The kinda unspecified CRK talk thread.

I had a knife slip a sheath. A small sword actually, that a friend had just put a nice fresh edge on. That was almost 50 stitches….twice. Before and after surgery.

I feel your pain, brother.

Mine was an 18" Golok with a heavy, sharp blade. Doesn't compare to what you experienced...though I still have some nerve damage in the ring and pinky fingers of my right hand.

No nerve damage but the choil “bumped” off my index finger knuckle where it meets the hand. That knuckle looks like a club now.

I don’t have anything that bad, but an Emerson slipped on me and gave me 6 stitches on my left index finger. Almost hit the tendon.

Good lord!

So I bought some Viton o-rings for my Umnumzaan. I’ve been hearing how great they were as replacements for the stock ones.
I’m not a fan. They are fantastic if you are flicking / flipping the knife open but if you slow roll they effect the lock timing and don’t lock up well at all. Actually lock up so early that a gentle push in the top of the blade is all it takes for the lock to fail. They are just too solid to compress and you can actually see them deform instead.
Back to stock for me.

I removed the stock ones. The sound of the Ti studs on the Ti frame is very nice.

I haven’t used Viton.
I like the basic Home Depot O-rings better than the CRK polywhateverene.
The opening ‘thug’ is a bit more muted and gratifying imo.

That's all very well, but what if Kettleman Kettleman has to go into silent ninja mode on some evildoers? Garrotes are so two weeks ago.

☺️
You just never know!! I honestly do like how quiet the Zaan is. I spend a good deal of time in the office these days and quiet is much less threatening to the gals….

Funny, I just had this same experience. I ended up just working the Viton rings in and they lockup better now. I compared them to stock after a bit of opening and now they’re at the same percentage more or less.

I really could not stand how quickly the stock rings flattened, that was my main reason to switch. I love that CRK click, but the Zaan just feels so good quiet.

Maybe I’ll give breaking in a set once this thumb heals and I can get the reps on the knife. I do love how quiet they are!

That excitement / relief / sadness you feel when you have completed your collection ( for now of course) and can un-watch the Chris Reeve Knives for sale thread!!!

I know what you mean, but I really do want to be finished. I was actually quite content until Tim Reeve dropped this whole magnacut thing on us. It's been an upheaval. I think I'm done?

When I decided I was in a place that I could let myself have a bit of a collection I made a commitment to myself that I would limit it to the 5 knives I really wanted to have.

Umnumzaan - ✔️
Inkosi- ✔️
Mnandi-✔️
Large 21-located
Small 21-inbound

I may not keep these exact knives, like if I trade into an OP Zaan for example or decide the Large 21 should be Damascus or some such. However other than that type of thing I’m content.

Five seems to be the right number for me, too. Right now I've got six and the collection feels a little top heavy, like I don't use each knife quite enough. I do struggle to let them go.

I’m in the same boat now that I’m making a decent salary.
As much as I want other CRKs, the Mnandi and Large 21 are doing most everything I need. If I could find a small 21 insingo I’d probably snag that, but I’m pretty content even though I can afford whatever I’d like.
