The Last Blade You'd Ever See Me Carry Is A.....

Oh i have a feeling that i'm going to regret this, however, here we go ... The Last Blade You'd Ever See Me Carry Is A..... a folder. Function is the purpose of a tool. A (fixed blade) knife is one of man's earliest tools (and was probably inspired either by the lack of good toothpicks or bad teeth) and like most old forms and designs, they function splendidly. As a corollary point, most great designs adhere to the KISS rule - and folder designs certainly do not. One posting mentioned 'folder' and 'combat' in the same sentence - scary! A folder is at best a second-rate substitute for a real knife. All the fuss over design, complexity, blade deployment, etc., sounds like something one would expect from drugstore cowboys, not people who need and use knives as real tools. Compared to fixed blade specimens, folders are weak and clumsy to deploy - i never carried such a liability in the field. Having said all that, i did have a cute folder once, when i was a child, but then i grew up...

okay, roll out the artillery!

Some carry folders because we don't have a choice for various reasons. :)

I love fixed blades too, but I don't think I would have put it quite that way. ;)

Really? The only time I would consider carrying a fixed blade is if I were camping. I can't think of a single day-to-day task that I couldn't preform just as easily with a folder, and a folder carries much easier in a pocket. Also, in my opinion there's not as much design, ingenuity, and style in a fixed blade as there is in an average folder.

Let's hear it.....mine would be the Opinel.....Just doesn't do much for me at all...

Busse Nuclear Meltdown Fusion Battle Mistress.

Weight, wut? :p

I don't have a problem with what you said. What I do have a problem with is the way in which you said it. You live in rural Ontario where it may be fine to carry a fixed blade strapped to your leg, but where I live in NY I can't carry a fixed blade with me wherever I go. You know that you said what you said in an effed up way which is why you're ready for folks to "roll out the artillery". As far as I'm concerned you're a Troll and you're trying to stir a pot that you created. I like fixed blades too and I would love to be able to carry one at all times, but I don't live in a rural area so I can't. That makes me some kind of
"drugstore cowboy who has no use for a knife as a real tool" in your book? You can have that opinion if you like, but I'd just like to let you know that your opinion is flat out wrong. You could have said what you tried to say in an intelligible way without intentionally trying to offend people, but you wanted to be a Troll. I think you still have some growing up to do. :thumbdn:

P.S. Anyone that starts off a post with "I know I'm going to regret this", "I have a feeling people aren't going to like this", or "I'm probably going to get flamed for this" probably shouldn't post it or is a Troll, plain and simple.

I agree with the last couple posters. Sure, obviously a well made fixed blade is sort of "fail proof" but modern folders are a very good substitute for what most people need a knife for. I have taken my "cheap" spyderco tenacious as my main camping knife, with its liner lock which many knife snobs consider to be weak, and I abused the hell out of it. I cut completely through a few ankle thick saplings, did some general wittling and wood carving, prepared food, and even dug with it, stabbed open some tin cans of food, etc... Other than the edge dulling rather quickly, it didn't hiccup for any of these tasks, and I'm not sure how a fixed blade of the same size and design would have been able to perform any better, except for cleaning it out when you're done.

I love the blade show! Haha I always talk to my friend about knives he thinks he's a sportsman but he's just a wannabe city boy. He tells me there's good stuff on there I just laugh at him.

Thank you gentlemen for the polite working-over: deserved it was and the restraint exercised subtlety emphasized the inappropriateness of the original remarks. Coming off the Survivalist Forum was not the proper way to approach this Forum! It is quickly becoming apparent that there is a substantial difference in tone and style between the two and nos that 'i've been told', the lesson will be put to good use.

Though i am out in the boonies (but not 'north of 7' as the local observation goes) i do not carry openly. My EDC is a post-war horse-headed Ostrobothnian puukko with a 3 3/4" blade. It sits very deep in the sheath - which itself is quite plain - so it is not as noticeable as a standard hunter or such. To avoid pointless attention, it is usually clipped inside my vest with the sheath in the upper left pocket. This way it is very handy yet all but invisible. Rather than carry a folder, i substituted a Cold Steel Bird & Trout, carried in a front chest pocket with the loop handle exposed. As accurately noted in some of the comments, small fellows like these and their folder cousins can handle just about any day-to-day task.

So, can anyone recommend what to look for in a good folder - as is apparent, i know squat about these fine tools!

That could be a useful thread in it's own. Considering that the Romans made and carried folders there have been many designs, for many purposes over the centuries, particularly the last century.

This particular thread began as an unserious/for fun topic, got away from that some.

Plaza Cutlery will hook you up with this hot pink Strider and some gold bling too! ;)

Y'know, I think I actually like the look of a Strider with a pink scale. I'll pass on the "bling" though...too "manly" for that. :D

But on-topic, the last knife you'd ever see me carry would be anything made by Taylor Cutlery or its subsidiaries (Schrade, Smith & Wesson, etc.). Absolute garbage relying on fairly well-known names to sell cheap, mass-produced heaping piles.

Bill, everybody has a price. Are you sure your masculinity isn't for sale?
:D

You're being bent over and taking it up the thing behind from everybody here... now, what's the definition for a man that does that?
;)
just kidding dude, it's all in good humour

:) heh I seriously don't care it's all in good fun I completely agree, I just said my piece and ignored whatever they said back...I'm right and I know it. Let's be honest I'm not exactly use to debating without being able to use ALL the words.....censorship sucks.

I just voice my opinion, if people are willing to argue with me because they are trying to convince themselves it's ok to wear pink......I disagree but hey do what you want....I just don't follow trends...it's a trend. I never do what's "In" "popular" "cool" I do what I do like it or not, I don't care. I'm not looking to impress people or "fit in".

Meh sell your masculinity and be less of a man....that's all you.....

Sorry I'm not stooping down....Pink shirts, are worn and used by women or men trying to act like them. Same with knives. YOU KNOW the manufactures made them for women.....YOU KNOW IT....do you see an XM-18 in pink NOPE, an SMF NOPE because they are knives made for MEN.

Dude I'm not a "drama queen" I'm just a man refusing to act like a woman. Apparently you like acting like a woman, sorry I don't. Again my masculinity isn't for sale.

I am not getting in the middle of this and I know it's not an SMF. But this is just funny to me.

I don't care what you guys say - I'm taking you back to the pink.

There's a way for guys to wear pink. Check Tom Cruise in Risky Business.

Bet the boy got loads of pink that year - as I'm sure some of you secured men out there get loads of pink for wearing pink.

What we don't wear is plaid.

Actually you do get a pink scale for the XM-18.

Not my picture and hope the original owner does not mind (if he does he can just send me a pm and I will remove it).

I really do not want to go in the whole pink debate but I dont mind buying one from Benchmade or Spyderco as a certain amount goes to breast cancer research. I really really dont mind that at all.

You know come to think about it, I don't think I've ever worn pink. I've always been more of an earthy tone guy, you know like puce, lilac, fuschsia and sometime I throw in a little coral number!

Lighten up guys! Remeber when getting one ear pierced was the most manly thing you could do? It will all be meaningless in 30 years anyway.

Back on topic - anything folding knife that you is worth more than a customer fixed blade - WHat's the point!?! (pun intended).
