The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

In other news......

My dads birthday will be coming up soon, so Id like to get him something nice. I was thinking a good fixed blade camp knife that he could take on camping trips and hikes and whatnot. He doesn't really have any at the moment, but carries his mini grip that I got him daily. I think it would be cool to get him a nice fixed blade to compete the set.

And what better than this guy?

You see, my dads side of the family is from Croatia. Wouldn't it be downright awesome to give him something from a maker based in Croatia? I hear the knives are pretty damn good too.

Wait time is only a couple of weeks, which means it should arrive in time for his birthday.

I can choose either n690 or D2 for the steel, either 3mm or 5mm for the blade stock, and the sheath can either be kydex or leather (the kydex coming out to $140 total and the leather $160)

I figure I'll go with the n690 because of the rust resistance. Maybe not the best edge retention, but good enough for his uses. And I think 3mm thickness should be fine. IMO 5 would be kinda rediculous on a 3 inch blade. Kydex is cheaper and my preferred material for the sheath, so that's kind of a no brainer. Although coming from the standpoint of this being a gift, the leather might add a little bit of extra awesomeness.....

The one thing that's really bugging me is the size........... If it were 4 or even 5 inches, I think it would be a lot better for his purposes. He doesn't really need an Edc (he can't Edc a fixed blade here anyway). So in the role of dedicated camp knife, do you think 3 inches is enough? As it stands right now, I'm not sure if the maker would be willing to "size it up" for me.

What do y'all think?

I'm thinking blue edges and lockbar, and a deep brown earth tone for the flats. Sounds funny right now, but it should look pretty decent.

Interesting. I'll be curious to see what that looks like. You been anodizing much? Haven't seen any work lately.

Nah, I haven't been. Been way too busy with work and going back to school. I'm doing a clip for some guy this week but I've been turning down ano jobs for a while.

I would definitely see if you could bump it up to 4" and I would go for leather. Kydex is cool and all for a variety of carry options, but leather would be my preference if I'll be carrying it in one position. Plus leather looks soooooo much better while kydex gives off a sort of tactical vibe. Not to mention leather and stag go together like, well you get my drift.
Just my opinion on the matter, but in the end you know him best.

I'm in agreement with this pretty much 100%. But if it will only be used as a camp knife, and not an EDC, I'd bump it up to 5". Maybe even 6, depending on what he needs in a camp knife. When I personally think "camp knife", I think something that can split wood, slice up food, maybe butcher small to medium game. 3" might come up a little short.

And I agree completely with Sadsappysucker on this part: if you're going natural material for the handle, I'd go leather for the sheath. It's worth the extra twenty bucks!

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I'll go ahead ask him if he can do a 4 incher. He probably won't be able to (at least not without a significant price hike), but it's worth a shot.

And I think you're right about the leather too. If I'm getting stag, I should probably also do the sheath in a natural material. Then again, I might also try asking for a different handle material. In which case the kydex would work better
