The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

Wow! Looks great man! And I'm sure your Dad will love it. The edge looks fine from that pic. A little thick, but still ok. Maybe you should just give it to him and see if he likes it as is. If not, then tinker with it.
That knife is beautiful, no doubt.

Thanks man. I think I'll give it to him this Sunday.

Easter presents?.....should definitely be a thing:D

It is a thing for my kids. The Easter bunny was very kind to them this year! How can I deny a face like this?

Good lord, she's 3 years old and she looks 14 to me in that picture. My bud at work said "daddy's gonna have problems"... I said "no, her boyfriends are gonna have problems."
Knife content - my family is going to a campout mañana. I'm sure a few pics will be taken, and shared. I'm thinking the Ratmandu will get another workout. Plus my wife told me our tree out front needs cut back... Muahahaha!!!! Perfect excuse to bust out "ol swordy"!

Sheesh, you reminded me I still haven't gotten around to grabbing one of those things!

Damn nice Swordy:thumbup:

You know the worst part of this whole wisdom teeth situation? I'm freaking starving!

I can't eat solid food for a while, and I aint into to juicing so I've spent the day in hunger. Sucks!:grumpy:

Not to mention the pain isn't letting up. Im not touching the Oxys he gave me though. No thank you, I'd rather live through a bit of pain than a life time of pill addiction.

May seem extreme, but with an addictive personality like mine, who knows? Notice a lot of serious knife guys have had OTHER obsessions (wink wink) in the past? Yeah....

Hey, I hear ya on the fear of addiction. It's always a possibility, but if you're in pain, take a pill. Taking the prescribed dosage isn't going to make you "trip out" or become a pill head. It'll just dull the pain. If you're seriously worried about stuff like that, just take what you need and flush the rest. Don't suffer needlessly.
And dude, it's ok to eat. Just don't chew with the bloody tatters! Front of mouth only.
If you're ever in the market for a super cool bushwhacker I'd highly recommend that Rodent Rucki - they sure are a lot of fun!

Take the damn pills when you need to! There is no harm in taking medication as prescribed by a doctor. Hell, I know quite a few addicts/ alcoholics who have been sober a while but still take narcotics as prescribed on a regular basis. And I definitely wouldn't avoid them(alcohol, or anything else for that matter) because you are in fear you might get addicted. Don't let the mistakes of a few ruin a lifetime of experiences for you.
On a lighter note, I just found out I don't have school today, so now I get to start working on my esee 4. I plan on rehandling it with some blackwood and pins instead of screws. I've never tried pinned handles before, but I much prefer their looks over the standard screws. Should be fun.

Sounds great Sappy! Can't wait to see the finished product.

As for the pills, I would probably take them if the pain got REALLY bad, but right now it's pretty much just a dull ache. I can handle that.

Well both actually. I was afraid that I wouldn't end up with a tight fit from just peening(since it's my first go at peening I didn't know what to expect), so I went ahead and epoxied them together with the pins running wild. I'll come back later and file the pins down and peen them. The pins are mainly for aesthetics. but if all goes well I'll probably skip the epoxy next time.

This by far the hardest wood I have ever touched. It took me 2 hours to sand what took me maybe 30min on the cocobola. I'm curious to see how hard it will be to clean up the little bit of stray epoxy that seeped out.

Waiting for the mailman to drop off my 0450. Pretty excited

Having something to flip will make this crap a whole lot more bearable

Sweeeeeeeet:thumbup:

There's no way it's replacin my stabbies, but this thing is really freaking cool. Theres a certain trick to opening it though (it prefers lightswitching over push-buttoning), and with the super strong detent you have to be extra careful where you put your middle finger. I figured out that when its on the pivot I can open the knife just fine, but when it's anywhere on the lock bar it's a no go.

Yep, ironwood is HARD stuff. It's tough to cut, very resistant to sanding. The epoxy will be no problem at all. It will sand right off with sandpaper. And since you epoxied it, no need to peen the pins unless you just want to. When I epoxy a handle on I just chop the pins off and shape the whole handle (including the pins) on a belt sander.

Yeah, I've tried (my crappy) files, 80 grit paper, a coping saw and whittling, and I've barely removed any material. I'm done trying to do it all by hand. I plan on breaking out the angle grinder and doing all the rough stuff with that tomorrow. And I don't think I'll worry about peening.
I have got to get a cheap belt sander. All this hand working is just too damn time consuming. I mean the cocobola went pretty smoothly, but even it took well over 8 hours to sand down. This blackwood takes the word hard wood to a whole nother level.

Yes, if you're going to be doing stuff like this on a regular basis a belt sander would be a great investment. I never thought I'd use mine for anything other than working on knives, but I use it a lot more than I thought I would. Mine has a belt and also a disk sander (I think it's around 5" diameter). It was not very much and I absolutely love mine. Got it at Sears.

I got that thing too and it is perfect for woods. Not too fast either. Buy a couple packs of low grit belts. Let the machine do the work so you don't burn the wood.

You can even make simple small knives with it, just takes a long time.

Nice 0450, man! These newer ZTs definitely require an adjustment of technique, but they flip like crazy!

Yup, the blade just rockets out of the handle. And it's smoothing out nicely too:thumbup:

Solid, no play, but still free-falling, no cosmetic issues..... Loving the quality of these new ZTs
