If you have a pistol carry permit in your state, here in the USA, you can carry it concealed in National Parks now ~;-)

I believe that law becomes effective February 21.

As one of the minority in California with a permit, I plan on fully exercising this right.

Just to clarify, IF you have a valid CPL for the state the National park is in, you may legally carry CONCEALED in that park. The park service still prohibits open carry by anyone other than their own LE community.

That is still state by state, I was with Alaskan residents who open carried even in town...if i'm not mistaken there are a few states that allow open carry in national parks due to wildlife threats (bears, cougars etc).

too bad if a ranger finds you carrying a knife you're in trouble :p

I trust you were joking Robert, but it seems some of the others here might not have realized.

We are not prohibited from carry a knife in Australia PROVIDED you have a genuine reason that satisfies the police etc. if questioned.

Out in the bush it doesnt really get any better. Hunting, Bushcraft, Food Prep...

Provided you are not threatening anyone or being a dick you will never get hassled in the bush for having a knife on your belt, in your pack etc.

Thanks for the kind words Gutshot, Riz and Dave!

Ive actually just returned from another little weekend trip to a familiar camp site, knives present on this trip; Shane Sibert original Particle Accelerator, Custom Shop Busse FFBM and an old Strider SMF.

I was only half joking, as I have been in trouble having a knife (buck 119) on my belt by a park ranger while fishing in a national park and took it off until they left then put it back on, they told me it was an inappropriate knife for fishing...you need to exercise caution since its on the ranger/police discretion with what outcome occurs, you're on public property and technically you can be in violation of public carry laws.

I now hang a bandana over my knife while going out bush to avoid issues.

Here's a shot of me with Dusty, our now 13 year old Shepherd/Lad mix. It looks like we're down in da bayou, but my wife took the picture in Kejimkujik National Park a couple summers ago.

Last week was very, very busy for me, and finally yesterday afternoon I had the opportunity to slip out for a few hours in the woods. This time of year is one of my least favorite seasons simply because everything is gray. Gray sky, gray snow, gray trees, gray half-rotted grass (if it's showing), gray ice on the lakes, gray every d*mn thing the eye can see.

It was still good to get out for a while though, and I was able to try my hand at a bit of carving and cordage making. I didn't get pictures of either of those, but I will post up the spoon as soon as it's more or less done. Used my Wetterlings 19", Mora #1 carbon, and my RC-3 throughout the afternoon. On to the scenery.

The location was a WMA northwest of Lincoln NE. It's a neat little spot. Usually pretty empty for most of the year, but during deer season it is very crowded. I did see plenty of signs of other people, which surprised me a bit. Never saw anybody else while I was out, though.

Followed a creek for a while. It starts at a fairly large spring, which I didn't bother to photograph today. There's a small, shallow pool just below the spring that reeks something terrible. There are almost always deer around the spring, although I didn't see any today. Probably scared them all off with my wild chopping with the Wetterlings.

Still trying to figure out the capabilities of the VR (Vibration reduction) on my new lens. Got an odd effect on this image.

This was about the most color I found all afternoon.

Lots of beavers run along this creek, their paths were all over the place.

Back on the ridge that runs down the middle of the WMA. Can it get any grayer?

How about if I look North instead of South? Will I find color there?

It's been a very tough winter for the critters.

It was a very good, relaxing afternoon but I'm ready for spring. This winter was very long and harsh, and it is snowing again today. Hunting seasons are all closed, and it will be some time yet before the ice goes off the lakes (I don't ice fish, and it's not good enough around here for me to invest in the equipment for it anyway).

Sometimes you just have to wander off into another room to keep your sanity. My room today was going to be the back yard. It's nothing compared to what I've seen here but it was a nice break that gave me a chance to practice starting a fire while everything was wet.

Here's the waterfall on our property, which really doesn't flow over the top unless we have a big rain.

We have 2 branches on the property which converge and make a small creek. This picture is taken looking in a NE direction up the creek.

Oh snap. I had fire briefly, and had to restart it after it went out. I thought I was taking video but apparently technology got the better of me today.

This is going to be me and my oldest daughter's (4) new camping spot. It is a nook in the SE corner of the property and has a branch right behind it.

I cheated with my cooking set-up. This is how I cook when on the trail. Everything packs up inside the pot, and the carrying bag can be used to gather water, which came in handy today.

These things actually tasted good this afternoon.

That's a neat looking bag you have, what is it?

Great place, too. Wish I was back on the farm again, I miss being able to do a hike like that by just walking out the door.

All right, great pics man! Big basin is looking real nice right now. I love the newt shot, those guys are hard to photograph.

Only one complaint. Where's all the pics of you two? You gotta prove that you were there, and you got her to show up.:p

Haha, she doesn't want pics of her floating around on the net. You guys will meet her soon enough anyway :)
