THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

actually they changed knives from the original rambo used at the start of the movie, you can see the rescue3 hollow handle blade when he's in the minefield probing for mines. Thats the only spot it got on film before they went with the non saw back solid handle knife.

You can vaguely see it in this still

So just had to add a fishing kit, I've had lots of guys scoff at a small fishing kit, but I've caught a lot of catfish and bass on a stick pole with just a bobber and hook and a worm or grasshopper.

Nifty little bobber is a chem light as well.

Thanks Nitro. I just cannot believe all this is coming true for me. I keep pinching myself to see if I am just in a very longlasting dream, LOL!! I mean getting a high end Martin MCE II knife and an Immaculate Ray Matton handmade First Blood knife too!! I just cannot believe God's blessings on my life!! Only a year ago, owning a Martin or Matton Edge knife was just a longtime dream I Never Ever thought would come true!! Ive seen used Martin MCE II knives sell on Ebay for even higher than what they were bought for. I seen one sell for $850. I saw.a used one that was even in bad cosmetic shape, and even that one sold for $650. And they Sold too!!

That told me a lot about Martin Knives quality. But I thought they costed into the thousands of dollars, what with those selling Ebay prices. I had no idea that they costed around $550 and up, depending on the type of steel chose.

I tell you though, that darn Newt Martin is one top notch guy!! He upgraded my MCE II to the full desired package and didnt charge me a cent past the base model price. He did this as a surprise birthday gift, and man it sure was a Surprise!! S35VN steel instead of 440C, lugged guard instead of the bade round guard...skull crusher endcap instead of the base model flat endcap. All these upgrades I very much wanted. But I had to also watch my price range. Newt knew I wanted them and also knew it was my birthday present from my wife, the knife was. Lil did I know, tho, that he had a birthday gift for me himself...it was every upgraded I wanted..all for Zilch aka for free. Just a fantastic knife maker!!

Then you have that superb, awesome Canadian knife maker Ray Matton!! That man makes a First.Blood knife in every superb way you.could think of!! Superb balance, dynamic attention to detail, and just one all-out badass razor sharp blade. Made with D2 steel and tempered at 60 Hrc. Thats a perfect heat tempering for D2 steel, by the way. D2 can be tempered up to 64 hrc, but that makes it too hard and brittle. 60 Hrc is perfect for D2. Its a nice balance between hardness and softness which gives the blade excellent give-and-take features, meaning that it wont just Snap in half.

And the edge retention?? Lookout Sheriff Teasle and jerkoff Deputy Walford!! LOl. All I can say is it's drawing First Blood from them, ha ha.

Next coming to me is that amazing heart-pounding, showstopping, get-em all and get-em good Model 1 knife by my other good friend Sam Wilson. Man I cannot Wait to get my hands on my very first Sam Wilson knife and MOA sheath system!! Sam daid rhe knife is finished...Now comes the sheath which he will make tomorrow I think. The smaller knife thats part of Sam's MOA sheath system and I think the rest of the small inserted items are all done made. That awesome sheath is all Sam has left to make. I should hopefully have tht knife next week.

Then, after that one, comes the massive surprise knife model from Sam to me that he and I both came up with!! And I tell you this, its going to be the one knife that takes the hollow handle knife world, and whole knife world at that, by Storm. The design is bigggg gggg gg time, lol!! The knife is mass ssss ssive!! But Mum is the word on anything else about it, right Sam?? But I will say this....hold onto your hats and get out your napkins, hankies, and Kleenex!! Because I tell you this...all you knife lovers are going to Drool over what Sam and I have thought up, and drool over what he is making!!! Drool Drool DROOL!!! And trust me, you will Definitely be wanting to order one right awsy,!! So stay tuned!! LOL

Now I am sorry this one is so long but had much to cover. And at least I used time-out paragraphs.. At least its not one great big put-everone-to-sleep wall of text like I Used to leave, lol!! Thanks for putting up with it tho, and for reading!!

Our prayers are with you Gil, get well soon, you're a great man.

That is one very good looking knife demonbeast.

Sam, love the wax empregnated linen pouch, great idea.

That's awesome that Newt did that for you. Now it makes me want one of his hollow handled knives even more

Thanks for the razor photo, Dave.

Timberline nylon roll-up pouch dimensions:

Length side to side: 4 3/8"
Overall height opened: 2 7/8"
Pocket height: 2 1/4"
Average pocket width: 3/4"
Tie length: 6" each
Center pipe cleaner: 2 1/4"

My pouch has 6 rows of pockets. Vaughn Neeley has gone to five rows with no stitching running behind the pipe cleaner. Because of this change, the pockets are still spaced evenly, but are each a little wider. Don't forget the sides and top are folded in, so allow a little extra material. I have to admit the nylon pouch is classy.

Good luck!

Thank you very much. A friend of ours is going to make one for me. I'll post up some pics when it's done. I'm betting that it will be a great investment. Even though I don't yet have a HH knife, I do have pockets that it will fit in until I do have one.

Prayers and thoughts going out to Mr. Hibben. Thanks for the info.

Thats cool Mack, can't wait to see how it comes out. My wife told me I should just buy a sewing machine and make one. I declined lol.

I agree with your wife Cricketdave, I love my sewing machine and have made a few haversacks out of old canvas welding blankets I "borrowed" from work :) It beats paying too much money for something you can easily do yourself...and then you can make the whatever youre making exactly the way you want!
There's no shame in being a man that can sew. Hell, every mountain man and civil war soldier knew how to sew and very few people would call them unmanly :D

Oh I can sew and I have a big sewing machine in the shop, but its for leather, can't do small fine work with it on thin material. I just don't want another one to add to my clutter out there and really don't have a place to put one in the house. I could always do it by hand I just don't much want to lol.

If I know the person making this for me, it will be really nice. I will make some things myself but when someone is really good at what they do, I'm all for letting them do it and paying what their work is worth.

Hey Ronnie, good to hear from you, and good question. Having the compass in the buttcap is a somewhat debatable idea, since it pretty much rules out pounding with the knife, as that might damage a valuable instrument. But if you don't use the knife in that manner, and would prefer to have a compass in there, to my knowledge all of the makers that do so use an aluminum buttcap, as embedding the compass in steel would usually affect the performance of the magnetic needle. I hope that answers your question.

Sam

The compasses in mine have all worked fine, not precision instruments by any means. But can at least give you a bearing to head for. I've hammered tent stakes in a few times over the years with one and not damaged the compass either, course next time I try it I could bust it to bits.

For the most part, I agree with you. Chances are, you'll be just fine. And even though these are "survival knives," I believe most of us generally use them in non "survival" scenarios. But if you ever were in a bad situation, and needed your gear to function properly, you have the option of a slim to medium chance of damaging the compass by pounding with the buttcap (if the compass is placed there), or ZERO chance of damaging it if its placed elsewhere. I just prefer to minimize risk.

I may need to put a compass in a buttcap and pound away and get some idea what the possibility is for damage that way. If nothing else, it would be interesting for these types of discussions. Good post Dave.

Sam

I had one years ago that I hammered hard enough with that it caved in the skull crusher on the top of the cap. didn't bust the compass though, sure made a mess putting a lanyard on ever again though.

I was thinking about the cap and one thing that would actually be a good add would be to drill a small hole in the tip of the skull crusher lanyard loop, whatever you want to call it, and put a pointed tungsten carbide glass breaker there. Something like i've seen on folders, seems like there was a special run of zt360's from one of the retailers that had added one to the liner. It wouldn't need to be very big at all.

I had a button compass break (no longer function properly) from falling a couple of feet onto a concrete floor a couple of weeks ago. Like I said, to me, its about minimizing risk. There is NO risk of damage from pounding if you don't pound on the compass housing.

Yep, now for something cool. I was browsing the fishing department at wally world and had picked up a tiny bobber thats a chem light and saw these.

I added 4 of them to my handle there are only 1.5 inches and pretty bright, I'm seeing how long they glow.

they have the addition advantage of if you get bored at night in the woods you can tie it to a string, poke a hole in the bottom and spin it around. Looks like a predator is bleeding all over.
