Last week was very, very busy for me, and finally yesterday afternoon I had the opportunity to slip out for a few hours in the woods. This time of year is one of my least favorite seasons simply because everything is gray. Gray sky, gray snow, gray trees, gray half-rotted grass (if it's showing), gray ice on the lakes, gray every d*mn thing the eye can see.
It was still good to get out for a while though, and I was able to try my hand at a bit of carving and cordage making. I didn't get pictures of either of those, but I will post up the spoon as soon as it's more or less done. Used my Wetterlings 19", Mora #1 carbon, and my RC-3 throughout the afternoon. On to the scenery.
The location was a WMA northwest of Lincoln NE. It's a neat little spot. Usually pretty empty for most of the year, but during deer season it is very crowded. I did see plenty of signs of other people, which surprised me a bit. Never saw anybody else while I was out, though.
Followed a creek for a while. It starts at a fairly large spring, which I didn't bother to photograph today. There's a small, shallow pool just below the spring that reeks something terrible. There are almost always deer around the spring, although I didn't see any today. Probably scared them all off with my wild chopping with the Wetterlings.
Still trying to figure out the capabilities of the VR (Vibration reduction) on my new lens. Got an odd effect on this image.
This was about the most color I found all afternoon.
Lots of beavers run along this creek, their paths were all over the place.
Back on the ridge that runs down the middle of the WMA. Can it get any grayer?
How about if I look North instead of South? Will I find color there?
It's been a very tough winter for the critters.
It was a very good, relaxing afternoon but I'm ready for spring. This winter was very long and harsh, and it is snowing again today. Hunting seasons are all closed, and it will be some time yet before the ice goes off the lakes (I don't ice fish, and it's not good enough around here for me to invest in the equipment for it anyway).
