The Club and Improvised weapons thread (Post your Handy work!)

Here's a little improvised cane walking stick with a push dagger in a Hurst T-Shift handle, makes a good improvised weapon.

Okay time for another improvised weapon.

This is the wooden plank from Silent Hill 2.

Or at least it's as close as I can get from the pictures I've seen.

The dimensions are entirely estimated based on pictures I've seen of James holding it, and how much of his hand fits around it. But it's still pretty heavy, and I'm not sure it's cut out for one handed use.

I've got a 3' stick with probably a 10-12" burl on it.... Been waiting to give it the attention it deserves. When I get around to it it'll definitely be going on here!

Still haven't finished this yet a little more sanding and it's ready for a finish.

Trying to get into the improvised weapons game, last year I had a few blowdowns in the woods so I took the opportunity and salvaged some wood, got a fairly straight piece of elm and a nice curved piece of maple, hoping to turn them into clubs of the sort. The maple will end up being a root-ball styled club, and I'm undecided on the elm. Any tips?

I did a handle for a cosplay sword (blade made of wood, handle of Iron can't remember the graduation), still, working on it, I welded a screw to the top, so I could make exchangeable blades or accesories, an I'm working on a medieval mace, and the Axe head (gonna make a tomahawk...)

Yeah but good luck finding a proper hardwood handle for such applications.

18" worth of an old shovel handle might work, if you reduced the diameter up top to accept the bottom of the tee. Maybe ream the tee out and reduce the haft far enough down to where the haft extends up into the tee a bit, and epoxy in place.

Either that or try a length of aluminum tubing threaded to accept the tee. A lighter weight haft would make that design sing.

Here is my interpretation of a Maori Patu that I made of oak. I was going to carve a pattern into it, but I couldn't bring myself to do it right now.

Does an improvized zap stick count? It makes a hell of a noise, and the electric arc is enough to discourage most people. Otherwise it's mostly harmless, just hurts like hell. Still, I managed to light a cigarette off it once, so it does pack a bit of a punch. Powered by a 6v lantern battery or 4 AA batteries.

Love that Patu, I've seen some made out of jade. Even the wood seems like it'd pack a big ole punch. That zap stick seems like something I'd back off from.

Those zap sticks are ridiculously easy to make, just need a spark gap igniter (google it, costs about $10-15), a switch, some batteries (5-6v usually works, the higher the current, the bigger the arc will be (up to half an inch, need to check the specs on the spark gap igniter)), and two "electrodes" (could be nails, strips of sheet metal, anything conductive really). I was toying with the idea of mounting it on a glove, but it's a bit too bulky for that. Next step will be probably a zap club or staff, just need to find an appropriately sized piece of wood.

Alright, I'll ask the dumb question. Exactly what the hell is a zap stick, and what's it used for?

It's kind of like a tazer, except it doesn't hurt as bad as one and has no stopping power. When you push the trigger switch, it makes an electric arc between the electrodes (half inch long at most) and a very loud electric crackling sound. If you stick your finger in the arc, it hurts like a mofo and can leave a burn mark, but it won't do any serious damage. It's quite harmless compared to an actual tazer, the electric arc and crackling sound is enough to deter most people.

[edit] And I've made it to see if I can. So far it's been used for entertainment purposes only, and occasionally to light cigarettes. [/edit]
