I would say that it is the end of a log, sunk in the bottom, fixed, and that our perspective, of the end of the log, conceals all those details from view.
I have seen logs like this, in lakes.

Backcountry riding in Colorado... sorry for the name on the last one... my friend took the pictures and likes to tag his name to the good ones. Bit annoying sometimes.
Obviously, the second and third photo aren't backcountry...
And yes, that last photo IS me. About a 22 foot cliff.

Did about 14 miles of hiking through Arches National Park on some primitive trails... excellent day.
Found a nice shady spot in a vertical fissure to stop and have a snack. That's my RC-4 on my hip, though hard to see.
I climbed up a short rock face to get a look around from the top of a sandstone fin... coming back down was a bit sketchy. That slickrock is angling away from my landing spot and towards a 30 foot crevasse. The only place I had a good foothold was from well above where I'm perched, and I eventually had to jump from it down to my pack. Probably about a 14-15 foot drop. Very sketchy indeed. The friend I had there taking pictures was nervous, but laughed it off by saying that if I had fallen and died at least he would have had it well documented!
