Beads and such are available from lots of sources. I've gotten quite a few off the Big River Site as well as the Big Auction Site. Many knife brands have their own beads and those and others are available through online knife dealers. The hardware store is a great source for "found objects" --I've put together "beads" from the lamp parts drawers and the plumbing drawers are good sources too. Craft stores have lots of stuff to dig through, too.
Here's my blacked-out Manix2 with a black 550 tail featuring two extended crown-and-diamond knots and a ti spyder sourced from China through Flea Bay.
As to your other inquiry, there are lots of suppliers for custom or aftermarket scales, especially for Griptilians. You can search here at BF for members that provide such as well as Googling online for same.
I picked up the red G10 Benchmade Proper last week to go with my green Micarta scaled version. I tied up a a single false Turk's head knot with contrasting paracord on the new knife to echo the one on my other.
Saw these and for whatever reason liked the idea of an "official" CRK lanayrd
Good excuse to break it down for a cleaning too since it comes with a new lanyard pin
Not to get technical or pedantic but, in my opinion, if it cant be looped around your fingers or your wrist for retention, it's probably a fob rather than a lanyard but whatever, I don't care what we call them for the purposes of this thread. Here are the things tied to my knives. I consider the ones on the left lanyards and the ones on the right fobs. The top knot on the leather lanyards can be untied relatively easy by bending the knot to loosen it, the additional length allows them to loop around my thumb and then my wrist for a firm hand hold. The Orange and black one loops around two fingers. All the ones on the right just alert everyone that something inside my pocket has a thing hanging outside my pocket. The hardware on the PM2 is just there to reflect light if I drop it in the dark. I intend to polish them to a 220 grit satin because it will reflect a lot of light but I haven't gotten around to it.
I received this little swiss army knife from my grandmother over 20 years ago. She is no longer with us, but I found it in a drawer and thought it deserved a nice lanyard or FOB or whatever this is considered.
There's lots of choices for both knots and bead placement. I prefer my beads sandwiched amidst knots and started out with Snake Knots both sides. These are the simplest to tie and easiest to cinch up tight against the bead on the downhill side.
Here's my new Hinderer-designed Viper Storm with bead, three Snakes uphill and two down. The knife came with the HMBS lanyard loop that had a glass-breaker in it's end. I like the sandwiched loop extension on my MP1 and Shiros, but the glass-breaker on the Storm dug into my palm when opening. I got sick of that, took it out, tied up around the back post, and am much happier with it now.
I've also sandwiched beads between False Turks Heads (AKA Diamond Knots), Crown and Diamonds, Extended Crown and Diamonds, or combinations thereof. There are numerous examples of these going back through the thread.
This lanyard gives my ladybug full four finger purchase quite nicely. I’ve tied some sweet lanyards but this was the most practical by far. It doesn’t get carried, it’s an around the house knife. Paid like $12 bucks for it thanks to some insider info I found here on a lightening deal on Amazon a couple years ago
