The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

This might deserve it's own thread, maybe, but I figured I'd ask here first.... Anybody have a GEC Pioneer? How do you like it? I'm thinking about pulling the trigger, but wanted to know one thing - are they tough enough to take the place of a modern folder? I don't want to have to baby it.

If that gets no responses here, I'll post it in the Traditional forum.

Off topic, but too funny not to share: Somebody at work has been stealing my water bottles out of the fridge. Sooooo.... I made up a few custom labels the other day. Strangely, my water bottles are all still there the next day:

Funny thing is - all the chit on the label is true!

Lol AntDog, I don't own a GEC pioneer, the only GEC I currently own is a 47 Viper, tough as nails.

I really just came here to tell you that you're a nut! You could've poked holes in the tiny space between the cap and where the water sits in an unopened bottle, and just let it spray them as they tilt up for a refreshing sip of STOLEN WATER!!!

Annoyed by tip down only folders. Really like the Spyderco Farid K2 and Military, but the clip position ruins it.

Yeah, my Dad said "don't get the HazMat spacesuits called out there!".... So, it was fun while it lasted, and hopfully they got the point. I'll just put em in there with no label and let em guess if it's refreshing water, or "Dihydrogen Monoxide" the hazardous chemical..

So GECs are pretty tough? Think they can hang with a modern folder? I really want to get one and use the heck out if it, but I don't want to go easy on it. It will be slicing tons of strapping, cardboard, plastic jugs, shrinkwrap, etc, so it's got to be stout.

Well, I don't think they can hang with modern folders. For the things you just mentioned, it should be fine, no babying necessary. I personally would prefer to use a modern folder for that kind of stuff but I do think the Pioneer would do alright. I usually carry my GEC or any other slipjoint as a companion to a modern folder, not that I need both, it's just fun. Considering that, they perform similarly for the above mentioned tasks.

So you got a K2? Is it really as epic as everyone says?

No. Considered it, but I just couldn't buy with that tip down clip. Same with military, though I may buy one and have custom scales drilled for tip up.

Finally done with my Street Scalpel project.

Came out pretty good. The thing lives up to it's name now. It really is a Street Scalpel!

A #23 will be fine... if you are concerned about it being a slip joint, they make them with a liner-lock that is excellent; otherwise it is a just as tough as a Buck 110 with less fine a tip (drop point). Keep in mind, it's 1095 (done very well though). I have 2 and love them.

The regrind game is STRONK with this one, great job AntDog! Enjoy your restored blade my friend!

Thanks!

I wasn't concerned at all about it being a slipjoint. Hell, when I was a kid, that's all we knew! I just wanted to know if the 23 was tough enough to stand up to moderate to heavy use.

I just want to be able to throw it in my pocket and go, and not have to bring any modern knife to handle the tougher stuff. I'm not going to intentionally try to break it, but I didn't want to have to baby it either.

I figured based on you favorite knife thread a while back--and yes, it will handle the work. It's a great knife. buy with confidence!

Here's my #23 double liner lock

Thanks buddy! I can't believe I put that off for so long! This sharp little sucker will be on my belt for quite a while. I really did miss it.

Oh man, that's awesome! Thanks for the great photos!

My pleasure, brother--happy hunting for your #23. My advice is the go through GEC's page and check their listed dealers--there are some excellent knives at great prices to be had. If you are interested in my personal favorite guys to buy from, pm me.

Thanky kindly my friend! And hey - YOU actually gave ME some great advice! (Young whippersnapper....)

It looks much better with a gradual curve to it than it would have just lopped off like I had planned on. The way it is now, it looks like the grind goes up toward the spine, straightens out along the spine, then settles down to a nice drop point. It makes for a very nice and visually pleasing line! It works great too. I cut up all kinds of stuff last night just to get reacquainted. I'm very happy with her once again. :)

Some dickhead was stealing my sandwiches out of a company fridge. That stopped once I laid unraveled condoms over my bagged lunch. Haha, don't have to deal with that crap anymore.

No problem, and great to hear that you're happy with the final product:thumbup:

In other news, I've noticed that I've been carrying my chaparral less and less lately, and I'm not sure why..... In many ways it's the perfect little Edc blade, and yet I don't have any urge to carry it on a regular basis. I think it's the small size and thinness of the blade that keep me from using it as my dedicated Edc. I usually prefer something with a bit more heft (even though the chances I'll need that heft on a typical day are pretty slim) I guess it's a subconscious thing more than anything else.

How about you guys? Do you feel under knifed if youre only carrying a thin gentlemans folder for the day?
