The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

When I get a knife for Christmas and it comes in before the big day, it goes into my pocket until Christmas Eve. Then it gets wrapped and put under the tree for me to "act surprised and open it".

Yeah, that waiting game - homey don't play dat.

Krissig, I feel your pain right now, grinding away on lil stabby. Been there before, on nearly all my lil stabbies as well (and the one big stabby).

edit: AntDog, regarding "lil stabby", you put this evil on us. :D

I figured I'd bump the thread since it was starting to get burried. The mini grip gaw is still open(see post 662). 4 more days.
Is it wrong that I keep playing with my new knife/ christmas present when no one is looking? They've yet to wrap it, so when the coast is clear I sneak into the living room and get a few flips in. It feels wrong yet oh so right.
Haha..That is hilarious and something I would do. If my wife bought me a knife for Christmas and I knew where it was "stashed", I would probably go in and play with it while she's not home. I guess that's why she calls me her 44 year old kid. :D
Now she just orders my toys and has them delivered to someone else until Christmas.

Ah hell, I'm in then! And no it's not wrong at all lol!

Once a new knife comes into my house, into the pocket it goes! I don't care if it's a Christmas gift haha.

Harris, I sent you a text man.

Sorry bro! But, hey it makes me laugh every time I see it. :) I can just imagine all of us full grown men yelling to our wives "have you seen "lil stabby"? I think it was in my pants last night!

I knew there was a joke in there somewhere!

Hey HOKIE, I've been REALLY busy lately so I haven't been able to ship yet. Sorry about the delay. But you have my word you'll get it before Christmas

That's fine buddy. I know we are all crazy busy this time of year. I'm just grateful to be getting it. :)

Guess i'll drop a random one since I hardly spend any time in the General forum and just found this thread:

Going through my "collection" and sorting out the users from the ones that don't get carried. Time to thin the herd once again. Hopefully i'll get them out after New Years once most of the holiday shipping frenzy has calmed down. Its not easy to cut the collection down. I'd like to keep all of them, but I don't use them all (and holiday spending went a little too far this year).

Today I received my new red and black micarta handled fire steel from bark river today, along with a new pocket sheath intended for use with my new Bradford guardian3. Now I dunno where I saw, read, or possibly dreamed it all up, but I recall being informed that the choil on the guardian3 will work well for a fire steel.

Well, it doesn't.

I know I know, I should have got a saber grind if that's what I wanted but I recall seeing or reading that the choil was ok to use! So now the system I had intended to create will not work anymore. On top of that, I have carbon fiber scales for the guardian3 on the way when I wish I had a knife with a saber grind to put them on, but now after buying a knife and scales I can't justify buying another of the same knife knife just because the grind on this one won't work for the function I want it to, yet the result of the former scenario will be not using the guardian at all because now it doesn't fit my needs. Oh well. After all that in retrospect I've never even started a fire with a ferro rod, but it would have been nice to have a system on deck to carry or have for a bug out or whatever. Anyway, that's my minor knife topic that's bugging me today...

It's kind of pathetic that the crappy metal thing that comes in the KnivesShipFree fire kit shoots hella more sparks all over off the new ferro while the guardian's choil barely at all.

I suppose this kind of spawns off me buying this

I'm excited to make my way through this book, although I was a Life Scout nearly Eagle (but not quite :/) I'm sure it contains a plethora of knowledge I'll enjoy learning.

Oh! I almost forgot. I picked up the Benchmade 761 and seriously I think everyone needs to try it. It boasts this 3.73 inch blade but it's so LIGHT! And SLIM! The design is very well put together, the lockbar and interface interlock together and the noise and sight of it screams precision. I'll hold this closer to a Sebenza than any other I've acquired or seen recently. It's the first Benchmade I've purchased new (out of 6 total) that is perfectly centered, and I actually didn't even worry about it initially because of the quality the knife oozed.

Like I was caught in a moment, where if this addiction had a peak or a climax, if you will, that I experienced one of the best I've had yet at that very moment if initial handling.

It was that good hahahahaha
The standoffs are machined in a way that is aesthetically pleasing to me

It's got jimping at the top and bottom of the handle for either grip...it's a winner all around a swear.
It came roaring sharp out of the box.
Like slicing thick bubbled manilla packages open as if it were just a sheet of paper.
Seriously though I know having a tip down knife SUCKS but it's actually very clever how the pivot is covered by it, it's really plays into the design of it all. It's not even that bad to deploy, it putting it away that I'm having trouble getting used to.

Oh! And the titanium takes scratches so well that it's going to gain so much character so fast....I will say this. If you are anal about scratches on your knife handle I wouldn't recommend....this thing want character, and it wants it now.

I'm not a bench made employee or anything, you can look at one of my first posts here to see that very clearly haha.

Enough rambling for now I suppose

The guardians choil wasn't designed to throw sparks in the same way as the "crappy metal thing" that came with it was. You've been reading too much, my friend.

And no, you don't NEED a saber grind to throw sparks...... I'm not sure where you got that idea. You just need a good 90 degree corner on the the spine of the blade. And carbon steel tends to throw sparks a little better than stainless, so the m390 is prbably not helping.

Best of luck finding a system that works for you man! I remember when I first started getting into that kind of stuff. I've started plenty of ferro rod fires since then, and its not that hard once you have the right set up. I actually carry a small ferro rod around on my keychain now because I love the idea of always having it just in case.

Yea after the failed attempt I went back and looked through the media I recalled looking into and could not find that statement anywhere...I must have told myself that in my sleep or something lol. I just meant that I would need the saber ground version of the guardian to have a better shot at sparks, and having already bought a new set of scales after learning of their existence, I just couldn't buy another of the same knife until I really use this first one. I bought this as a user, and my goal is to get it messy! So that's what needs to happen, one way or another!!!

Again, I don't see how the guardian will work any better with a saber grind..... The spine of the FFG version should work well enough as long as the corners are sharp.

The funny thing is that some of my most used outdoor knives have dulled corners on their spines because of all the fires they've started, so sometimes I find a have to use the edge  (relax, it's at the very back right Befor the choil:D)
A nice sharp edge will send sparks ten feet away;)

I use a bic brand fire starter. I think that would solve your problem for about $1.19. That way you can use your knife to cut stuff.

Or you can buy another $160 knife to make sparky fires...

I've been looking at that bm761, and while admitedly its one sexy knife I just cant get past the fact that its still a benchmade. If you can't tell I have my issues with the company, but I will say that atleast they are finaly breaking out of the axis lock box.
Me and my dad just whent shopping for a set of kitchen knives for me and my mom, and we settled on henckels twin pro. I'm pretty stoked. I had different ideas of what I wanted, but there just wwasn't that much of a selection without ordering online which he despises. Still it will be nice to have some decent cooking knives for once. I'm in culinary school and am ashamed to say I've never used anything but food network stars promoted wal mart crap.

That's definately one way of looking at it:D

I can't speak for sir dabble, but for me it's just a fun thing to do when camping. Why use a bic when you could use the opportunity to hone your skills? Namsayin, mane?;)

I obviously don't use the edge of my knife very often when I'm doing it either. Ive just tried it a few times and seen that it WOULD work very well should you need it to in a bad situation.

I know, I know.... I was just trying to put it in perspective. I've made plenty of "sparky fires" in my day. Just sayin I wouldn't buy a $160 knife when the tool that came with the rod works fine.

Gnometalmbout?

Or, like you said, just use the spine. I've never tried to strike a ferro rod with a choil. If you have a nice, flat spine that works fine. I'd just change that (if anything) instead of buying a new knife.

I gotcha. And I fully agree when it comes to OPs situation.

And you win with "Gnometalmbout" :D

I'm not sure why everyone wants benchmades with framelocks:confused:

Axis locks are their thing! They do them very well, why change?

And with the QC issues that seem to be popping up more often nowadays, youd think that people would be a little more weary of a change to framelocks, which BM has never really been big on......

I've owned 1 Benchmade in my life and sold it the day I got it in. Not my thing.
