The official Challenge knife thread!Makers please confirm your entry

1084 gets a bad rap from it's label as a beginner/simple steel. It is a high performance steel that just so happens to be a perfect eutectoid... which means even the most basic heat treat can achieve great results.... That truly is a super steel in my books.

That's sooo true. It's why I used 1084 when I finally broke down and made a hunting knife for myself.

Looks good daizee!

Here's mine!

that looks great. got my blank finished tonight. its .098 elmax with a MicroConvex (no idea what to call it but the radius on the convex is like 48 inches basically ffg). distal taper and the edge was ground to .010 pre heat treat

Here's my finished knife and sheath.
I've done this blade several times, but decided to dress this one up a bit with a fire steel and wooden sheath, but all in a "refined rough" style. The Red Oak for the handle and sheath has incredible figuring and color, but I decided to char it just a bit for a different look. The chatoyance still comes through even with the distressed finish.

The sheath was a PITA!!. Although it came out just fine in the end, I will not do a moose antler welt ever again. The sheath alone turned into a 20 hour job.

Anyway, here's the particulars and a few photos:

Ole' Timer

Blade: Hand forged 1095(Aldo), flat ground with 800 grit finish. Very sharp and pointy!!
Handle: Lightly charred figured Red Oak, wire brushed to reveal the wood grain and sanded to 800 grit with a buffed Tung oil finish, ebonized Pear liners, Moose antler bolsters, peened brass pins, and hidden lanyard loop. The moose hide lanyard has a charred Red Oak bead and two moose antler beads(keeping a natural face on one end of each).
Sheath: Charred figured Red Oak, with moose antler welt and collar, peened brass pins. 6/7 oz veg tanned leather harness with high-ride belt loop carry, or pack carry option using the rear center strap. The leather has a buffed Mink Oil finish. The fire steel has a charred Red Oak and Moose antler handle with ebonized Pear spacer.

Thanks for looking. Please offer up your comments and constructive criticism.

Beautiful knives guys, this should be fun!

Okay forget it..... I just threw mine in the trash..... Good luck guys:thumbup:

alright, you've twisted my arm I'll still participate and come out from the corner now... but seriously It's all about being able to participate I'm not all that worried if I come in last, I'm just thankful I still have the ability to be able to throw sparks from time to time, really looking forward to some feedback on this one as well... This is a really hard category for me to fill, 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 seems awkward for me to make.. But I've only done a handful of knives so maybe its time to step out a little :D

great, great entry's guys guess there's no turning back now.... :p

Oh man, this is really shaping up. Wish I could be there in person for it even though I'm so outta my league!

I finished my sheath this afternoon so I will post the pre-sharpening pictures. It is .095" CPM M4, the blade came out 5.56" tip to scales, heat treat by me to a 64-65 Rc.

Good lookin knife BC. We still need to get together pre gathering since we are so close. Really stoked to hang out with ya this May!

0.095" steel - that knife will rock at food prep Chris.
Slicing dicing machine......

Thanks Bruce. I really like the thin stock but it can be a pain to work. This is the third knife I made for the challenge. The first one broke while straightening, I was not pleased with the grind on the second, and so I ground this one after HT.
