I can never seem to get sunny pictures of snowscapes. For a very brief moment today, the clouds parted and I thought I might get some brighter shots, but it was not to be. Generally, since these ridges face south, as soon as the sun comes out the snow melts. There is a very narrow window of opportunity to get pictures that don't look grey and depressing. Even under clouds, though, this area is wild and beautiful, and it's right outside my door.

...It is a northstar, right?

Thanks. The kukri is a cold steel beater and the knife is an Aurora. I prefer the larger size for my hands.

And here is a mini picture review I did for another site.

Here is a mini picture review of the Aurora for you guys. I meant to put it up Friday, but I ended up at a friends place all weekend.

Here it is as it rides on my belt with the drop loop. This allows it to clear my backpack when I hike to camp (my backyard this time).

Now that we have gotten to camp we need to get settled. First order of business is to make a pot handle grabber.
First get a nice stick

Just strip off all the bark and then just notch it out. This is easily accomplished with the very sharp convex grind. I could also sharpen the other end and have a very nice stake to secure my shelter.

Of course now we need a fire to cook our stew on. Good thing I have a swedish firesteel right on the sheath. A pile of dry pine needles and a swift strike with the spine of the blade produces a nice fire.

Just add some wood and you are set for a great evening in camp.

Oh, my mistake. I just thought the Aurora had a complete convex grind.

...unless it does, and my eyes are failing me.

Great pics and review! That's a great looking little knife!!!

It does have a convex. I'm not sure what your seeing.

Both of you are about right... The convex is ALMOST full convex but (at least mine) is somewhat saber-convex. There seems to be about 1cm of unconvexed blade near the spine.

Wow what a great thread!

Here are a few shots of a 5 day backcountry canoe trip that I took with my wife and our dog in the interior of Algonquin PP Ontario, last summer (the kids were away at camp for a week).

Those are some classic Algonquin shots, The ORB - especially that second one with the misty lake.

I have many fond memories of paddling through Algonquin.

Thanks for sharing, and all the best,

- Mike

Thanks Mike. That second shot is my faveourite and was sunrise at our first campsite, on Moccasin Lake. The first shot is on Rain lake on our first morning and the third shot is on the Petawawa River headed towards Misty Lake.

It was our first time in Algonquin and it was a great trip. Planning to do two more trips this year (4 days in July and a week in September), just need to get my arse in gear and plan the routes. I'd love to do a cross Algonquin trip, but the portaging is a killer.

I have a bunch more pics but they are on my other PC at home. I'll have to see if there are any gratuitous knife shots to be found. :)

Cheers, Oliver.
