The edc one knife challenge thread

I'm starting to seriously dislike loose pocket carrying my Companion. While the knife lends itself to this very well (it's small, light, slim and unobtrusive), I'd really much rather have it on my belt. I very much prefer just taking the blade out from there instead of holding the sheath with one hand or pushing on it with my thumb and possibly having the edge grind against the sheath. Kydex (unlike glass-impregnated polymer sheaths a la Ka-Bar and Cold Steel) isn't known for ruining edges, but still. More than anything else, however, I'm terrified of losing it despite that no part of it comes close to slipping out of my pocket. I'll have a very hard time getting another 1st gen Companion should I lose it, and while I want one of the new ones, they're significantly more expensive, and I'm a college student who's got bills to pay.

I'm not going to neck carry it, and belt carry would probably get me in trouble at work and on campus. I won't put a pocket clip on the sheath for the same reason. I'm waiting for that wallet chain I bought to arrive; I'd still be a little annoyed at the draw but I'd feel much better knowing I wouldn't lose my knife should it accidentally slip out of my pocket.

The knife itself is still going strong and cutting everything I need it to cut. No signs of real dulling yet; the honing I put on the edge is gone and I'm still working with what is essentially the factory edge. S35VN is beginning to impress me...as do these delicious bran muffins.

EDIT: I decided to whip out the honing rod and carefully do some work on the edge, because I don't carry knives that aren't at least hair shaving sharp. She's now once again sharp enough to take on the world and show it what "sharp" means! I'm especially happy that I was able to do this without actually sharpening the Companion; no metal removed and I get to keep my word about not sharpening her until at least the end of the challenge. S35VN isn't so bad. I'm really starting to like it. It reminds me quite a bit of AUS8A, my favorite steel, at least the way Cold Steel has it done.

I still think the edge is just a little too thick, but I'm not messing with it until after the challenge.

Going to respectfully and gracefully bow out.

A week in and all I've proven to myself is that I really don't like smaller knives, it wasn't just all in my head... I can carry them, at times, but no way I'm limiting myself to this thing exclusively for 3 more weeks. Maybe I could've gotten away with it had I stuck with the Quickfire, due to the larger handle, but the Kershaw cqc2 is not going to work. Maybe I'll hang onto it and give it to my son when he's a bit older, but still with small hands? Maybe it'll find itself in a GAW in the near future... I highly doubt I'll be carrying it again though, for now back into it's box, and to the bottom of the knife box it goes.

I'm also not a personal fan of the wave... I like the concept, respect the function, it works fine and I "get it", but I personally don't need or like it for me.

That's too bad, but I understand how you feel. I'm learning that the Companion is about as small as I like to go for a primary carry knife. I also don't carry my waved folders too often; they're cool, but the ones I like are mostly too large for EDC (4.5" blade or longer) or just don't do it for me as much as my other blades.

Try attaching a leather strip via Chicago screw and IWB carry?

Also, the one match fire part is suspended until I can get free time between both jobs, haha

That's a good idea. I hadn't considered IWB carry. Never done that before. Can it be comfortable?

Man, I hear that about the jobs. In between classes as I type this. Gonna go home later, sleep, and right back to work. Gotta do what you gotta do. I want a Screech Owl one day. ;)

Shoot me an email at Rileyxvx@gmail.com and I'll send you some stuff on how to make one. I actually like IWB more since I work around machines all day and it could get caught on stuff as I clean them.

Two jobs, plus SAR training, and I do a little side bass guitar in a band so free time is something almost unheard of, haha.

Yeah man, that's what this challenge was all about right? Pushing our comfort zones... I definitely did that, what I did learn though, is that a 2.75" blade (for me) is doable as long as the handle is 4" to fit my hand. I just know already this tiny little handle+blade will leave me wanting, and there's no way I will put myself through it for 3 more weeks, so bow put now, why drag out the agony?

Found a hole at the bottom of my jeans' pant leg, and decided to cut it off so it wouldn't snag on anything. Denim is not an easy material to cut, but the Companion did it.

Well hey, you learned something, and that's what's important.

I'm actually surprised how well I'm doing without a benchmade 710 or sebenza in my pocket. The TAD dauntless has served me well, and now that I knocked the sharp edge off the lock bar and stone washed it, I'm liking it even more.

still carrying the turmoil OTF every day....still really like it overall. Im not a big fan of the slight play in the blade, but thats normal for an OTF....im just used to sturdy built folders with zero play.

The only real downside to carrying an OTF is the reactions it gets from non-knife people. i have to be careful if I need to use it in public. Anytime I deploy the blade i get a comment or two...

I really like how it rides in the pocket, and just melts away. Its very light:-)

Just foolin around today. Carved this for the kids. Only had to strop the Barky once before I finished. I'm really impressed with this CPM20CV steel.

Well, gentlemen, I regret to inform you that i must withdraw. Wednesday, i was able to grab a long anticipated blade, and i cant bear to not carry it. On a positive note, i did gain a new appreciation for the GEC, and will continue to work it into the rotation. Good luck to all, and ill still follow the thread. Now, without further ado, the knife that derailed me.

I'm out also. The little Dragonfly is a great knife, but it's not a knife that can do everything I need a knife to do everyday.

I'll likely continue to carry it as a secondary blade; it has really endeared itself to me in a lot of ways. I might pick up the one with g10 scales and plain edge (not a fan of this FRN).

For food prep and some finer cutting jobs, I need a larger blade and no serrations. The 0560 is back in my pocket already, and I've no regrets.

Cheers, and thanks for pushing me to try something new. Wish you guys luck in the rest of this challenge.

That's pretty awesome, Spyder! Nice!

I sliced up some carrots. This geometry is great for general purpose, but FFG would have done a little better at this. I wonder if I'll be able to pick up the new FFG CPM-20CV version? Would be a much better slicer with better edge retention not just because of the steel, but because of the grind.

Anyway, I'm glad I decided to change the scales, because I found some rust on the tang. Some water must have gotten in there while I was washing the knife.

I was able to get most of it off, but there's still a tiny black spot. Nothing I can do about that right now.

still opening boxes and such. Cut the kids' muffins this morning. I am growing to where if I had nothing but a balisong, I could get by, still going back to the microtech when we're done though.

Update from the last few days. Highly exciting stuff like food and such. But such is the life of an EDC.
Edit: nice shot of the patina forming in the last pic.

My little POS is still holding up and not holding me back as much as before. Its got its share of patina and the soft handle is getting beat up which kinda makes it cool to me. Im still thinking this is gonna prove that I really wanna EDC my new Cryo rather than a fixed blade but again, the POS is in my pocket as we speak and not bothering me one bit.

CHALLENGE: Cadet

Hi Everyone, I missed my weekly report last week so I will try to do two this week.

The Cadet in the kitchen.

I have tried to use the Cadet when ever I could over the last two weeks, especially in the kitchen. Here are a few of my findings so far. First, the knife is much to small for most of the things I do when I am cooking and prepping food. Second, I can see how the bail, or key ring if you want to call it that, can get in the way. Third, I find it the nail nick an irritation because things like peanut butter get stuck in there.

It has been pouring down rain here in Northern California wine country and nothing is better that a soup or stew when it rains, right? So, one of the meals that that the Cadet prepped for cooking was a vegetable beef soup. I decided upon vegetable beef soup because I could use the Cadet in some way with every ingredient in the meal.

Like I said above, The knife is a little small and it really became noticeable with this meal. The carrots were very easy to slice because of the thin blade but peeling them took forever. The celery was a snap. Some of the potatoes were larger in diameter than the Cadet's blade length so that was a little difficult. Cutting up the steak went well but took longer than I expected. The onions, oh, we cant forget the onions! The onions were a huge pain! They were much larger than the Cadet so I had to handle them more to get them cut up. Needless to say, I had to stop numerous times to wipe my eyes. I used a canned beef broth so that I could test the Cadet's can opener. Not really impressed with it. I find my P38 opener much better and faster than the Cadet.

Much to my surprise, the Cadet was able to slice the French bread quite well, especially for such a small knife. I have found the Cadet to be a pretty good slicer. Within reason, of course.

I am finding that most things are taking me a little longer with the Cadet than with my EDC. All of the food prep takes longer for sure. Maybe because the Cadet has a blade shorter than I am used to.

My knife made my dreams. Had a dream last night that I was walking through a park and a nefarious looking character was trailing behind. I deployed my benchmade and carried close to my side as a precaution. Can't report if there was any action, though, as I awoke before it got to that point.

This constitutes extra points

Love your nick-name for the knife. [emoji41]
