The Flea Market Mung Absolution Thread

Sure has been a lot of pointless chatter lately in the Flea Market, particularly from people who should know better. The new guys are slightly excusable but remember: it's a sales thread, not a chatroom.

+1

Yeah, we all know it was a nice score or an awesome piece or great snag or excellent sharking or beautiful knife, that's why they bought it.

"Of all the wonderful things that man has the choice to stroke, another mans ego should never be one of them." Either Confucius 479bc or Frank Zappa 1973, I can't remember...:D

I'm pretty sure it was Zappa, but only because Confucius began everything with "Confucius say...", right? 😉

(More) seriously, though: Duder FTW.

I'm kind of bummed. I avoided mingling up the sales thread once and got no recognition. My post in here from like two weeks ago. No one commented. Never again! I say mung on! Just kidding. Don't Mung on. Mung off.

Lol. I affirm your presence and efforts toward mung-free living.

Hey Joe, that Monarch was something else. It also got me reading about the emerald ash borer. I didn't realize we were in such trouble. Epidemic invasions by several beetles are burning through North American trees like wildfire.

Looking for your thoughts ... When you sell a knife in the Flea Market do you clear out your thread or leave it up but marked as "Sold"? I like to reference older sales and pricing periodically so I leave my post as is but I edit it to say "Sold". I also leave the final sale price but again clearly marked sold. I know some people clear their thread.

I haven't sold many here in the FM or exchange but frequently sell on other sites.

Like you - I prefer to preserve the price and simply mark the knife sold and lock the thread.

I wish more folks kept the price available as it helps calibrate the the market for a particular model and maker.

I sure prefer when everything remains intact. Were I to be trying to track down a specific knife, that gives me another point of history to go by. If I'm looking for a particular model, it lets me see how frequently that model has popped up for sale.

If you have to edit anything clear the price, but please leave the listing.

Frankly I hate it when people pull down their sales threads. The Flea Market is also a used-value resource and a secondary photo thread so leave your sales pics up please!!!

I delete the price for one reason. I don't want anybody using my sales history against me or against anyone else selling the same model. Just because I take a bath on a sale doesn't mean that that's the going rate for that particular setup. Buyers will take past final sales prices into consideration when contemplating a purchase and that could drive prices up or down, and I'm not trying to do either.

I definitely see your point of view. I like the prices left in the post for exactly the reason you stated, but you make a very valid point

Joe,

That's exactly why I don't get bent out of shape about the edit from a price to SPF. That said, there's no way of knowing whether a knife actually sold for the stated amount. Based on my observations in the Exchange, I suspect a significant percentage are sold to buyers making reasonable offers that are lower than the posted price. And, while if don't actually think it happens, a person could theoretically inflate the market by RAISING the price after it was sold. It's a simple edit, same as marking SPF would be. Again, I don't think it happens, but I take what I see on sale threads with a grain of salt.

Supply and demand, which we frequently see at work in the flea market, means that the knife that sold two months ago in two minutes for $50 over FF prices, may not be able to be sold this month for $50 under FF prices. FF knives seem to have an amazing ability to retain their value, but the market is the market.

That's why I like the listings to remain up, even if the price is marked to SPF or SOLD.

Forgive the rambling...it's been a rough night and morning with the wee one.
