The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

Aint it the truth...
And man, I really liked that Protech. I only saw you post it once. I really dig his designs with the bolsters.

And I'm glad someone is getting some use out of that mini grip.

I loved that knife but, the original owner is a knife community friend, and he just had a daughter. He was missing the CQC a lot so I sold it back to him for an excellent price. I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss it though.

I love this thread, but everyone go buy an Ontario Rat 1 and one of Hardedge's fixed squalls in 1095 for about $65 total and tell me what else you need? Lime what they cant do as well as ...

They can do anything an expensive knife can. There's more to it than that, though. You have to keep in mind, not many folks know an expensive knife from a cheap one, so there's really no one to impress, so there has to be more to it than pure cutting performance.

Why does this get asked so much on BF?

If this was the "everything forum" then I might be able to understand how this could be a valid viewpoint. But since this forum is specifically for people who already admit to enjoying knives in a manner that isn't 100% driven by rationality, I don't really see why anyone brings this up anymore..........

You mean they make cheep knives!?!? Why didn't anyone tell me this sooner? Here I was wasting my money on nice knives, like a sucker I might add. Someone needs to inform the others on this sight!
okay, I'm done.

Dude, I carried m-techs and gas station knives that cost all of $2 that would do everything a Rat would do. There's just more to it than pure cutting ability.

I'm generally in agreement with the sentiment here, but there is an asterisk. My $384.95 Lionsteel TiSpine will hold an edge longer than a Rat 1, and is more corrosion resistant.

BUT...

It will not hold an edge longer or resist corrosion any better than a Spyderco Native 5 in CPM S35VN (about $89, I think), and I consider it fair to say that a Delica or Endura in VG-10 is a good enough balance of edge retention and ease of maintenance to be called comparable from a performance standpoint.

I feel that there is a sweet spot for performance in the $65 to $250 range, where you can get anything from VG-10 to M390, which are the same level of steels used in many blades far above that price range. I'm also a big enough fan of S35VN that I'd say you don't need to go over $100 to get pretty optimal EDC performance.

Stepping back to the start, I freely admit that a Rat 1 is inexpensive enough and easy enough to maintain that it isn't strictly necessary to go over $40. In my opinion, the Rat 1 is King of Beasts in that range, and is to that price point as a Sebenza is to its own.

Well said.

In addition, I'd like to add that I think Spyderco knives are very hard to beat for their prices. They easily out perform most folding knives in terms of cutting performance and they are often offered in top quality steels, while offering a reasonably good fit in finish, and excellent quality all around on their pricier models. They look goofy to me but those goofy looking blades sure do their job well.

Again, I don't think this discussion has any place in a forum like this. Everyone here already gives knives more worth than than the rest of the world does.

We're all knife enthusiasts, so not one of us can honestly argue the point that cheap knives are all anyone needs.....

Hey so where the hell is AntDog??

Dudes probably just sitting back and rolling his eyes at my dual stabbiness:D

We all know what you're thinking AntDog:
"oh sure, but he'll never end up using it........the whippersnapper"

:p

Well got dayum! I have ONE tough, busy day at work and you get not one, but TWO lil stabbies?! One with a fresh edge?!

Seriously, congrats man! And I'm glad to see you weren't skeerd to use that nice fresh edge!

They both look great! I really dig that wood. It looks like coffee when you add cream and it makes all those nice swirly patterns. Very pretty!

It's a knife specific topic on a knife specific board, and it is pointedly honest to say that cheap knives may be all we NEED. Your post is strictly wrong in its wording.

Your sentiment is rooted in something I and many or most others here agree with: the position that want is a perfectly acceptable reason to buy. I certainly didn't buy the TiSpine because I needed it. The last buy that got me legitimate performance improvement was 4 blades ago. The last 3 have been lust, and I'm not ashamed of that.

Come on man, you can make it! Just fondle the ones you already have. That's how I made it through this past long weekend. And I didn't even have any CRKs to fondle:eek:
Had to make do with spydies:)

Have you ever had any wood inlays in your collection?

Huh huh huh huh, he said "wood in your erection"... I mean, collection. :P

I was wondering the same thing. I was waiting for him to fly in here or my email inbox one day to tell me I'm young and stupid for selling the Rolex! Ole tired ass, ole custom stabby carryin' ass. :D

Oh yeah, I sold my Protech CQC-7A w/ CF also.... :ambivalence:

You sold the Roley? Fo shame!

Hey now, I'm not THAT damn old! But I am pretty damn tired. I just pulled a 15 hour shift!

Haha great to hear from you man! Glad we could lure you out. Yup, but I did replace it!

Damn, I must've missed it! Whatcha get?

Oh and sorry for the delay in participation. I was just really busy. Had a pretty bad day, and when I got home my wife had a certified letter from the state saying one of my cars had been towed! It's gonna cost me an arm, a leg, and two peckers to get it out of impound.

So, yeah. Crappy day, but tomorrow's a new one.

Very nice! Man, that's a sharp looking timepiece for the real.
Thanks man, it was a tough call between a few Seamasters. I sold the Submariner knowing there's a ceramic Sub for me down the road. Didn't wear as nicely as the Omega (my Sub was an older one, ref. 14060. ) How's that custom? You been using it a lot? We need some new photos!

Thanks Dog.

I wasn't sure how much I would like wood on a sebenza, but it turns out I love it!

The one thing I think would have made it better is if the inlays were recessed JUST A LITTLE BIT more into the handle so they didn't stick out so much. I like the thinness of the plain Jane.
