The King

I don’t know about that. Having worked with hatchet, small axe, and big knife to do that task, I find the knife the safest. Not sure what I’m missing.

axes usually have both hands on the thing. it's REALLY hard to hit yourself with a controlled axe.

hatchets are pretty dangerous, esp for newbies. you can hit lots of body parts. an axe will usually turf itself, or at least be arms away...

hatchets and large knives can often deflect and the reciprocal angle drives them nicely into you leg, side, arm, or head

when you are cold, and/or tired, and/or just not with it, put the stuff down, and walk away, i said, walk away lefty!

Yeah, I’ve had deflections. Actually, only remember one. That was with a kukri. Scared me. Have never had one with a knife or machete. But I’ll remember your words of wisdom.

The cool thing about the 9 for me is that it seems big and like a dedicated chopper, until you realize that the length and weight are very balanced. It is very good at chopping and punches well above its weight, but not the best chopper imo. The good thing about that is it does knife stuff very well too.
Great chopper territory for me these days is at least 12 inches.
What do you like for a big chopping knife (minus the big $)??

The condor engineer bolo is pretty amazing, its just so heavy it wears you out fast and its hard to lug around. i believe that comes in at about 15 inches.
Got a kershaw camp 18 not too long ago, so far very impressed at 18 inches.
Love my busse bb13 that i got in a trade. It has a 13 inch blade.
The becker bk20 is decent at chopping but can do knife stuff well still without feeling too awkward. It has a 12 inch blade. I see why Ethan said (he read) that this was the ideal length for a survival machete. With the bb13, even though it is only an inch longer, you can feel the difference in the finer work.
Really dig the tops .230 machete too, had the .170 but it was so close in basic design and function to the bk 20 i decided to sell it to fund the .230. Might get another one one day. The .230 is a suped up ontario 18 inch and they reworked it so techinically the cutting edge is around 15 inches but the extra length went into the handle so you still have plenty of reach and leverage. Its also thicker than your average machete (they just came out with it ina black coating instead of the grey, i think it looks much better)
For smaller bades more comparable to the king:
The junglas is pretty good and the condor duku is alright too but that only has like a 10 1/2 inch blade. Really like my Terava Skrama too. The sp53 packs a huge punch for such a short blade (i think its at 9 inches).

Also to consider is where the weight is distributed, not just the length.

Awesome! I love the 5160 sp53 once I re-profiled and put a convex edge on it to bite in better. The Junglas is such a great knife too, almost every little thing about it is spot on. I got my brother the kershaw camp 10 for xmas last year for like $30. The factory edge is sharp, but thin and prone to chipping, I probably should have ground it out some. I kind of wish I had my own, great knife. I agree that Condor makes some fantastc beasts for great value. I opted for the bushcraft parang and I'm really impressed. It seems like it was engineered to consider the angle of the handle to the edge (huge sweet spot) and the forward weight to really do some damage and feel right. The bb13 looks awesome! I love the size & bolo shape and wish I had one, but it probably costs the same as a new refridgerator. U dver get a chance to put a bk21 or condor kukri machete through the paces? I wonder how they would compare. Also, a nod to the forum, King BK-9 does earn it's title with it's all around versatility and efficiency.

Ya, that 5160 steel is amazing, they really did a great job with the sp gen II line, sad its been discontinued.
I like the kershaw camp 10 for a budget chopper but the sp53 is so much better in every way (imo)i always go for that.
Ive been looking at more parang and the the village parang or the full size duku is what i think i’ll try next. Maybe ill get the bushcraft parang as well, it looks solid!
I love the recurve on the bb13, i was super lucky that i had something he wanted to trade for, i wouldnt have been able to get it otherwise.
I have been looking at the kukri machete and want to try one soon! It looks more like an enep or bolo imo which is what i am more into. Havent ever handled a 21 but knowing it a becker and all of the praise it gets here i know its worthy! I think 91bravo 91bravo might use his in a blue moon ;)

I beat that BK21 like a red-headed step-knife before I sent it off to Tanker 1/66 Tanker 1/66 !

If I may ask...?
How is it compared to the other big Beckers (20 and 29 I think?) ??? I keep drooling over the 20, and I just wonder if the 21 is actually a better chopper/splitter than the 20 and maybe I shouldn't even care that I cant get one? Is the 21 the biggest/baddest Becker I'm ever going to find?
idk why I haven't picked one up yet?

I believe the BK21 is the biggest, baddest Becker there is. This is all just my own opinion though. The BK20/29 felt a little too forward heavy for me. It felt like it wanted to slip out of my hand sometimes after chopping for a while. I think the BK21 feels more balanced and quicker in hand, but just as powerful on the chop. For me, that takes the cake. The BK21, is not a little boy's knife...

Because everyone is different and what you are chopping makes a difference it's a tough call o_O Edges also are a game changer. Just cause a blade is new doesn't mean the edge is any good . But having a 21 and a 20 the 21 will sink deeper. The 20 having a thicker blade splits better. I like both of them they are good blades :D A lot of people don't like the Parangatang or I should say the handle on it but it seems to be darn good chopper too :p I haven't used it much. I guess I have to many Knives

I'm going to start using it more
