The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

So I decided to touch up my esee 4 on some old 2000 grit paper, and I ended up with by far the best polished edge I've ever done. It figures the one time I'm not trying to get it and it happens. I wasn't able to get rid of all the scratch marks, but progress not perfection I suppose.

Looks great man! I love sharpening with sandpaper. It's super easy and gets great results. Plus, touch ups are a breeze!

If you had a sharper edge part way through and when you got done it wasn't as sharp, you may have been feeling a bit of a burr or wire edge. On the other hand, you may have felt the edge (when it felt sharper) BEFORE it developed a wire edge, and now it has one? That could be the case. Try stropping it more and see what happens. It sure won't make it duller.

All that said, I wouldn't obsess over it. Just try again next time it needs it. Otherwise, you risk taking years of usage worth of steel off of your blade chasing "perfect sharpness".

Of course, of course. Manufacturing efficiency and whatnot

And they're growing on me anyway. I kinda like the width now:)

They also make the knife have a different sound when you open it. Less click and more clack:D

I'm glad to see you're digging lil wood stabby more now! Click is cool, but clack is cooler.

Yeah, it was all about getting over some invisible line. I was just about to give up on freehand and buy a sharpmaker or something, and then it clicked. The same has happened with the polishing. Practice makes perfect I suppose. Now if only I would've just followed everybody's warning and practiced on beaters. God only knows how much steel I've wasted getting to the point that I'm at today.

Meh, water under the bridge. It doesn't look excessive to me. Plus now you have a great edge you can get great use out of, and improve upon as time goes by.

Oh I'm referring to all my knives, the sebenza particularly. To be honest though I have enough steel to last me my entire life WITH ocd sharpening. Looking at pictures of those old slip joints that have been sharpened down to toothpicks really puts it into perspective.

Indeed! That makes me HOPE that those toothpick knives were used for years and years to get that way though, and they probably were.

Just don't take it too seriously brother, and sharpen when you know you really need to, touch up in between, and try to improve every time you sharpen and you'll be fine.

For now, I gotta hit the hay. Night y'all

I have a question about trading forum etiquette. I posted a knife for trade and have an offer I'm interested in. What's the normal protocol? Do we both ship same day or does the responder ship first? I'm sure it's a silly question but in my years of online transactions I've only bought and sold, never traded.

Every time I've done a trade I've just made sure the trade is with what I would consider "a stand up guy" (do research, high post count, good rep, good feedback, etc. count), then agree to cross-ship. Take packages to post office and send tracking numbers the same day. Agreements should be made and any questions asked up front until you are both comfortable with the deal. I haven't been burned on here yet, nor have I burned anyone.

And boooooo on anyone who's ever burned anyone on here.

As per Krissig12's suggestion, I'm going to be doing a giveaway for 1000+ posts here on Blade Forums. I will be buying a new knife, anodizing it, and then giving it away here in this thread.

From someone who has been ripped off on a trade here... I think the person who has the lower feedback score should have to ship first. Once the knife has been received and all is well, then the second party ships his knife. I made a lot of mistakes on my trade, one of them being that I believed him when he said he would ship it the same day. I would also make sure the person has some good feedback first. My two cents...

I can't wait to see what it is!!! Knowing your skill with anodizing I am sure it will be sweeeeeeet!

You're too kind Erik, I appreciate your words. Having said that, I've been trying to up my anodizing game, so this GAW knife should be a great way for me to do so. I will keep you all posted.

Hey my peer pressure worked! :p:D

Awesome that you're doing a GAW. Sounds like it'll be a great one. Welcome to the 1000+ club, and hope you're here for many more posts:thumbup:

I've been out of town for the past few days, so I haven't had much time to get on here. We took a trip up to a friends cabin in the wrightwood area and were lucky enough to get a good few inches of snow just before we arrived. I took lil stabby and the ESEE 4, but never got any good pics. The first morning was BEAUTIFUL. Fresh powder and 27 degrees with the sun shining:thumbup:

I also found an "ice stabby".......I think it's a tanto:D

This was a few days in, after everything was starting to melt

Yep. I've only done one trade on here, but this is essentially how I went about it. Luckily, it was with Fetzer who I already knew was a standup guy. But you can never be to careful when you're sending your knife out.

Gotsta do ya research!

Very cool, I can't wait and congrats!

Thanks guys.

Just ordered a Spyderco Sage 2 for this giveaway. Should be here sometime this week, and anodized by the weekend.

So this evening I discovered my icemaker was frozen up. I took the cover off -- big, big block of ice stuck in there. No way I could pull it out with my hands. Then I thought, I've got the perfect tool for this. My Barrage has a nice, sturdy drop point perfect for breaking that stuff up. I wailed away and busted the stuff out of there. A kitchen knife wouldn't have worked (ours or cheap). A thinner blade wouldn't have been a good idea, I had to hit it pretty hard. A bigger blade could have glanced off and poked a hole in something.

My wife has asked me lately why I have these knives around. I informed her that the knife she thinks is creepy just busted all that ice out of the freezer and fixed her ice maker.

I had no idea I would use a knife so much until I started toting the Barrage and Mini-Barrage. I'm using the crap out of them.

You're giving away a Sage 2? Awesome, I kinda miss mine.

And I can't wait to see what you do with the Ti slabs:thumbup:

So I ordered a Carbon Fiber Skyline on Wednesday. I gotta say, I missed the excitement of making an impulse buy online and having to wait a few days for it to arrive.

The last purchase I made was a Kershaw Leek back in the summer. It was at Walmart, I went to get a feel for a Skyline but instead found myself flicking open a black wash leek. After that I had to have it and I bought it on the spot. That soothed my addiction for a few months but my urge came back.

So I should have a Skyline in my mailbox by Monday and a deep carry pocket clip for it by next week.

I have succumbed to my weakness yet again... And it feels good.
