The idiot's guide to the AR-15 rifle (or an idiot building one)

you guys know about larue's monthly contest, right? he gives away close to $3k worth of rifle and goods every first of the month.

just be a bronze member or higher on arfcom and all you have to do is post a # between 1 & 2,000 when mark posts his contest thread.

when it comes to customer service and warranty...and especially charities and giving back to the community, larue is the gun-world version of esee.

are you building a piston upper or a DI upper?

ME? DI.

there's no "standard" yet for piston parts, so even with some of the more popular models, if the company folds and you need a spare part in ten or twenty years you may be SOL.

now, the Ruger looks like a decent design and they'll probably be around... but who knows, they might only be making golf clubs in twenty years.

i'm anticipating having the 5.45 upper complete for about $500. that would be with the MOE handguards, Phantom FH and probably a DD A 1.5 BUIS. if i really scrounged around i could shave the price even further.... but i'm not gonna get too crazy on reducing the price.

not counting a light or red dot. in the price, because while those are good things, it's not something the upper needs to run.

i've had rifles that i couldn't get spare parts for... and they almost turned into safe queens and then got sold off.

i usually buy them either on gunbroker or from brownells or midway depends on who's cheapest.

anybody know a good place to buy a buffer & spring & Castle nut ? I need one of each...

For what barrel length and gas system? 16" Carbine? If so, you may want to consider an 'H' buffer at a minimum.

I try to shop at places like G&R Tactical, Bravo Company, Rainier Arms, AIM Surplus, DSG Arms, PK Firearms, and others because their products are usually more competitively priced than Brownells and the like. Plus, they tend to carry better brands, have more choices, better knowledge of the AR, and I don't have to search around a massive site.

Yeah brownells seems to be a bit more pricey, but a few times, if Bravo company, Midway USA, or DSG doesnt have what I'm looking for, brownells has it.

i just hit one of my good local shops.

but they usually just have standard buffers and not H2s or anything like that.

no way i'm paying $8 to ship one castle nut!

_1 on the H or heavier buffer for a carbine.

some shops have an assortment of various weights, and will try the various weights when they're building a rifle or testing one for a customer.

the heavier buffers tend to reduce felt recoil and increase the cycling reliability when dirty. if you have a happy switch they can also reduce the cyclic rate.

TTD: if you want a standard CAR buffer, standard spring and a castle nut i might trade for something sharp. i've got all that here, but no spare heavy buffers. email me if interested.

picked up my three Aero Precision lowers and a YHM upper receiver today. looked at a surefire X300 for my new Glock 19 (one with rails, the other three have no rails). local shop has a better price than ebay for the light.

there was no wait required, i just haven't been able to get up to the shop that had 'em.

also got a box of Gold Dot 9mm to refill the spare mag of Corbon that went thru the wash. i eondered what that klunking was!

Finally got my red dot for the AR. Good ol' Mom had Kate and CricketDave track me one down for my birthday.

Vortex Strikefire. Co-witness is great with the irons. I'll be replacing them with Magpul flipups as funds allow (AKA, Never).

Great sight for the price. Great for more than the price really.

Fixer, go shoot that Cor-Bon. I bet it goes bang every time. For carry ammo, I'd rotate it too though. :D

Mike I'd love to have one of those DD A1.5 rears for my KISS carbine. I'm not spending any more gun money for a while. Okay, I am trying to finalize a sale to buy a 2nd Glock 19, but other than that I'm on the wagon. :D

For the money it's hard t beat the Strikefire I have one mounted on my Sig 556 it's solid and i've had no issues with it yet after 500 plus rounds.

Those are making the rounds up here at $150 a pop. Not a bad price for us Canadians.

What do you think of it?

local shop had a shipment of Aero Precision lowers (same as Spike's and Armalite). $75 each or buy three and the price drops to $65 each.

I think there are solid. I still would prefer and Aimpoint Eotech or ACOG. But if you don't have a budget for those the Strikefire will serve you well probably the best option at that price point.

whoops, I mean, "Very nice shotty. what mount do you have your TK10 mounted in?"

I guess I was really tired last night.
