THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

Very nice. On my WOOD #9 I have a NATO cap and a Waltham cap. My non-numbered knife just has a Waltham compass. The Waltham seems to settle much faster.

Cheers TAH.

MJ, I am looking for a Waltham cap now for one of my AWoods. Do you know where they are readily available if at all?

I found these about ten years ago on gunbroker. I ordered four of them and had them in my desk forever. I didn't think to send one to Andy until after my #9 was built which is why that one also has a Pyser/NATO cap. When I ordered my second knife I sent two compasses to Andy. I sent one to Matton as I mentioned and it was never returned and the other one is around here somewhere but I haven't been able to put my hands on it as of late. Andy did take several detailed measurements and said he was planning to someday make a Waltham replica. Sorry I couldn't help beyond that.

Thanks for the info MJ.

You're welcome.

It's funny, I was originally disappointed as I was looking for the compasses from #7-13 but these were as close as I could get. Back then nobody had any idea that #1-6 used the domed Waltham compasses. At least I didn't.

In reading the recent posts in this thread and seeing some great pics of these knives, these questions come to mind (without regard to the myriad of details regarding angles , etc. that have been put forth):
Is that secondary bevel not a bevel at all, but just a polished/non etched area of blade? This is what is seems to be on my replica (which actually looks pretty close to some of the Lile knives, if in appearance only).
Could Gaston have been trying to replicate what looks like a bevel, but is actually not?

Just one of those random thoughts...

the secondary appearing bevel on my Martin knives is just a brushed area not a actual bevel. The Lile I had years ago was all bead blasted. As for what Gaston was trying to do, well i don't know.

I am on shift now and not home for some time; so nil access to the Wood knife, but without confirming, its a full flat grind and merely an area that is polished, previously masked prior to bead blast. Mr. Woods attention to accuracy and fit and finish is absolutely second to none.

I am yet to own a FB Neeley, but know of Vauhgns work well having had a lot of his other knives and his workmanship is the same.

I cringe every time I see this photo....imagine putting a $90k knife in its sheath the wrong way!

Andy's attention to detail is simply amazing. I think I am more impressed with the sheath - thread size, stitch count, stone pouch thickness and placement, leg tie down tab...everything is perfect. Fantastic!

Some beautiful and superb HH knives shown since I last visited this thread or was able to visit the forum, mainly because the lack of access and time, but back at home now and ready to enjoy once more the great blades posted here.

Must say that the amount of variations, designs, steel finishes and sizes are simply amazing and take the original concept of the big survival knife into several other venues in the HH universe!...I am still glued to the monitor looking at all these beautiful and superb creations, GREAT work guys....and GREAT thread.

'Might want to edit the middle sentence out of the thread before you get jumped on by the mods (no selling or giving advanced notice you might want to sell)...

Thanks for the advice, greatly appreciated! I as a guest member do not want to break any of the community rules.

The "original" hollow handle knives! So, here's a question. If Case reintroduced these knives today, would they sell? I'd buy the one in the first photo in a heartbeat.
