The Composition of Infi and What it Means

I’m not sure how stating that Infi could be anything or everything helps whatever argument you are going for here.
You came out with this public announcement after calling A8 mod (which has apparently an extremely loose meaning) and infi and I quote "the same" :

1. They are not identical, but same "family" I guess
2. The 10 year old composition you based this on wasn't mentioned in your title, which is misleading people to think this pertains to their current knives which it may not. You yourself already said you don't know if this is current or not.

Larrin took time out of his day to answer your string of questions you've hounded him with twice and answered them succinctly and you give him a "cool story bro". You've contributed very little to the conversation yourself.
So, nope? You're just here to defend larrin against little ol' me? How sweet.

I’ve now written thousands of words about the composition to answer your every question. You said you were just asking questions, but when given every answer available you then incorrectly summarize my statements in an attempt to prove some argument that is still unclear to me. This doesn’t have to be an argument.

Incorrectly summarize? What was incorrect?

So I re-read this thread with fresh and awake eyes and I understand the ideas presented. Now what does it mean that INFI might be A8mod so far as I can tell it means nothing. I like that people are interested but the true name of a thing changes nothing about said thing. If I found out Shinyedges real name was polishededges would he now be taller or smarter or somehow less? Besides heat treat is nearly everything in blade steel ,if you don't agree use annealed 3V and see how it holds up to 420j2 at 55rc .

What part of this post is wrong?

As a user of the steel in question for years, I would love to test A8 mod head to head against infi.

With all due respect, you need to stop replying to yourself and step back and think about what we are trying to tell you.

You are not being logical and contradicting your own statements. According to you you cannot possibly know INFI well. According to you INFI is a marketing name and can change at any point in time and no one outside of busse combat knows what it is, therefore you don’t know which version of the steel you have, so your experience of years of using it is pretty useless. You see how if we take this as our premise it makes absolutely no sense to discuss INFI at all? You keep on saying that you want to try A8 mod against INFI, well no one is stopping you, order a knife from a custom maker in this steel and compare. We have to agree that INFI is a steel with properties of steels in general, because if it has magical properties such as self sharpening and such then we can’t intelegently discuss INFI. Before you ask, l haven’t tried A8 mod, I tried many knives in INFI original and newer and while they are OK knives they are not for me, not because of the steel but they are just too thick and ultimately don’t cut too well due to the overbuild design. To me a knife is first and foremost a cutting tool, so I don’t expect it to cut cars, concrete, etc. not a criticism just not my thing.

Again, we are not discussing knives in this thread, just steels and as far as that goes, as far as we know INFI is A8 mod.

I agree. In the past it has been very important to some people that Infi not be compared to any other steel as it must be wholly unique for some reason.

Fair enough. I'm not sure why I took such a strong stance in this anyway, I don't have anymore infi left. You make valid points.

Mr. Busse has said all along that he has been tweaking INFI through the years along with the hardening, tempering and cryo.
I for one enjoy the give and take of characteristics that INFI provides in a large blade .

I've read a bunch of these "INFI" threads in the past 10 years. The result is always pretty much the same no matter how you dress it up.

Maybe A8Mod,.. who knows ? It's a trade secret.

Busse is in business to make money, not teach knifemakers in China how to duplicate his knives.

Ask Mike Stewart the details of his heat treat sometime and see what he says.

Gentlefolks...some of your fellow members have reported personal attacks in this thread.

Please keep comments to the subject under discussion and avoid discussing one another so that we can avoid the unpleasantness of closing the thread or issuing infractions.

Thanks for your help.

Such minute differences in the composition of an alloy can occur just in different batches alone. I could order 6al 4v titanium from several sources and have it come out 5.8al 4.1v, 6.12al 3.91v, ad infinitum, and it would still be called 6al 4v. Even testing a different spot on the same piece of bar stock could probably result in such minute variances, depending on how well-made the alloy was. The makers of the alloy are attempting to get it as close and even as possible within tolerances for its intended types of use.

6al 4v (called Grade 5), is exactly the same as 6al 4v ELI (called Grade 23), except that the ELI variant has had as much oxygen removed as possible, and we're talking just about a fraction of a percent here. It just has a different ASTM grade number because it's very clean pure so it can be approved for certain industries where it's required to be that free of oxygen. It's still all 6al 4v.

If I made a bunch of machetes with a super good secret heat treatment out of it and called it Mechatanium XXXtreme Mod, and somebody zapped it with an alloy gun and it came up 5.9al 4.09v, then it would accurately be called 6al4v. The place I bought it from would have labeled it 6al 4v, and sold it as such. I could have it custom made, and it would STILL be 6al 4v.

That's because you understand spec ranges for a specific material. That, as long as it's in that range it's within spec, it's stamped Approved by the maker. Makes perfect sense, but apparently, not everyone understands specification ranges.

So it's A8 mod with an unknown but fairly well like heat treatment that no one knows. And few people have experience with A8 mod in a knife blade outside of INFI.

So INFI very well could be nothing more than A8 mod and we won't know until someone does a test.

What we do know is that published information says it's just A8 mod which is obtainable by anyone who wants it.

So get some and play with it instead of being offended that anyone can do what Busse does, which is take a good steel and apply a good heat treatment and geometry tailored for the use for which the knife was intended.

If anyone cares to look cliff stamp was advovating for a8 mod/chipper for years. I believe he has posted some good info if anyone cares to research it
