THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

Not sure what the CRKs went for in the 80s, but here were the prices at the end of production (around 2009-2010).

9" baldes - $415

7.5" blades - $350

5.5" blades - $255

4" blades - $205

Have you guys seen the Robson Knives? Tim Buck, who runs the shop, used to work for Chris Reeve and had the idea after CRK stopped production on the one piece line. Written up in the January issue of Knife World.

They look incredibly well made and I like the overall design, but I'm not sure about not having a threaded buttcap. I understand the handle is oval, therefore, threads wouldn't work, but if the lanyard is around your wrist and the knife is dropped, would the buttcap (plug) seperate from the handle?

The changed the oirginal design and have all been threaded for some time, for exactly the reason you cite. They're pretty heavy too, which is what I saw as the biggest drawback when I handled them, but of course some will see that as a strength based on personal preference. It's an offshot of a family business in Idaho and I am hoping they succeed.

Not saying I don't believe you, but for the life of me, I can't find a reference that the buttcaps are threaded. Is there a link that talks about the threads? Thanks!

I talked with Tim Buck at some length at the Kelso, WA show. He said: "We originally had a pop off cap and switched to a threaded cap because of feedback from users." I saw both varieties at their table and they stopped making the pop off version, so ones left can either become "collector" versions and I'd assume sold at discount.

Received the Apparo today, really solid knife..nice and hefty. I'll post a full in depth analysis at a later time once I get my custom sheath.

Great idea! I saw martin had them for sale for $45..but was thinking of just doing the same thing. Worst case scenario I screw up and fork of the $45 for the new cap..Where did you find the compass? I saw some for sale on ebay..

I had a couple laying around that I don't remember where I got. Just little 14mm ones, pretty close to a half inch, I had to wallow out the hole a little bit to get it to fit. Not having a 14mm drill bit laying around. Oh and had to explain why there was aluminum dust in the kitchen. lol

haha..nice, thanks for the info.

So Schrade has what looks like their version of Chris Reeves knife. http://www.taylorbrandsllc.com/shop/schrade/fixed-blades/schf1/schf1-p-200.html I would like the bit set better if there was an optional end cap without the tools. I guess I could order a spare and cut the bit holder off. I remember seeing Chris Reeves knives at the gunshows back in the late 80's but can't remember what they went for. Anyone remember?

My understanding from reviews I've seen is that you can remove the entire bit holder by pulling it out. I'd remove it if I had it as we'll.

I would like to know if a round end cap from Chris Reeve would screw in to the Schrade knife in place of the hex one.

Does anybody happen to know what size and type cord is used on most hollow handles? i want to change the color on a couple.

Man oh man,

I got my Martin Handmade MCE II today, Ohhhhhhh Yeahhhhhhh!! That knife is a real beauty. Blade is dualtone finish S35VN SS. Guard is also a S35VN lugged guard. Handle is 303 stainless steel and the endcap is made with T6-6061 aluminum. NewtMartin is Amazing to deal with. Excellent customer service. My birthday was Jan 14. I had ordered the knife back in October. Newt gave me a 3 to 4 month wait time. I still had about a month to wait yet. But just a week before my Birthday I kind of dropped the ball him.

My wife thought it might be good idea if I got the knife to open on my birthday. Newt said my knife was close to finishing and he would try to get it done in time. In my opinion, Newt worked his butt off just to try and finish it in time, and he made it too!! We had my birthday celebration this evening as planned. The knife arrived today at about 12:30 PM. Of course, getting this knife also brought on having to get 6 stitches in my thumb. But that is another story for another time!!

Many people have told me that Newt Martin is one of the best knife makers there is. Now, after my experience with him and the beautiful knife he made for me, I can surely vouch for that to be true. He definitely is one of the Best!!!

Very cool you need to post pics big time. I'm waiting on my martin mce2 as well. The wait was killing me so I first got the boker apparo, then last night I found a surv9 on ebay and bought it too. If you need more of the handle wrap Hank Martin said its band twine you can get it at walmart in the arts and crafts area.

Lol well the boker is a pretty inexpensive knife and the Martin surv9 I was surprised that I got it for what I bid I expected to get outbid but didn't so Yeah happy dance and it shipped today too. I'll be posting pics the day it gets here I'm going to make a new sheath for it the one it comes with is kind of boring. As for ordering the Mce2 well you get 3 or 4 months to pay for it. Really not that hard to do. My biggest concern is that as soon as it gets here my oldest daughter will confiscate it. She's bad about that with new knives and guns. Of course she does carry and use the knives she has in the field so thats kind of ok. Kid's had her own gun and knife safe since she was 12.
