THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

Some gentlemen that have been field testing and reviewing my S.A.F.E. System knife did a field use video on it and in my opinion did a very nice job. I will post it here for others to view if they wish.

Thank you for the feedback and for taking the time to do all that work fellas.

Good looking knife.

'Must prepare for zombies' 😁😃😃😆

Now I want an atlatl.

Oh Sam, we all know that it's just a matter of time until the blade falls off. That video was totally faked. :p :D

The subject of round handles is an interesting one. The handle of the HH knife I make is not round.............. I'm curious to know if there are other HH knives out there that do not have round handles.

Check out the ROBSON RPW Knives X46

They make several different versions. Amongst them a Tanto point (yuck).

This one is quite nice:

I also quite like this one - the Hunter. Can be had with or without the micarta inlays.

On this one, the butt cap is a press fit, as it is on the one in the top pic.

Those look quite nice, and indestructible. Not a first choice for choppers though. Thanks for posting them.

Some of those one piece designs with handles that aren't round are rather interesting. :)

My nominee for the weirdest use of a hollow knife handle was in a futuristic movie (Planet Earth, 1974) starring John Saxon. While Saxon was asleep, an amazon flipped open her hollow knife handle, took out a vial of some drug, and fed it to Saxon.

Thank you. Tom aka TAH, the poster below you, was very helpful in refining the design on the S.A.F.E. Knife.

Lol, I'm sure his video will get flamed on YouTube with comments to that effect sooner or later. Funny thing is, when I talk with knifemakers, people that pay their bills by actually making knives, very few of them usually have any doubts about a handmade HH knife being made well. Most I have spoken with think of them just like a hidden tang knife, which they are.

It's usually the YouTube posters and people that post more about knives on forums than use them, these are the folks that think they're junk or will shatter into pieces at the mere mention of hard work. What are you gonna do though?:)

Sam

I reckon one inch of solid tang securely fastened to a tough handle material is enough. BUT the handle must be really strong, to avoid "levering".

Strangely, I remember this movie, but not the knife.

Actually, there couldn't be a more believable tester. If there is anyway to break something, leave it to a kid. :D

No offense to the people that worked on the video but I think the reason HH knives get such a ripping sometimes, is the lengths some people go to justify them. They lost me at the "tube gauze applicator". They had to wrap the gauze around the handle in order to use it to put it on the finger with more hassle. Why not just wrap it around the finger to begin with. Seems like quite a reach.

In the spirit of "any exposure is good exposure" all in all it was a good video. I could tell the testers worked hard on it, and they did a pretty good job.

I personally think it would have been better without the long, flaming introduction and the banjo playing, but maybe that's just me.

Thank you Mark, good points. I think they did a great job, also. I don't believe they were trying to say that is the best or only way to apply tube gauze. The point with finding uses for a HH knife is that if you already have a knife with a HH, why not utilize it for every aspect you reasonably can.

Plus, the idea seemed sound to me. I have had tube gauze applied before by just rolling it on, and that can be painful (it was onto a burn). Sliding it off the handle onto a finger will reduce that pain somewhat. But you can apply it a number of ways. This certainly wasn't a First Aid instructional video.

As far as the fire and the intro and even the humor in the video, it's clear they were having fun with it. I don't know how many videos you've made about knives, but they can get pretty boring very easily if you don't have some fun with it. But feel free to post any videos you have made as well. Good content keeps a thread alive, I know you have posted pics, video would be nice too if you have done it.

Some excellent points. I would have liked it more if he hooked the knife to his dad's Kubota then used it to lift the back end of his mom's SUV with a fire background.

Seriously though, he should have explained the how and why of the tube gauze application for folks who don't understand the way this particular dressing is applied.

I actually liked some of the humor. We have had some videos done but not about our HH knife, ours were about our store and custom knives. Given what most peoples attention span is, we tend to keep ours more short and to the point. For the HH knives we depend on the blog to show what tests have been done.

Anyway, the video did a pretty good job of showing your knife and you seem happy with it so that's all that matters. It's a lot better than some dude skinning a snake with it to use the skin as a canteen to drink his own urine out of.

Thank you, and I agree, they did a fantastic job. All of those skill were demonstrated by a very young man, and in my opinion he nailed it. If you look up how to apply tubular gauze, I think you will find it is often applied in a very similar manner. Regardless, better than a Bear Grylls commando parkour video. I have covered him in another video anyway.

Thank you again Dysphoric Joy and son. I wish I had all those skills before I was even a teenager like your boy.

No, I didn't need to be convinced on how strong Sam's (or HH knives in general) handle to blade joinery is, as some people do. But really, that gauze didn't just slide off of there like it was a smooth plastic tube. Defend it if you must, as for me, if you ever run into me with a smooshed or burned finger, please stay away from me with that thing, I'll take care of it myself.:)

No matter what we do, there's still going to be someone that's not going to go for it. In this case it's me, and that's OK we can still be friends. Some people are really going to dig what you guys did, and I wish you the best in all your endeavors.

Those are good points, and I don't want to argue. I will add, respectfully, I think you are coming off a little thin-skinned here.

You took a poke at a video done by an 11 year old boy (over some minor, but pretty technically accurate points) and when his dad took a poke back at you you're acting like it's bad medical advice. I have no beef with you and I don't want to argue, I just don't know why youre hung up on this. Seems like a small thing to take issue with, especially since you make hollow handle knives yourself, even though I do understand yours couldn't be used in that capacity as they lack a round handle. Again, no need to pick each other apart here, we're on the same team.

Thank you for the constructive criticism though, I do appreciate it and will try to better my knives from it.

Perhaps your taking me the wrong way. I used a smiley face because my comments were meant to be light hearted. I assumed the video was put up here for discussion. If I was wrong, I am sorry.

I did not take a poke at anybody, I was just saying what I liked, and did not care for in the video. The same we do with everything else that is posted up here. It's clear that both you and the father did not care for my remark and so the discussion went on.

Everything I say here is only one mans opinion and no one need get any heartache about it. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that not everybody digs everything I do either.

People will see advantages and disadvantages in everything I do, everything you do and in everything that the father and son team does. If producing those videos is something that they want to do then I would share with them and you something that I learned a long time ago. Your never going to please everybody.

I said what I said in the friendliest way possible and I meant it in the friendliest way possible. That's why I said this

"No matter what we do, there's still going to be someone that's not going to go for it. In this case it's me, and that's OK we can still be friends. Some people are really going to dig what you guys did, and I wish you the best in all your endeavors."

This also has nothing to do with your knives or mine or a comparison of round verses not-round handles.

If I have offended you or them, I am sorry, I did not mean to.
