THE Hollow Handle Knife Thread

These hollow knives are addictive. I have one from Newt that was for my brother that is now going to his son when he's older..long and personal story so I won't go into it. (An Aparro built quickly by Newt for me and a wonderful knife...

Now I have my eyes on all sorts...and I'm considering selling all my non hollow knives to fund more HH's. So my question is...how many of you just use HH knives and what non HH do you own and use?

OK, my friends, here are some pictures. I am sorry that they are not of the quality of many of the photos you guys post. They certainly don't do the knife justice.

And here's a fun comparison of blades with my Buck 184 and Wilderness Explorer:

I need to mention that what may appear to be a blemish on the steel in the 4th picture is really an oil smudge on the blade.

The knife feels rock-solid. I have little doubt about its toughness. This will be a user-knife.

Greg Wall was a pleasure to deal with throughout the process. I could easily recommend him to anyone wanting this style of hollow handle knife. He told me that DTG Survival is currently testing his knives out. I will have to do some searches to see what I can find.

Congratulations, bowie. Beautiful knife! That looks like a very handy size, as well. He did an excellent job. You should be very proud, as that's a fine - looking knife. I'm also glad to hear it's going to be a user. I look forward to hearing how it performs in the field, though I'm sure it will be on par with its fit/finish, which is to say great. Congratulations again!

That's a really nice looking knife. I asked mr wall a load of questions the other day and he answered them all :-)

Thanks, Sam. Very high praise indeed coming from you!

Bowie that looks sweet, I like the length of the handle. I bet it will perform just as well as a randall in the field. The fit and finish looks first rate too.

Arclightuk it depends on what I'm doing as to what knife I use, for general camping dicking around in the woods always one of the hollow handles. For more tactical use Busse Team Gemini is my favorite, its a sweet all around user too. For saddle on horseback or at cowboy action competitions a custom stag handled damascus bowie. Pretty much all the time a zt folder either the 566 or 550 as they are my favorites for around the ranch.

cricket, I was going to mention the length of the handle. At first I was surprised by how long it was. But I really like it; it is very comfortable in my hand.

I've only recently been experimenting with hollow handled knives as a foundation for a survival system, but it's been fun so far.

The one on the right is a Chris Reeve Shadow II, the one on the left is a Robson Knives X46. I'll be taking them on the next couple of camping trips with the scouts to test them out.

Thanks my friend for the as usual well thought out answer. :-)

I'm leaning towards a couple of non HH and my HH collection.

As for the X46 I have an original serial numbered one from Hopefully on the way next month. They look sweet in my eyes

Yep. Still not sure I approve of the way the cap seals... but gotta love the build quality. I need to figure out who has the 7" versions, as my usual source does not.

I know what you mean re the cap. The Robson knives versions reverted to a screw cap I believe

I spoke to Andy at Calico Forge. He said the only issue was if you were bashing stuff with it and then it may pop off but only in certain circumstances

My concern is that in some circumstances, I use a wrist lanyard, and it worries me that it will pop off if I let it hang from the lanyard.

That would concern me too Guns, I've used lanyards for years.

Today has been kind of rough for me, dropped my oldest daughter off at the airport this morning to spend a month in the LDAC course at FT Knox. First time she's been away for a month without being able to talk to her. At least I can mail her letters and goodies. I'll be counting the days until we go pick her up in Kentucky. When she graduates and commissions she will be a nurse, who also can function as a regular officer trained in land nav, platoon and squad tactics and will have rucked all over. Not really different from all the hiking and hunting trips we have taken since she was little. My wife on the other hand chose the Air Force specifically to avoid all that fun, she spent 2 weeks learning to wear the uniform and salute before being sent to her first base.

Nice. Just put in an email to Greg to start my own.

Awesome news, guns! Did you go with the model I ordered or one of his other HH styles?

When the day comes for my next custom knife purchase, I am pretty confident it will be Sam Wilson's SAFE model.
