The Official Lanyard Thread

I think the corners of the square cord are biting into itself and making it hard to tie a knot, those that I’ve seen with square cord were usually the hangman type style
if you are set on using leather there’s round cords that would tie into knots better

possibly if you wet the cord you have that might make it more pliable to tie?

Gary, thank you for the insight and information. I might have to brave the local craft stores today.
Thanks again

You do some really nice work with stag.
Hey, thank you for the compliment... I've always loved stag handled knives !
The Sambar stag rolls work out really nice for customizing the Opinel knives... the only tools you really need is a Dremel with a metal abrasive wheels (1" and 1.5" work best for me), and a one inch belt sander, like the one Harbor Freight sells... having the circular sanding disc attached is a plus for other projects.

I've done some custom Victorinox knives using Sambar stag slabs too... hardest part is getting them thin enough so they aren't too thick !
But I have picked up a few tricks along the way, like using double-sided carpet tape attached to a piece of wood chair rail and the stag slab to sand it on a 4" belt sander.
That learned after sanding the corners of my index and thumb nails trying to hold the slabs in place on the belt and circular sanders... HAH !

Attempting to learn some new knots after picking up a good bit of paracord from Atwood Rope's black Friday sale.
That's a really nice knot !
Anytime I need to make a fancy paracord lanyard, I have to refer to a saved YouTube video to get started again... I don't make them that often to remember how to do them !
Was there a video to show how to do that one with three different colors ?

I love the colors! My favorite thus far.

Just got this little Odin fellow in stainless steel and coated bronzish, the through hole is quite small so it was a struggle to get this heavier 700lb paracord through, 550 probably will work better but I didn't have this colour green in that weight, so I tried drilling/filing the hole just a little bit larger and was able to finally get the paracord through the bead, but it was a struggle to be sure! nice detail on the bead I thought.

Hi Gary... Do you remove the paracord's inner white threads ?
That's what I do to make them thinner and easier to work with... made this new one for my custom Opinel 10 knife...

I’ve done that before but it leaves a loose over feeling for the rest of the cord that I don’t like much , where smaller cord uses a smaller jacket but good work on that one you did!

You can remove one thread at a time until you get the feel you like.... not that I ever tried that... HAH ! :p
I have pretty much just used the standard size (550 ?) cord... didn't realize there were so many sizes !
I could probably use some different sizes... but I have way too much 550 cord in various colors now !

Oh yes, I've pulled single strands out before as well on some knives that have very very limited room for a lanyard and actually made it so JUST the area that wraps around the standoff doesn't have any cord in it, which is tricky to do, I made a small hook from a small paper clip end and dug out the inner core in just that area and pulled them up through the 'hole' I opened slightly and hooked each strand and snipped them one by one and pulled it back slightly so it would leave about an inch of empty outer shell. Which is not easy to do, lemme tell ya ;) but doing that work leaves the rest of the paracord full thickness in order to tie the knots, it just allows a thinner/narrower cord to wrap around the standoff so the blade doesn't hit it.

oh and as to the larger size, this 700 lb stuff makes a very nice wide diamond knot that your finger can easily hook onto when you to draw the knife, but that knot took me a long time to master and I still goof up once in a while and have to start over because one line or another got twisted and it didn't make the correct knot, always fun lol
