The hyping of Chris Reeve Knifes

It certainly appears to me that his blades are mediocre at the very best, and very hit and miss with quality control.

Oh hohohoho!

So, do most of the CRK Sebenza owners buy these knives simply to play with and constantly and mindlessly flick it open and closed while sitting on the couch watching TV

Ohohoho!

they look like a bad design from the 80's, that's just me tho, i like a more modern look like a Striders

You've got to be kidding me :foot: :barf: :thumbdn:

I've never ever heard CRK criticism like this...

I was gonna answer, but I think I already answered your question on another forum and my response would remain the same. But, I will add I just cut half a lawn's worth of sod with mine yesterday and it performed the job well enough and only took 3 or 4 minutes to bring it back to shaving sharp with no damage to the blade.

Sufler,
I understand what you are saying, and you may very well be right.

The most important thing to remember is you will have to weed through both the fans and the haters on most knives when reading about them.

There will always be a lot of hype, both positive and negative.

Think about how you use your knives and look for examples of similar use.

Its the rolex of knives, timex keeps time better, but to some people rolex is worth the extra cost

1911s are awesome, but in almost all cases less reliable than new age polymer whatevers

Rather or not it is to you depends on your views of quality and utility

I have one, and I'm glad I do

I have been listening to folks bad mouth knife companies for about 50 years, Schrade, Buck, Case, Hen & Rooster (when it was hand made) and hand made knife makers, Personally I think most of it is driven by folks who cannot stand for someone else to be successful. Hardly anyone is as successful in the knife business as Chris and his outstanding wife.

In Chris's case it is a major waste of time, it just brings out his friends and admirers.

I use my 21 daily and find the S35vn excellent in all aspects, from corrosion resistance to edge holding to ease of sharpening (much easier than S30V, another superb cutlery steel). The design and workmanship is simply superb. Chris Reeve gets top marks IMHO, including service (one screw backed out, and was quickly replaced at no cost).

As others have said in the past, CR Knives are like Rolexes in the knife world. As time goes on, these knives will appreciate unlike most other blades out there. Even if you buy & use the heck out of a CRK, I can guarantee you that it will sell much faster than a brand new blade from one of the other big manufacturers. If you know how to sharpen a blade then performance is a non issue with a CR knife. I suggest that you stop buying other knives & save your money and get a CR knife. You know you want to :) Good luck!

I have one - nice inlaid model. Does it cut, yep, quite well, Is it good looking? It's OK, but they don't call them "the grey trud" for nothing. I have other knoves (a Jeff Hall #4, a DC Munroe Chimera) that will cut with the sebbie all day, but the handle on the Hall is a lot more delicate, but it's a different class of knife, as is the Chimera (which is/was also a totally different price range). My only regret? Turns out I probably should have bought a Mnandi.

The ONLY reason I stopped EDCing my Sebbie was that basically the Letherman TTi's blade is finally "good enough" for most use (aka when I'm not expecting to use a knife) that having the REST of the tools along swings the pendilum to the leatherman. When I KNOW I'm going to be cutting, the Sebbie goes in the pocket. If I'm NOT going to carry the leatherman (usally when I'm in a suit), The Hall or the WH Lancet goes in the pocket (if I want something really small)

Basically, I think there is no such thing as a "perfect" pocket knife, but in it's size/price class, it is REAL had to beat the sebbie

I used to think my little $30 Walmart special mp3 players were just as good as a $300 iPod Touch.

Until I finally broke down and bought an iPod Touch.

Bottom line? Don't pass judgement on something you have no experience with. Kinda makes you look foolish.

Who is "they", and what is a trud?

I am at the point where value is the last thing I consider when buying knives.

All that I really care about is:

-Does the overall design attract me?
-Can I afford it and still have enough money to pay my bills?

If the answer to both questions is "yes," then I will most likely buy the knife.

Hi,

The overwhelming general consensus on ALL the forums is that Chris Reeve Knifes make the best production/semi-custom knives available today. I have spent many days perusing all the
forums reading all the CRK fan boy comments...."best knife on earth", "it just feels right", etc. Ok, well thats all fine, BUT the mast majority of these folks NEVER mention the blade performance
or talk about the blade's cutting ability or the blade's edge retention or how long it holds a razor sharp edge. It ALL about fit, feel and finish and NOT the important part of how the blade cuts
and performs....I dont get it.

A very popular You Tube channel member put the large Sebenza 21 to a cutting test, and it failed miserably! Than tester got nasty, immature comments from the all CRK fanboys. It certainly
appears to me that his blades are mediocore at the very best, and very hit and miss with quality control. To me , that is unacceptable for a $425.00 knife.

So, do most of the CRK Sebenza owners buy these knives simply to play with and constantly and mindlessly flick it open and closed while sitting on the couch watching TV, or, they they acutally
use them daily and if so, what are you results with the blade performance?

Please understand this is just my opinion from all the reading I have done and the videos I have watched.

Have you examined and handled one in a store? Owned and used one? If not, all the opinion in the world isn't worth a speck of crap, really.

Well, to supplement that perhaps, some of it is driven by willful ignorance and irrationality.

I have been listening to folks bad mouth knife companies for about 50 years, Schrade, Buck, Case, Hen & Rooster (when it was hand made) and hand made knife makers, Personally I think most of it is driven by folks who cannot stand for someone else to be successful. I bought a small Sebenza long before I read any hype of them. I saw them at a gun show and fell in love with the clean lines. I bought it that day and took it home. It is the only CRK that I own, and I doubt I will buy another. I don't see the quality control that everyone brags about. It opens roughly, the clip is loose and has been from day one and I just don't see the value for the price when you compare them to ZT, Hinderer, Hogue or other quality knives. Just my .02. I'm not bashing them, they just don't have the quality I would like.

I've been on the Umnumzaan fence for many months now. My biggest problem at first was exactly what this thread is about - the hype. I gave up on the knife altogether after watching many videos that showed me nothing that would suggest hard use or even ANY use. Luckily this thread has many examples of the Umnumzaan and other CRKs in use in many different scenarios, so I'll keep this link handy and maybe actually buy one of these now...

Thank you all for the links and information!

I have a lot of knives including a Sebenza and a Umnumzaan / Wilson Combat aswell as all of the other knives you listed. I use them at work to cut open large cardboard boxes and in the field camping and I think that the CRK knives compare favorably to just about anything out there. They hold up well and they cut well. I am pretty sure if you look around enough you will find a bad review on just about any product, so you should get one and do a fair evaluation and think for yourself. Otherwise you are just blowing smoke.
