THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

Here is a 2nd pic of my Toooooo Sweeeeeet Handmade Martin MCE II knife. My friend who makes sheaths and knows all about knives said he has never seen such a well made knife as this one!! But anyway, here it is...another look

Thats a beauty!

Just found this Cattle Baron Survival Bowie on a popular auction site. I remember these being advertised in Blade Magazine in the 80s. I've never seen one come up for sale.

It even has the old Marbles compass in the buttcap.

The martin looks great, hows the edge?

Man, the edge on both the Schiller and the Martin is to die for!!! But esp that Martin. My first knfe ever with S35VN steel blade, and I am in love with it!! A cinch to sharpen, takes forever to dull!! Just fantastic!!!

I finished this one up recently, and it is a little different from the regular models I do, so I wanted to put up a few pics. I waited a little bit, as the owner is a member of the forum, and I wanted to let him be the first to post pics, if he wanted. This one is 5160, with an 8 1/2" blade very nearly 2" wide, and the full MOA System. It also has a thin layer of micarta under the cord wrap.

I hope you like it.

Very nice work, Sam, but I see a problem. No one is going to want to use the knife and mess up the beautiful satin finish. :p :D

How thick is the blade and guard on this one? Oh and great job on the soldering!

Looks great, Sam!

Thanks, bowie.

Lol, thanks Tom. Lets hope not :D. I make my blades primarily from .225" thick stock. This winds up being a little less than 1/4" thick when its finished if you put it against a ruler. For those that dont know, finished size is always a little thinner than what you start with. Generally the next size up in steel is about .260/.270" give or take a little, and I just dont see the need for that kind of thickness. Closer to 3/16" gives better slicing and cutting performance, and is a little lighter.

Same thing with the guard. I use 3/16" thick 440C for the guards. Big knives are heavy, so I try to shave weight wherever I can without sacrificing performance. The Model 1 I did chinups on was thinned down almost to 3/16" for its whole length.

Waiting on this to clear customs I'll take better pics when it gets here. I'm going to change the wrap and bead blast it, and make a new sheath for it.

I think HH knives are cool!

I only have two, and they aren't as fancy as the ones you guys have but I like them.

Cold steel bushman!

And I also have the mini, but no picture of it.

I keep the big one as a spear, but a ferro Rodin the handle when its in knife mode! The mini has a .410 shotgun shell capsule filled with matches in its handle. :D

I keep a fero rod, some ibuprofen, a couple of bandaids, little packet of antibiotic cream and some water purifier tabs in the handle. I usually keep a altoids tin kit on the sheath with a bunch more stuff I've found useful over the years.

Well customs finally got off there rumps and I got my Martin knife in the mail today. A few observations on it. It has just about the most perfect grinds I've ever seen, its a complex shape and to be that well done takes serious skill. It came razor sharp and in a very nice sheath. I rewrapped the handle in tan micro paracord and took it out in the woods to do a little chopping. Not a lot its freaking cold and raining.

It chops like a dream and cuts beautifully. Once it warms up I'll get out more and get in the shop to make a new sheath or two and bead blast it.

Stitched up a new sheath, it came out ok i'm out of practice. I'll probably make another version when it warms up some more.

Oh yea, that looks terrible. You're gonna have to start all over. :D

Pretty much exactly how I feel about it. The next one will be better though. Small mistakes that might not bother someone else just annoy the heck out of me on something I make. lol

I understand. Curious, what are the small mistakes? Honestly, it's a great looking sheath.

Also, why are you bead blasting the finish?

I over stitched at the top and had to cut the stitches so the belt loop would work as designed, since it wouldn't fit back into my sewing machine no matter how much cussing and yelling I did, I added 2 copper rivets to hold the mouth of the sheath together. Also the loop for the sharpener is not exactly square at the bottom, the piece of leather I used stretched at the end when I sewed it. I'm not happy with the spine side either its not as straight as it should be. It fits the knife well and hangs perfect on a belt just the height I like so I'll just refine it tomorrow and make another one.

As for bead blasting the blade I simply like the finish better on a user than satin.
