The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

Lol. I wonder if I should stonewash the finish...It'd probably look better clean and color separated the way I suggested originally, I'm not familiar with Spyderco's blasted finishes. Is the Sage 2 bead or sand blasted?

I'm pretty sure it's bead blasted because the one I had was nothing like the sand blasting on lil stabby

I emailed the guy back to ask if he could make a four inch version and if he'd be willing to use CF for the handle scales instead of stag.

Unfortunately, since he's in Croatia he's 9 hours ahead, so he probably won't respond to me before tomorrow. My last email from him came at 3 in the morning PST. Being an idiot, I initially assumed it was just because he was very dedicated to customer service:D

Alright he emailed back.

He's willing to make the 4 inch version and use CF for the scales (for an increased cost)

Not sure how much more though, I'm finalizing the order and waiting for him to give me a total.

Is your Dad gonna like carbon fiber? Or would HE like stag or something like that better?

Keep in mind whose knife you're building. I get excited doing stuff like that and end up ordering exactly what I wanted... Then the dude I give it to is like "eh, I like it, but..."

No no, this is for him. Im trying to get it done in CF because I know he'll be "meh" on the stag, meanwhile he loves CF. He's not much into traditional knives and natural materials.

We're very alike when it comes to knife taste:)

Excellent! Good lookin out man!

If he's into CF, I think he'll love it. And you should probably go with kydex too, since he's into more modern designs.

I sure hope MY kids read this thread!.......

I think Ive decided to go with leather. The kydex version doesn't look nearly as good as I thought it would. Looks very generic and plain.

And my dad generally likes leather, so I think he'll love the sheath this way. Especially since it will have "made in Croatia" stamped on the back:thumbup:

Which I don't believe the kydex would.....

I think you made the right call as well (on the leather), since the kydex was plain jane.

I love modern materials as well, and I'm still a sucker for a well made leather sheath!

Ahhhh, I used to have the full lineup of Busse e-handles with leather sheaths made by Kenny Rowe... Ask me how much I miss em - I dare ya! ;)

Nice, modern knives, nice leather sheaths. They go great together.

I really look forward to seeing the finished product. I think you made the right call with leather though.

I'll keep this thread updated for sure. The wait time is only 2-3 weeks, so it shouldn't be too long before I get to show off the finished product. If it comes out anything like I'm picturing it in my mind, it should be one sweet blade:thumbup:

Oh and I changed the thickness to 5mm because I feel itll go better with the longer blade, and give him some harder use capabilities should he need it. My esee 4 and master Hunter are both 3/16, which is pretty similar to 5mm, and both are 4 inch camp knives.

Unfortunately I might not have it in time for March 16 (his birthday), but I guess it doesn't really matter if he gets it RIGHT on his birthday. Being older means he's used to only getting a bunch of superficial gifts anyway, so anything as special as this could come months later and still make him super happy:)

In other news......

My dads birthday will be coming up soon, so Id like to get him something nice. I was thinking a good fixed blade camp knife that he could take on camping trips and hikes and whatnot. He doesn't really have any at the moment, but carries his mini grip that I got him daily. I think it would be cool to get him a nice fixed blade to compete the set.

And what better than this guy?

You see, my dads side of the family is from Croatia. Wouldn't it be downright awesome to give him something from a maker based in Croatia? I hear the knives are pretty damn good too.

Wait time is only a couple of weeks, which means it should arrive in time for his birthday.

I can choose either n690 or D2 for the steel, either 3mm or 5mm for the blade stock, and the sheath can either be kydex or leather (the kydex coming out to $140 total and the leather $160)

I figure I'll go with the n690 because of the rust resistance. Maybe not the best edge retention, but good enough for his uses. And I think 3mm thickness should be fine. IMO 5 would be kinda rediculous on a 3 inch blade. Kydex is cheaper and my preferred material for the sheath, so that's kind of a no brainer. Although coming from the standpoint of this being a gift, the leather might add a little bit of extra awesomeness.....

The one thing that's really bugging me is the size........... If it were 4 or even 5 inches, I think it would be a lot better for his purposes. He doesn't really need an Edc (he can't Edc a fixed blade here anyway). So in the role of dedicated camp knife, do you think 3 inches is enough? As it stands right now, I'm not sure if the maker would be willing to "size it up" for me.

What do y'all think?

Ancestral nod in a gift from one of his kids? As a father, that sounds like a grand slam. Well done, sir.

Thanks man.

He has a pretty deep connection to the place. I've never personally been there, but I know how much it means to him. He had to uproot and move to Canada with his family when he was just 6, but he frequently went back once he got older and always kept close ties to the people there.

I think it would really bring a smile to his face owning a custom by a guy named Dario of DARAC STEEL with a sheath stamped "made in croatia" :)

So I've been talking to Dario and were trying to work out a way to get my dads name put on the knife. Right now I'm thinking either engraved on the blade or milled into the scales somewhere.

He's sketching out the basic design so I guess we'll just go from there

I'm loving this stuff:thumbup:

Very cool! If it gets much nicer he might not want to carry it.

Haha! I was thinking the same thing

Ah well.

He won't be carrying it anyway since we can't carry fixed blades around here. But he'll be using it for hikes and camping trips and such. I'll insist on it:D

The rest of the time he can keep it in his safe if he likes;)

You're probably hoping he hates it and forgets all about it...so you can swoop in and claim it as your own. Excaliburrrrr!!!!!!!

Fo sho AntDog! This things gonna be sweet:thumbup::D

The price tags gone up to 250, but if I like it enough I might grab a matching one for myself a little later
