The "Official" T.M. Hunt Custom Knives Random Chat Thread

Couple of Blades I have Todd looking at making for me. I sketched them out after Todd got me geeking on designing some blades.

This big one the Thickness is in the air atm but either 1/4 or 3/16th depending on Todds feel.

This one was my idea for the Sister knife to the big chopper. Thinking 5/32nds on this one ?

Startin off page 31 with a double tap....... go to page 30! :-)

Todd, from the pictures i have seen of you it looks as if your facial hair is similar to how i keep mine, may i ask what type of respirator you use and if it has a good seal?

Im looking into the resp-o-rator, simply because i dont want to have to be clean shaven all the time, but im not sure id enjoy having to only breath through my mouth for several hours a day. The other option i looked at is the 3M 7500 series, but it seems hit or miss when it comes to a good seal with facial hair. The 3M site literally says not to be used by people with beards or other facial hair.

Just thought id ask you what works for you since it looks like we keep are facial hair about the same.

Thanks bud.

Wow bro that is really really awesome of you man. Thank you truly.

Im not normally a sensitive person but this means more than i can say and im touched. I didnt even consider a respirator before spending my money on tools like an idiot. If i can ever repay this favor please let me know.

Thank you so very much!

Empty the box it comes in, fill it with beer, and write "return to sender" on it.

I bet the box would be a wet mess before it left the state LMAO

I do have a plan to thank him for his generosity though. Just might take me a bit to make it happen!!

I wear a respirator like the one Murph is sending out to you WW. Fact is I've tried several and the bad news is there is no respirator that works great with facial hair. Some just better than others. The one your getting fit the tightest on my face anyway. Be sure to look up the info on the package and buy the correct replacement filters for it.
Also, I work in a small closed off room dedicated to grinding. Still, my shop gets filthy because of it. I grind with one fan to my back and another with a furnace filter blowing outside. Soapy water at the base of the grinder will help collect the metal dust but grinding handle material is a whole different ballgame. My system is far from perfect but you might wanna put some thought into how your gonna get all that crap out of your basement.

The cyclone dust collector kits work for handle material, but you have to be VERY careful about grinding the profile of the handle material/tang area because sparks and plastic dust collectors full of flammable dust can go pear shaped very quickly. I just take mine offline for the profiling and run it for shaping scales.

Thanks for the info Todd.

As of right now my plan to at least help with the dust down there is probably far from great but i plan to use a couple box fan with filters attached to the back to help collect some of that dust and blow fumes away. I will also get a shop vac as money allows to help clean everything up and try and make a point of using it every day when im done grinding for the day.

Where/how do you use the soapy water at the base of the grinder? I will also incorporate this practice as well. Anything that helps that wont cost me a fortune im willing to try. I love knives and really want to give making them a try but my health is also very important.

Its probably not the best of plans, but for my budget and everything there is not a whole lot of options i can come up with.

I will only be living here another year and a half or so before moving back to Florida, and at that point ill will be working in a dedicated shop with large opening doors and that should help things quite a bit as far as air circulation goes. I may also be able to do some of the dirtier jobs and handle sanding outdoors. Which will probably be the best bet.

Hopefully for the year and a half im left here i can manage to work this out without spending an arm and a leg.

Thanks for the great info bud.

Im sure those cyclone dust collectors are a nice piece of equipment, but it also looks to cost more than double everything else im investing in this hobby combined. Im a disabled veteran on a pension and there is just no way i can afford to spend a grand plus on a dust collector. I would have to forego even attempting this hobby if thats the only option.

Hey WW, I just picked up a 3m 6900, it fits good but I gotta wear my contacts, glasses and full face mask not good...

So, first time commenter here at the T.M. Hunt sub.....I have on my tiny little grinding setup a sheet metal vacuum attachment that sits under the wheel of the belt part of my grinder, and the disc part has its own vacuum attachment. I've got a cleanstream filter (think Gore-Tex like) in a Shop-Vac that catches most of what's coming off the grinder. It would probably work even better if I took a little more time and fitted/remade it for better coverage/dust catching. Still works pretty well though. It's just some sheet metal aluminum flashing I cobbled together with some rivets.

Obviously needs to enclose the bottom wheel more and fit tighter so that it has more complete dust pickup. The one I made for my drill press, OTOH, seriously kicks ass. Sucks down everything.

Definitely want to dedicate your shop-vac to metal pickup if that's what you're spending the majority of your time doing, tho. Don't want to be sucking hot sparks into a big pile of sawdust....

That's pretty slick!

Thanks! I will eventually make a better one for the grinder. I've seen one (set up for woodworking though) that pretty much completely enclosed underneath the table and caught almost every particle of dust. But the table angle couldn't be adjusted, which I thought could be addressed with a better design. If I come up with one.

Jd, I seen the pictures of yours and it looks sweet man! When i first seen it i was a bit confused why you needed something like that... But i also thought a paper hospital mask was efficient then too LOL

Mike, that is VERY creative there!! Looks cool and efficient.

Saw dust + Hot sparks = bad thing ?

-Joke.

this one - 1/4" stock, strong distal taper, drop the point just a little, maybe do the spacers and the buttcap out of 1/8" thick brass or stainless to match the guard.

I need to try to get out this weekend some. They are calling for rain this evening and tomorrow then Saturday's high is only supposed to be 52. Are there any places nearby other than Brown co & Yellow Wood that might be good to escape to? I was thinking about heading down to Morgon Monroe forest to check it out.

Another thing you can do is glue a bunch magnets to the inside of a box, then put a plastic garbage bag in the box, and put the box under your band saw or drill press.

The magnets then keep any chips that fall down into the box corralled. Eliminates a LOT of sweeping. Not all, but a lot.

When you pull out the plastic bag, the magnets are "cleaned" and you put a new bag in.

I'm still experimenting on my grinder. The hot sparks melt the plastic bag and will set a cereal box to smoldering when one is used to "line" the bottom of the plastic bag to try to prevent melting.
