Thanks a ton! I will definitely be working on it once I have the supplies.

Also, super nice insignio!

No worries man! I wish the Insingo were mine!! Did it for a client, and according to USPS, he should be getting it in 2 hours.

Today's project is undeserving of it's own thread I think, so I'll put it here.

I've had a Tops Street Scalpel for about 15 years. I paid $20 for it. One day my family and I went for a walk. We left out the back door (which we did not have a key for). I forgot I had locked the chain lock on the front door.... When we got back, it was either break a window ($50) or use the street scalpel to pry the screws out of the door frame to get the chain off (wood filler and paint are cheap!).... So, you can guess how the story went. The Scalpel won the war, but made a heavy sacrifice in doing so. She's been tipless for about the last 12 years.

I sent an email to Tops about it, and they said "sure, send it in (using their specific shipping method), and include return postage (using their specific shipping method), and we will see what we can do. Probably regrind the tip." Well, I looked into it, and it would have cost me $20 to send the knife in for them to regrind the tip, or replace it at their discretion. The thing is: this is one of the old carbon steel scalpels. Last I heard, they had switched to some type of stainless. So I don't want a bunk replacement, and I figured I could regrind the tip just fine. I've done much more in depth mods on my knives in the past.

I've decided I will (finally!) fix it myself. I think I have 2 options: tanto, or grind the spine down to meet the tip making it a drop point. What do you gentlemen think?

She's sad with no tip:

One option of how to fix it:

Sure, that would work. But I would try to make It more gradual. Obviously it would take more time, but I think it would look better that way

Almost done. I did make it more gradual.

I started out trying to use a file. Nada. So I switched to a bastard file. Eh, still nada. Tried 80 grit sandpaper. That hogged it away a little faster, but it would have taken forever.

I finally said "screw it" and broke out the angle grinder. One pass, dunk. One pass, dunk. Until I got the profile close enough to get the rest of the way with sandpaper.

Now all I really need to do is sharpen the heck out of it (I hit the edge LOTS of times with the file on accident!) and refine the tip a little more.

Pics incoming when I'm finished.

Looking forward to the pics brother. Takes me back to when I broke my griptilian's tip damn near 10 years ago now. Sheepsfoot. I ended up doing what you did but gave it a fully sharpened swedge on the spine where the tip broke. Miss that knife all the time. Would've looked great today, with some KM scales.

Also, super nice insignio!

Update on that, client got it today and is head over heels for it. How're you liking your Umnumzaan btw?

So far the Umnumzaan is the best knife I have ever had. Fit and finish are fantastic and it is very smooth. I was very worried at first because it wasn't very smooth and it was super hard to open. After cleaning it and lubing it up and dealing with thumb blisters, I can now open it really easily and I have a callous on my thumb. I am hoping to anodized the scales though to make it more personal to me.

Yeah, I'd definitely love to see the finished product.

Slightly off topic, but I was taking a pic of my Thermite in my office and a couple of people come up asking for help. I immediately felt like an idiot haha. Luckily I closed the knife and slid it in my pocket without them noticing.

Moral of the story: Mind your surroundings. It doesn't matter how fantastic the lighting is :D

The good: My TSF Beast is on its way back from getting worked on. Got car back from the shop, all pretty no more scratches.
The bad: I'm dead broke. Just dropped $845 at the body shop. ESEE 5 (used once) is going on the block along with the BM 585, 530, Spyderco Caly 3 CF.
The ugly: I want a SG Bad Monkey Tanto something fierce.

Progress update:

It is a little more gradual than I had first planned. I think it looks ok? Check out the "divots" I took outta the edge with that file! LMAO! Whoa......

To finish it off, I'm gonna sharpen the hell out of it and take just a touch more off the spine until it meets a nice, clean, pointy tip (with sandpaper - the major hogging away is done).

Meh, not too impressive. It is what it is. I think it'll at least be functional, and I'll be able to put her back into service. I missed the little bugger!

Good job, Ratmandude. :) But I still want that SERE of yours.

Ratmandude.... That has a nice ring to it! LMAO! (When I saw that I sprayed brew!)

If you want my Sere that bad, I'll leave it to you. For real. I'll bequeath it to you in my will, cuz that's the only way you'll get it!

Here's a couple of "glamour shots" to tide you over til then:

Edited to add: thanks bro! I tried. Just wanted to make her usable again.

Looks good so far.

Thank ya brother. Hey - how did that double edged griptilian work out? Did it slice up your pants any? I have one folder in mind that I'd like to try that with, but I've always been apprehensive about it, since I thought it might cut it's way out of my pocket.

Mine turned out fine since it was only about 1/8" to 1/16" of tip loss. Never sliced my pants. Just gave my Grip the ability to pierce on the sheepsfoot configuration. I'd be apprehensive about leaving the edge exposed where it can make contact with your pocket, as well.

I want to use my BM 531 to cut citrus fruit at work sometimes. I'm worried about gumming up the axis lock though. Is there any special cleaning method, and will i need to relive every time?
