The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

Hey if you're there Harris, I've got a quick question for ya.

Does the 21 have a ceramic ball detent? Or is that just the 25?
I believe they all use ceramic detents. It's only the 25 and umnum that incorporates it into the lock face.

Well that sucks!

Eh, I was on the fence anyways. I ended up using this opportunity to grab a new traditional. I've tried to get into them before with a case stockman, but it just wouldn't stick. This time I picked up a northwoods presidential. Hopefully I'll actually carry this one.

Ah, ok. So THATS what they meant. Thanks bro.

Good luck with the traditional! I know I could never bring myself to carry one....

SadSappySucker is correct. You guys probably won't see me for a while. I'm either switching careers or starting a separate business while keeping my current one.

Good luck man! Let us know how it goes.

Good luck Harris!

Damn, I just checked tracking and it says my 0450 is still in pre-shipment. I'm wondering if they may not actually have the knife in stock yet......

It said something like "7 left in stock" when I bought mine, but who knows?

Resolved! It shipped today and it'll be here Saturday. Woo!

In other news, I'm finally getting my wisdom teeth yanked out tomorrow. Ugh, I just KNOW it's gonna suck.

8:00AM too. Feels a little like "Wake up early so we can charge you for pain!" :grumpy:

I got my wisdom teeth yanked long ago. I think I was 22. I didn't feel sh!t. In fact, if you feel anything, they're doing it wrong. They gave me a Valium to take beforehand. As soon as I got there, they shot my gums full of novocaine and put a nitrous mask on me. I had my discman with me, and I put on some Black Sabbath. Listening to "planet caravan" and "Laguna sunrise"...
When the dentist came in I could "see" through the towel on my face. I was having an out of body experience where I flew up out of the chair, through the ceiling, kept going flying off the roof and along the bottom of the clouds.
Once in a while I'd hear the dentist, but it was very distant. He worked for literally 1 minute and said "the first one's out". The next 3 were much the same. The last one he had "a much tougher time with". That one took a full 4 minutes.
After that, he stitched the holes, told me what to do and what not to do (they had to almost wake me up - I was stoned), etc.
When I walked out I told my Dad "man, that nitrous is the best thing EVER. They should bottle that stuff!" Then we went home. The hardest part was that the dentist told me I couldn't smoke or drink from a straw (to avoid dry socket). The straw part I had no problem with - straws are for pu$$ies. The not smoking part sucked. I still did it, but only had 2 a day and tried not to suck very hard.
You should have no problem with it. If you do, tell the dentist immediately "I feel pain, you need to give me something. I'm hurting". They'll fix you right up. Good luck youngun, and don't worry.

Thanks man. That's quite the story!

I'm supposed to be put under during the operation via an IV and some heavy anesthetic, plus the local shots in my gums. So I shouldnt be in any pain until later on when the stuff wears off. Procedure shouldn't take more than 15 minutes.

Still nervous though. I hate IVs and needles in general.

No problem, and I feel ya on the needles thing. I can't stand needles. I'm terrified of em. The only two bigtime fears I have in this world (seriously) are needles and sharks. Guess which one I'm more likely to encounter...
Anyhow, if you can get over the initial stick, you shouldn't feel a thing at all. You'll just wake up and notice your wisdom teeth aren't bugging you anymore.
I had hell with mine for years before I got em yanked. They'd surface and push through (causing me a LOT of pain), then they'd go back down into my gums. Up and down, up and down, driving me nuts! Once you finally get em out they won't bug you anymore.
Best of luck to you, and don't sweat it too much. Especially if you're gonna be knocked out... Brother you won't feel a thing. A word of advice - drink some OJ before you go if at all possible. It's rule #1 for "needle freakout". Helps with tattoos too. Have whoever's driving you there stop and let you get a bottle. Trust me on this, it's worth it. Take an MP3 player or your phone and some earbuds. Listen to something relaxing while they stick ya. You should be aight.
So, what knife will you be carrying for one of the dental assistants to walk off with?! Lol

Awh man, I feel your pain(literally). Mine have been bugging the crap out of me for a few years now. Like Antdog described, up down up down. I'm actually just getting over about a week of em trying to push their way through. Finally they are starting to recede, but I'm starting to wonder how many more times of this I will be able to take.
My advice, take those legal drugs and enjoy the hell out of em while they last.
That's one of my biggest fears. I'm scared to mess with the pain pills. I sure did love me some roxy 30's though(maybe a little too much).

Today it'll just be a delica IWB. Hopefully they don't take it, but I'd rather it be that then one of my stabbies.

Wouldn't want to interrupt the procedure subconsciously assaulting the assistant while I'm under... There ain't no drugs in the world that would keep me from feeling that tugging on my waistband:D

Just got back. Everything went fine.

Little loopy from the drugs, but otherwise I'm feeling great.

No pain yet, but I know itll all start once the locals wear off

They prescribed me an antibiotic, motrin, and Percocet for if the pain gets REALLY bad.

Felt so damn weird coming to after they took me off the IV.

Great! Glad it went ok. Take those pain meds if you need to. Don't try to "tough it out" and suffer for no reason. Still got your Delica?

Yup, it's still with me.

Got a bit of a scare though, when the assistant asked me to lift my shirt so she could put on the heart monitors. Luckily I was already in the chair and my 4 o'clock IWB wasn't noticed

Hey so at least this day has a silver lining. The custom just arrived:thumbup:

No need for more pics, you've seen plenty already. But I will say that I'm a little disappointed. It's damn thick, and came with a uselessly obtuse edge angle. I tried doing some light woodworking to test how well it cuts, and it would pretty much just glance off the surface without taking any material off.......

So I figured I could give it a better edge and it would work better, but unfortunately the original edge angle was SO DAMN obtuse, that even after half an hour with diamonds, I still didn't have a new and thinner bevel. Oh well:rolleyes:

Rather than ruin the knife trying to fix it myself, I think I might send it in to someone to have professionally reprofiled (or even reground to a thinner stock). But I'll only do it if I decide to wait until Father's Day to give it to him. Otherwise, I'll give it to him on Sunday and just assume that he wont care because he won't use it much for woodworking anyway.

Well, how would you ruin the knife? You know how to reprofile an edge without whittling the blade down to nothing right? Just lower the angle you hold and and get to it mang! I know you don't want to mess it up, but it might mean more to your Dad if you set that bevel yourself.
If I were you, I'd just grind away on my Sharpmaker til it was sharp and leave it alone. I wouldn't worry about the thickness of the blade (your Dad probably won't either).

I've got some pretty serious impatience issues, mang.

I wish I had some lower grit sandpaper so I could give it a nice convex. All I've got is 1000 grit, which isn't working fast enough for my liking

Get ye to yon hardware store! And hey, I know how it is when you're 18. You want it, and you want it right NOW! I was the same way too. Just try to fight that urge and take your time. I think some SiC sandpaper would work great.
Maybe just throw it on a mousepad or a thick phone book and strop it. Convex edges have many advantages. Super tough, super sharp, easy to maintain. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

I might still convex it in the future if I decide to give it to him at a later date. But for now, I just went back to the stones and gave it a decent (albeit semi-convex and sloppy) edge. Nowhere near as perfect or as thin as I'd like to go, but whatever. It's still light years ahead of the one it came with.

Well I suppose a FEW pics are in order......;)

The CF never shows up right in pictures, but I can assure you it's beautiful. Still love the red liners:thumbup:
