The idiot's guide to the AR-15 rifle (or an idiot building one)

i've been playing around with 1911 pistol sights for my SBR; this was the 1st draft, a bit too much bulk, but the sights are super fast to acquire, and no need to flip up

Ver.2, I will experiment with Novak style sights and streamline the mounting bases

not sure how those will work with the magnifier and red dot i'm guessing you're planning on mounting... judging from the masgnifier mount you have on there now.

but i have seen pistol sights mounted at 2:00 on the firend. just roll the gun oover and use the iron sights. much faster than getting the magnifier out of the way.

Sweet DD bmilla!

Thanks! Havent had a chance to shoot it yet...but bought 100 rounds (almost $60 later....:grumpy:)

I am still in the process of reading the manual on it..I want to pretty familiar with it before I go out and shoot it. I hope to finish it up tonight! :D:thumbup:

holy! you, sir need to invest in a reloading equipment...i'm running 0.25/per round that's better than match-grade, off the shelf stuff from federal, hornady, etc. just gotta make it part of your drinking & partying on a friday night routine :D

p.s. all kidding aside, reloading can be deeply satisfying knowing just a tiny mistake here can blow your freaking hand off. it's just as therapeutic as hiking - you tend to focus on what you're doing and forget about all your problems

That us MUCH more acceptable that mine lol

How expensive is it to get into? My great uncle was very into it..and promised to give me all the stuff whenever he passed away. He was in good health then..and shortly after died from pancreatic cancer. I believe one of his sons wanted the stuff even though he doesn't even shoot! Oh well..not mad it's just frustrating. I would love to reload 7mm08 too because thats what I use for hunting.

you can get all the equipment for it in under $500 - single stage press (for resizing the spent shell back to spec, de-priming, priming, seating the bullet, crimping), dies, caliper, scale, manual shell trimmer, etc.

i run lee precision gear although dillon precision is considered the top level stuff (they even have the no b.s. warranty like esee). dillon is for high volume shooters due to their progressive press (1,000 rounds in an hour anyone?). i equate lee gear to the becker/ka-bar knives.

i have lee gear although i did invest in a $425 giraud powered case trimmer. there are cheaper options like $30 shell trimmers that uses a regular hand drill/press but requires more steps for you. manually trimming cases was the only part of reloading that almost made me quit though and forced me to buy a giraud. i was 29 at the time i started reloading but after trimming 100 cases manually it made my hands feel like i was 80 yrs old!

reloading is a lot of fun as long as you find extreme attention to detail enjoyable. just checked my manual - 7mm 08 rounds are in the 50,000 psi range and higher - and your face is only inches away from it! for comparison, a typical .45 acp load is 20,000 psi and it's an arm's length from your face.

did i mention attention to detail? :D if you cut yourself wrapping an izula you better not start reloading :o

Dang, I love this stuff!! Too bad my government has decided that this kinds of weapons should not be sold to civilians anymore. Oh, well... I always can drool in here and dream ever owning beauties like this or... then going estern block way and getting AK-74 and starts customizing it bit :D

Thanks for photos guys!

I guess thats not tooooo bad. Eventually it should pay itself off.

I happen to be a detail freak...so that shouldnt be a problem lol. I always take a long time doing jobs because I like to make sure they are perfect!

What I will do is keep a look out in the local papers for any reloading equipment for sale...there can be great deals found :p

I got in to reloading for under $150. It's an upgrading process. Once you get the knowledge base down, stepping up to better equipment comes in to play.

I started with a $60 (Midway closeout) Lee Anniversary kit and bought the extras a few pieces at a time. Still my favorite piece of reloading gear. Once you have all the accessories (calipers, dies, etc) upgrading presses, etc isn't too bad. As ammo prices come down, my "need" to reload gets to be less but the quality of ammo you can put out for the same money is way better. Like you can load match ammo for the price of plinking ammo, etc.

Noveske awesomeness. How do you like that drop in rail?

It's not a bad rail but it is hard to find covers to fit it & honestly it probably doesn't look as clean as i would prefer. but I do like that I can mount things at bizarre angles if I so choose. The rail & the optics were gifts from some buddies to help get me rolling after I got the rifle. The rail is made by GG&G.

Hey bmilla: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/AMM276-5.html

I bought 320 rounds for just $25 more than you. I havent shot my DD yet either, but my buddy has already shot a couple hundred rounds through his with this ammo and it's been flawless so far.

JV- I'm still sticking to my guns that the phone didnt go off!! I've done tests that prove my theory. Next week I'm going.

That's true...another possibility to consider. I am in the process of doing a genetic testing to prove I am part native american. Personally, I doubt I am, but my dad's mother claims to be related to Pocahontas...which means I must be! I certainly don't look the part with blonde hair and blue eyes. The only way I see it possible is if its through marriage with John Smith! :foot::foot: Anyways, if that pans out to be true I can go to school for basically nothing, making room for goodies like...reloading and knives and guns!

Wow...thanks! I completely forgot about that website. I should have known considering I bought stuff from there before lol

this was just an initial mockup, i'm using smaller Novak style sights on the next proto

the plan is to make them bottom third co-witness

but first I got a bunch of AR multitools to finish ;)

I'd also have a look at AIM Surplus, Wideners, Ammoman and Palmetto State Armory. You'll find good prices on ammo there as well.

:D

been playing with color filling the rollmarks on my lower, mostly because i still don't have an upper.
no pics, but testor's enamel is awesome!
