) from 1999. Steve Pfeiffer says it was re-introduced in 2000 in his book, Case could have made them in 1999 and officially introduced them in 2000 (sort of end of year/first of year as they are doing now). I got on a Pocketworn Blue Bone/Block Shield kick around 2004 and started buying them from hardware store displays as I found them, so I cannot speak to the actual date of arrival. OH
