THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

006_1.jpg

I have one of those Rambo knives, but it's a "25th Anniversary Limited Edition" ones.
Am I correct in assuming it's utter junk and should just be on a display stand or plaque as a movie prop?

I'd probably never take it in the woods either way, but would be interested to know.
By the way, it has a little compass in the cap just like your picture (probably junk too?)

If made by United Cutlery, Master Cutlery etc, then probably best used as a display piece. I think those 25th anniversary ones were a Master Cutlery product. IMO the best of those licenced versions was the older United Cutlery version, albeit not correct to the movie knife (12 teeth Vs 14, etc etc).

PS, there are MUCH better knives to take purposely into the woods, but this design will surely work if needed too I guess. Probably not the UC & MC replica versions as mentioned, but I do know of those who have used the high end tributes with great success.

I assumed as much, so nothing lost here.
My "woods" knives include a Bucklite, Schrade Bear Paw, Ka-Bar USMC (1984 production), various SAKs, and a few others.

This year I'll add a Buck 119, Buck Vanguard, and a Becker (still deliberating on the model - thinking a 10) to the collection.
With snow every day since Easter, I'm hoping I'll actually get out into the woods before August...

Here is my brand new Randall #18 style hollow handle knife...

I have been wanting a handmade Randall #18 style knife for a long time...

Neat knife, but for a more accurate Randall #18 copy, check out Greg Wall. Here's a quick internet photo...

Lol, yeah, mine isn't from United Cutlery, etc.

If it looks like a troll....

Nice Andy Wood tributes. Mine has the Pyser-SGI. Works a treat. And yes, your right about Andy, he is extremely accomodating. Its a pity his contract with Lile Knives LLC was short lived as I believe Andy's version to be absolutely spot on in regards to the first 6 knives. I will have to get some photos of my knives one day.

With regards to Ray Matton, I did read somewhere that he was in ill health. Maybe thats the reason for the miscommunications etc? Life gets in the way sometimes. I had one f Rays's tributes a few years back. It was a very well made tribute knife, but not completley accurate: still, excellent workmanship.

Yes, Ray Matton is in ill health at the moment. I have the very last First Blood Tribute Knife that Ray will probably make. I hope not though.

And while its not entirely accurate to the movie one, that does not bother me at all. I like that the knife is similar but has Ray's personal different touches to it.

To me, it is kind of freaky that someone wants to emulate an exact, detail-by-detail, knife of a knifemaker that has passed on, unless they just want to see how exact they can be for their own skills. But not to make money on. That is just kindof creepy. But that is just Me. Not trying to bash on Anyone or get hate drama going. Just speaking my personal feelings is all.

But still, Andy Wood's skill Has to be very complimented on!! I was going to get mine from him before ordering from Ray but Ray had done me a very big favor before. And I wanted to return that favor back to him.

I like Ray Matton. I hope and pray that he gets better and gets back to making knives! Time will tell though.

I really wasnt Wanting an Exact copy of the Randall #18. I have held a Randall #18 before and for me, it is a bit small. I love bigger, heftier knives. I did also contact Greg Wall and had been considering getting a Randall stule knife from him.

And all was fine...blade type, longer blade...All of it. But I believe he said he used t6061 aluminum for his hollow handles and I actually wanted the handle to be stainless steel or steel. When I saw the specs of the BCK knife, I Wanted It!!! LOL! And I got it and couldn't be happier.

Its 5/16" thick D2 steel with D2 steel hollowed handle. Built like a freaking tank!! Ive not bought a knife this solid since I got Andrew Clifford's Black Blade Sly II style knife that is built hefty too! That ACK knife is so strong that Ive nicknamed it Samson.1...Samson for its strength and the "1" stands for it being the first one Andy made like it!!

Hey MJ,

I didn't know that United Cutlery was using vintage Waltham compasses! Those UC guys are the best. :D

I don't think he meant it that way at all. When he said his had a compass and it was probably junk he was speaking of his knife not yours.

BINGO

I wouldn't think a junk knife would have a highly collectible/valuable micro compass in it.

I got a little confused too, glad to see I'm not the only one lol. Beautiful Wood knives, guys. I really like the non-movie blast pattern, makes it look more aggressive to me. Very cool.

From the bay, here's one you don't see often. I remember these from the 80s. Made by Tony Louis Jr....out of Kentucky, IIRC. I believe he trained under Gil Hibben. Not sure how the teeth would perform, but they sure are wicked looking.

Good one, Tom. You don't see those too often. And I agree, that is a real aggressive design. I don't know if they saw real well either, but they sure look tough!

That paracord is not the original handle wrap. In the 80s, Tony wrapped his handles with thin nylon line or thin wire. Here's one that I believe has the original wrap.

Imagine the re-wrap after use!

True 80's there....

Here are a couple of quick photos of my AWood FB knife.

Gundy, that's another great looking FB knife by Andy! Fantastic photos as well. I see you went with the movie style bead blast. The NATO compass is a nice touch.
