The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

I want to use my BM 531 to cut citrus fruit at work sometimes. I'm worried about gumming up the axis lock though. Is there any special cleaning method, and will i need to relive every time?

It will be fine, just rinse it out and blow it out. BM has had mixed quality in some aspects of their knives as of late, but the axis-lock isn't one of those aspects. It's the one thing that BM has consistently made ROCK solid and maintainable for several years. I beat the living shit out of my BM5000, and it's never had an issue, even with citrus juices getting into it, and consider that knife is an auto-axis! Owned about 15 other BMs in the past, never a problem.

Ratmandude.... That has a nice ring to it! LMAO! (When I saw that I sprayed brew!)

If you want my Sere that bad, I'll leave it to you. For real. I'll bequeath it to you in my will, cuz that's the only way you'll get it!

Here's a couple of "glamour shots" to tide you over til then:

Those pics made me go blind. I think you did that on purpose. But by God I can still type.

I'm never going to buy another knife but a SERE will probably be my next one.

First time you flashed that 'du of yours that came immediately to mind. Hey man, I know they're great. That one, however, will probably always be the "one that got away" for me.. just can't justify another 5"-range blade.

When I get it I'll let you know.

Ok so along the topic of the knife life, I play in a band and we all came to my house and jammed. I showed the guys my knife collection and the drummer was super impressed by my knives, I had just gotten the Umnumzaan (so very recently) and he was the only one that wasn't freaking out about the fact that I paid that much for a knife. By the time he left I had given him a list of we'll known knife brands Spyderco, benchmade, CRK etc. When I asked him his limit for buying a good knife he was like "Well I was looking for one under $500" , and I was like dude you could get anything you want.
Anyway, bottom line, I have a convert to the wonderful and expensive Knife Life. :)

Good job. Ya done well.

I just got the CQC-7A I traded my ZT801 for. Put a bastard of an edge on it immediately. BM's 154CM has been letting me down lately but this CQC7 has reminded me why I used to like it so much as a solid performing, well rounded steel.

Thank you my friend! Hah yeah, I thought it'd serve as a cool text block to mirror against. I should've dropped the blade closer to the box to get a better reflection though. This thing looks awesome next to my CF DT Sebenza and CF inlayed Zippo! I just might hang onto this knife.

Wow! Nice job Zeta! That is one badass Emerson.

Thank you brother! It is a very cool knife! If you look through the traditionals Sub, you'll find a thread where I was having trouble getting an edge on my GEC 47 haha! Very embarrassing. As much as I pride my freehand sharpened edges, I am only as good as my level of commitment and concentration is on a given day :grumpy:

This next pic makes me SOOO happy. One of my anodizing clients sent me this to show himself carrying both of his Sebenzas that I anodized. That blue one to the left was my very first Sebenza and I took it through 3 different finishes and still managed to find it a good home for a mere $50 under what I payed for it, after months of proper use!

^^^Nice! Lookin good brother!

That's got me scanning my memory banks trying to remember if I have any Ti...... Don't think I do currently, but I sure wish I did. If I did, I'd send it your way for sure.

Speaking of sharpening.....

I just got a very nice edge on my 0801BLK. Nearly mirror polished, and all done freehand. Well, not really... I started with the sharpmaker fine rods, but then I spent a good 10 minutes on a really fine stone to see how well I could polish it. Finished it off with a compound loaded strop, and she came out really nice.

The only thing that bugs me is how "dull" it is compared to my delica.... I guess it's just that the edge geometry is thicker, being that it's set to 40 inclusive rather than 30. It's not that it's not sharp per se...... it slices paper effortlessly, but it doesn't quite shave as well as I expected from a knife with that level of polish.... Hmmm, whatever. It works well and that's all that really matters

I'll see if I can get a good pic of it. The lightings really crappy right now

Yeah, man....

Krissig - looks good!

If it's mirror polished, and cuts paper, but doesn't shave - I'm thinking maybe slight wire edge.... Maybe..... Try running it on your strop more. A lot more. If you don't get the results you want, make the angle steeper. Just keep that angle consistent, strop it more. I think you'll be tree-topping hairs in no time.

Thanks, that means a lot to me!

I agree with AntDog, it is probably just a wire edge that struggles to shave unless it's at a certain angle. I'm a big proponent of stropping, because you can refine an edge to very impressive levels, and keep it there if you touch it up so often. There is a downside to using a strop in my opinion, however. You're basically bending the steel back and forth into shape at a very thin point and stressing it. When there is damaged steel that needs to come off, it gets further damaged while stropping it. The edge becomes susceptible to rolling and chipping easier than it would be, and considering that you only used the fine rods to start with, you wouldn't have removed enough of the damaged steel to take off the wire edge. This isn't a criticism by any means by the way, your edge looks great and sounds functionally fine. Just wanted to expand a bit on the wire edge thing because it's bothered me more times than I'd like to recall. I've been keeping my every day knife's edge convexed for a while now to hold onto my edge as long as possible, while still stropping it whenever necessary. Seems to make up for the retention lost in super polishing your edge, or maybe I just want to think it does :D

Thanks for the tips guys. So do you think I should try stropping it more? Or less? I almost feel like it's sharper before I strop it...... Hmmm

And just FYI, it definitely shaves well. It just doesn't shave WELL, if you know what I mean:)

I can always tell when it's reached its limit of sharpness, and this isn't quite it.

I know what you mean. So, you should still strop it, not more, or less really, just start coarser. Elmax is pretty tough stuff, I'd go down to the medium stones, then the fine stones, then strop. Ideally move from the fine stones to the optional ultra fine stones or a bench stone at 1500-2000 grit before stropping. If there is a wire edge there, you'll get rid of it a lot faster on the medium stones or coarser stones if you have them. You might want to strop at a steeper angle if it seems duller after you are done stropping.

Alright, well I took it back to a coarser stone, then the sharpamaker fine stones, followed by my really fine stone, and finally the strop. The edge is now EXCELLENT. There's only one small area that's still a little less sharp than I'd like, so I think I'm pretty happy about it overall. Thanks for the advice guys:thumbup:

On a side note, I'm loving this 0801. It fell out of favor for a little while, but now I'm carrying it again. I had forgotten how awesome it was

Nice , glad AntDog and I were on the right page with the wire edge. Good job dude. Yeah the 801 is a beast of a knife, really can't wait to get a Blackwash!! I kind of miss mine but this Protech CQC7 is waaaay too cool! I understand the small "less sharp" spot. Where is it exactly? When that happens to me, it's always right between the last 1/8" of the tip and the belly. Just one, tiny little spot. Bugs the heck out of me!!

That's exactly what I get when sharpening the Contego, 0770cf, 0566, and most of my other knives, but for some reason on the 0801 it's just a little bit farther back than that. The weird thing is that that particular spot is usually the area I can get sharpest on most of my knives.. I recently adjusted my freehand technique, so now everything else is getting sharp but just that one spot is staying a little duller. Hmm.... It kinda bugs me, but it's really not that big of a deal. I don't usually use that part for anything requiring a super sharp edge. As long as it's super sharp near the tip, and from the middle to the back, I'm fine with it.
